  • no sound ?

  • They had to have giant drums as big as a house just to dry the film. Life wasn't always much simpler back then.

  • boy was he handsome!:D

  • he put the lemon on his mouth

then put his mouth on his hat

then he put the hat on his head.

then the lemon head ran off.

    WTF???

    genius of comedy?

perhaps thats where he got his zesty comedy

and remarkably sour acid trips that connected him with immortal frequencies

  • He is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Ahhh.

  • that's allot of his morning mail LOL

  • He was soo dang handsome!! Even when modern times, great dictator, limelight and monseur verdoux (i know i didn't spell the last one right there) he was still so incredibly handsome!!!

  • i wonder who is the youngest chaplin lover here???

  • Was he eating lemon because he was a vegetarian? If anyone knows, please let me know!

  • @TGingerBread I think he was just playing it for the camera at the time lol

  • @petertorksgal37 Anyways he was actually a vegetarian :)

  • @petertorksgal37 Anyways he was actually a vegetarian :) We eat lemons to absorbe vegatal proteins :)

  • @TGingerBread I don't know how he could eat lemons ewww LOL

  • @petertorksgal37 I do eat lemons....and I have the same facial expression :D

  • @TGingerBread LOL I have read the Charlie dabble in it but it didn't last that long lol. I've tried myself but always end up eating meat LOL

  • @petertorksgal37 i meant dabbled lol

  • @petertorksgal37 Seriously?I thought he made it until the end of his days!

  • charlie chaplin was so incredibly handsome!

  • Please answer me this!

Did Chaplin make a film without the role of Charlot? I mean, like he looks like here... without mustache, walking stick and hat.

  • @Yavanna92

Yes, the last film in which he played The Tramp (Charlot) was "Modern Times" (made in 1936; he made films until 1967). With the exception of a few of his 1914 Keystone shorts, he consistently plays The Tramp (sometimes with variations, like in his short, "The Cure,") until 1936. In "The Great Dictator", one of the characters he plays is very similar to The Tramp, however he is known as "A Jewish Barber," and he actually speaks dialogue.

  • @Yavanna92 You mean when he was a very young man???Because eventually he has done many movies without the role of Charlot :)

  • I am absolutely in love with Charlie Chaplin!!

  • i live 8 blocks from delongpree and labrea

  • Is this probably the first "Making of" ever mede?

  • Is it me or Charlie was perfect? He was kind, funny, handsome, talented, intelligent, sympathic, honest and brave.

  • He so freaking fucking HANDSOME!!!!

  • My favorite bit is him eating the lemon, he's just being himself and looking at us. I always get a feeling of closeness when I watch it, I forget that the footage is really that old.

  • what a great video !! I really enjoyed to see Charlie after playing the Tramp =D He was really charming <3

Where did you get this movie ?

  • Haha, his giggle was adorable!!! ^ , ^

  • @myTWOlittleMEMORIES I wonder what his laughter sounded like? LOL!

BTW, happy 122nd birthday Mr. Chaplin!

  • @caitlinjane92 Hahaha, well, he has made a couple of films where his voice is heard. (in case you didn't know...) ^_^

  • Chaplin's simple body language and film presence were incredible - even when out of character. They really come through on the big screen - TV and computer monitors only give a hint of his magic.

  • Charlie is so funny and vivacious!

  • HOT

  • Makes me green with envy to see that whole complex built especially for his work... he's obviously beyond worthy, but wow! What a feeling that must have been, having lived the life he lead, seeing that studio being built, to have it all at his finger tips. Dreamy. :)

  • @MangoZapp And you probably know that eventually the studio was purchased to become the A&M Records studio, at least for a while...

  • I love Charlie - i really do - he was a such great and humor man! Thank you so much for upload this!

  • Wow I am so proud of my parents naming me after that icon! ...But hey did you notice that Zach Braff (Scrubs) looks a little like Charlie? LOL ...

  • I wish I could have met Charlie, not while he was being the Tramp but while he was just himself. He's so cute I would have hugged him and never let go. *blush* LOL!

