holy crap, out of everyguitar player on youtube ive never heard anyone with my exact sound! ughh that is so awesome! everybody when playing this kinda stuff is either to clean or distorted and man we do it the right way! very nice man!
dont sweat that buzz about playing the tune in e or f, if you dont have a horn section in your band, then go with the e chord, i do , and this song is close to the johnny river,s version of memphis, and many other s that are in "e". that vibro king kills, i play my upgraded fender esquire thru an old fender super reverb and retain that twang. well, keep spanking that plank,..like a big dog, adios
You have to play that in the key of " F ", not in " E ". The horn players always insist on the keys of " F, C or Bb" if you can't streatch, capo it...! I can play it in " F " and without a capo, and I have small hands, because I have learned to reach the D and the D# notes on the 4th string instead of the 5th, to avoid that streatch. Try it, it works good for me...!
Hi, this is Al who played this, thanks my guitar bud, Ron. Amp is a Vibro-King, guitar is a 96 Fender B-Bender Tele (bender is a nuisance on this tune, used only on the last chord)retro Fender vintage pickups installed, old Boss analog delay, Boss compressor. I learned Honky from Buddy Holly's garage tape version (he was tuned down a tone to D!), I tried it in F, the old rhythm guy didn't like those chords! Wish I could trem-pick the high part; yes, what I know of Hideaway, thanx all 4 kind words
I have this marked as one of my favorites. Disregard any negatives by others - I think you do a magnificent job on this song. I wish my 16 year old son would cut the metal and learn to play this for our county fair talent show!
The original by Doggett is in F. The Ventures played it in E (or the old master tape was running slow when it was pressed). Surf bands tend to play it in E. I guess it's a little easier on the pinky. Sounds good either way to me.
I have played along on this video and he is in the key of E. If he wasnt ,he couldnt use the open E and the open A in the intro,he would have to barre an F chord or tune higher.
I was reffering to the original key of F, not this video (which is excellent btw, just, not in the original key).
I tried to post a link, but, this dialogue apparently doesn't allow that, which, is where your confusion comes from.
Type Jimmy Smith Honky Tonk into the YouTube search bar, and, you will see what I mean. You see the guitar player at about 50 seconds, and, can clearly see he is playing in F.
Bill Doggett originally played this tune in the key of F in standard guitar tunning.
nothing better than a tele spanked thru a fender tube amp. I think that this version of honky tonk is what i will be playing on my esquire/super reverb combo. Thanks for the posting.
you should REALLY consider posting a teaching video of this song because it sounds so great how you play it, ive been trying to teach myself off of this video but i just cant get the hang of it.
You are the Man!! I wish I could play like that. I love this song as a child. I said that one I will play it. And I did learn to play Honky Tonk but the Ventures version. I love the Bill Dogget style that you play with the Freddie King Hideaway incorporated . If you have some free time could you post a video with a slow version of Honky Tonk. Thanks! keep on rockin'
Great job! I like the fact that it was "live" and you nailed it. Great guitar playing!!

Bill Doggett does it in F
this version is in E
I cant change it ... it happened
check out ...kojihisai version he does it in F
Thanks to all who enjoy it ... one of my favorites
rknrne 2 years ago
are you sure the original isn't just tuned a whole step higher? Just asking
Pickher 2 years ago
No, absolutely guarantee it is played in F standard guitar tuning.
First note of the boogie shuffle is the fretted F note, first fret of the sixth string.
Scruggsnut 2 years ago
Check here, you can quite clearly see the guitar player playing out of F at about 1.30 seconds. You can see clearly that the 5 chord is C, and, not B
Scruggsnut 2 years ago
@ 1:30 - 1:32 if you look a little harder you will see that the thumb lifts off to expose the E note..
Scruggsnut you watching toooooo hard....
close your eyes and open your ears...
It IS in E
