Video chat will soon give way to video telephony, which will become the industry standard for telecom. Vidchat is great, but it's so much simpler when it's integrated with the phone. Soon most carriers will be able to make bonafide video calls via their 4G networks, and the picture quality won't suck like it does on facetime. Of course, Apple will have to go to the back of the line because their iphone only runs on AT&T's crappy 3G network. Boy, did they ever bet on the wrong horse.

I noticed my iPhone 4 has zero bars ALOT. Well not zero, but one or zero. However I noticed that if I call someone it works fine and my data is pretty good speed. Weird, eh? Maybe its just AT&T cocking about, or maybe its a government conspiracy.

I think why it's not on 3G yet is that Apple wants to work out with the operators whether it should cost "Data money" for all transferred data, or if the operators should charge at a separate "Facetime" rate, when on 3G. If it costs from the regular Data rate it could potentially get out of hand at certain rates.

@marcusrehn We have had real video chat over 3G for i think 6 years now in europe. I does however not work as well as it does over wifi on the iPhone 4, but then again if you are going to do it over wifi you can use a damn computer. Nobody uses the video call funktion over here though, except for def people, they actually saved the operator who was first withit in sweden called "3". I don't think that everyone will care enough to use it every day, but it's fun to play with sometimes.

Since LTE 4G will be available later this year, I think thats why Steve meant that Facetime wasn't going to be available on cellular wireless data until next year.

For those Verizon-iPhone people, I think that Apple should star distributing the phone by themselves so that people can just activate the phone on any carrier, but I guess there's more to this "AT&T exclusive carrier for the iPhone in he U.S"

I think FaceTime could be big and it could be the future. Every device is going to support this eventually and over cellular networks. I am thinking of getting a MiFi so that I can FaceTime anywhere.