  • lol! my computer froze the video as Charlie was puckering at the lemon. His love of fruit reiminds me of Charlie Crews. Thank you for putting these up! Very interesting. DANG he's adorable. :D

  • This is wonderful.Thank you for posting.

  • Thank you SO much for posting this...

I really am grateful. I admire him and his films, and have been searching for this one in particular.

If you don't mind my asking, how did you get this?

I've read that this was never shown to the public.

  • GENIUS! :)

  • Did he already have eyeliner on at the beginning? Or did he have natural shading around his eyes like that?

  • Thanks for uploading this! It's an honour to have the opportunity to witness such precious moments of a genius mind at work! To imagine that he would even take care of the actresses make-up. Such pation cannot be found in these days! Chaplin was one of the few true humans beings that ever lived...Thank you for bringing joy to our lives Sir. Charles Chaplin!

  • Interesting to view this video when there was only wildlife and bush.

  • smart man..... moved to the far right chair!

  • AWWWW. I love how small he was! And when he was doing the hair and everything.... GAH! He was just too freaking cute! Too bad he's 106 years older than me. Haha.

  • Freaking hot!!!

  • this is rare!

  • Charlie was so freaking adorable XD

  • Loooove it! all these guys from the 1910s and 1920s were so great and cute! haha, the hats and the costumes...they need to comeback!

  • Fascinating.

  • I'm inlove! :U He is so handsome! Hahaha

  • lool why was he eating a lemon?

  • lool apparently he's reallly difficult to work with, he apparently is very short tempered, works his staff like crazy and is notorious for underpaying his staff. loool, hard times, still gotta love him to, he's a genious.

  • The steps he walks up and the doorway he enters can still be seen on Google Earth, virtually unchanged except for a metal cage with barred doors, brutally butted up against the old building. Not a lot of reverence for the past here.

  • Sure wish those style of clothes come back.

  • @mark86442

    Hear hear!

  • I love how the little fellow at 8:20 is so concerned about his hat rather than his neck!

And then when he sits as far away from them as possible, he's all, "I ain't sittin' there! You want my head!"

  • I loved this movie about how to make movies!:)

    I adore mr. Chaplin!

  • @aleksdirector I didn't see any pigs in the film.

  • I love the lemon bit ;-P

  • i like it

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!! it was just awsome! I love seeing chaplin out of his tramp character. thanks again, made my day!!

  • @brettfoshager: Yes, it's "JUST a silent movie". Maybe someday you'll forgive Charlie Chaplin for making "the wrong YouTube video" back in 1918.....

  • @Nordenwald I think what he means is at that some point, Charlie had narrated "How to make movies". I believe he was looking for the narrated version.

  • @Nordenwald Fuck whoever this guy is. For one, he cant afford a decent camera or even a microphone. People like this have no place on the internet. What a loser.

  • @analyzingfunny YOU DUMBASS! This was made in the 1910's!OMG do even have any Idea who Charlie Chaplin is? Cause if you did,you wouldn't be saying this is a video but a movie made in 1918!

  • @analyzingfunny How dare you, you dumb fuck. This is a SILENT MOVIE. It was not possible for there to be any sound other than the music recorded to it in the 1910's. And for this one Chaplin obviously chose not to use music because it was not like his other movies and would not fit. I think there may be a narrated version though. Your ignorance sickens me. Go learn a little history, loser.

  • @brettfoshager Dear, it seems nothing can teach you how to make movies ...

  • aaaaaa!!! chaplin is very handsome, I guess that I fall in love, even I love his costume!!

  • opino lo mismo! no encontraba a nadie que comparta esa opinion u.u

  • HE'S SO CUTE! i wish i could live when he did <3

  • OMG! he even made me to feel the taste of lemon:)

  • hahah! I really like the fact that Charlie did the girls make up :D

  • Treat them kindly.

  • he was such a gorgeous man, inside and out. he put so much love into everything he did. you don't find people like this in hollywood anymore......or anywhere else that i can think of, for that matter!!!

  • True genius. Really hard-working Funny guy. Bless his soul

  • he looks so wierd without the little moustache! lol

  • o.O

    How cute is he please?

  • OMG, what a cute little guy. I want to take him home. Sigh, too bad he probably felt that way about every other girl who was too young for him..

  • At 4.22 he's like, Want some?. The camera man was probably like, no that's ok Charlie, I'll pass on the lemon.

  • A Lemon, LOL. What a fantastic guy.

  • i live across the street from one of the homes designed by chaplin...it is now an apt building...the rest of the neighborhood is ugly...its beauty still stands out...the man was a true genius

  • lol at him eating her hair like spaghetti

  • where is there no sound?

  • everywhere.

  • are you serious?

  • @mrshughjackmancause you touch yourself at night. shut the hell up...this is a charlie chaplin movie...u expect sound?

  • I love how he blanches when he's reading the letter. This video is fabulous!

  • WOW!!!WHAT A TREAT!!!Charley as he regularly was, just screwing around with the camera. I feel like im just hanging around with him.I like that theres no sound, i can just imagine the sound in my head.

  • Where can I get this video?!

  • @Nordenwald

I know that, thank you, i meant why is there no music and they realized there isn't any in the rest of it anyway...never mind!

  • Chaplin Studio was so beautiful before!

It must'a been really nice living around there. But now it isn't the same.. sadly. It's very stupid to build big houses and stuff around famous landmarks. Just like "Music Box Steps" in Los Angeles. Where Laruel and Hardy made their movie "Music Box" or something in 1932. When they are going up that stair with a piano. Totally changed. Not good! >:/

  • God Los Angeles back then must have been great to live in.

  • Yes, it's was beautyful.

  • why is there no sound in the beginning???

  • @smoofy5: well, if you listen closely, you'll notice there's no sound in the rest of the video either. This movie was made in 1918, which was way before the sound era.

  • That was why I fell into love with Charlie Chaplin years ago.

  • LOVED this one!...Thanks SO much for posting it!

  • Being a huge fan of this guy, I really injoy this "ducumentary"...SO cool of you to poste it!

  • Hahahah, I love his crazy look at 4:21 :D

    WANNA HAVE!? :D

  • if I had a time machine I'd go back in time just to kiss him and say "you're very sexy and good looking behind that mustache" but of course he'd look at me like I was crazy. Lolz?

  • oh me too, he's adorable :'D

  • I'd love to go back in a time machine, when everything was in black and white

  • my dear he was sexy even with the moustache!

  • If I had a time machine, I would hang around Chaplin Studios. It looks so pretty! Plus, Charlie was hanging around, being adorable.

  • Ah! Don't start with the time machine! There are so many people I need to visit!!! :-D

  • yeah, the Studio looks so pretty :D

Is Chaplin's Studio there today, or has people destroyed it and taked it away for to build other big buildings, modern buildings? :oo hope not :((

  • I'm pretty sure it's been downsized and Jim Henson company is there. At the front gate there's a statue of Kermit in tramp costume. You can see it on google virtual earth, street view.

His little houses look basically the same.

  • Oh yeah, I searched Chaplin's Studio on google, and I'v got a picture of Kermit in the tramp costume. funny xD

wow, these people who owned Chaplin's Studio now.. I WOULD HAVE GONE CRAZY IF I COULD ACTUALLY WALK WHERE CHAPLIN WALKED! :DD

  • the studio is still there on labrea & leland way, though it might be a little smaller than it originally was, i lived on leland & highland years ago, the place looks just the same but it's behind a crowded shopping mall, i went to hollywood to do my laundry a few months ago, i live in downtown now, a quick subway ride to hollywood, that town is painted up, cleaned up, the kodak theater and all like places for tourist crowd, they don't rip down landmarks like they used to anyways.

  • *I went to hollywood to do my laundry* - ha ha ha ha!!!! doesn't get much classier than that! :-D Sorry but I'm in Europe and the concept of going to Hollywood to do the laundry is totally exotic to me :-)

  • muy interesante lo que cuentas! Gracias. Do you have pictures from the studio? I mean self made photos.

    Saludos,

    Marcelo

  • That was great!!!

  • that's really good video quality for 1918

  • hah! very good! Chaplin's hilarious! especially the part with the lemon!

  • Yes, the lemon part was funny :D

It's great to see Chaplin does "normal-things" too :))

    hahah :D

  • xD omg i know :)
