  • Fake left hand right?

  • I used to think Steve Martin was hilarious. Then I grew up. Seriously. The movie with the huge nose? Cheaper by the dozen? The motherfucking Pink Panther?

  • Obviously there is a midget that lives inside of a Steve Martin robot.

  • I think there was someone in his pants

  • one of the best comedy skits I have seen in a long time.

  • Left hand is fake

  • He's brilliant. And he's so fuckin' funny . He's the best there ever was.

  • Genius comedy.

  • @JM13121 comic genius , not a word spoken...LMAO.........

  • this post was #4 science post according to twitter user RT's emergent-hive do com

  • this post was #4 science post according to twitter user RT's

  • Maxwell Smart has a shoe-phone. Steve Martin has a fly-phone.

  • Always loved watching Carson get cracked up.

  • Adorable. lol I love Steve Martin!

  • This video is from one of Carson's last shows in 1992. Steve Martin would only do the routine at private gatherings and was asked by Carson personally to come on the show and perform it. It is the only recording of it.

  • @PeterMennie Not true. Martin performs it as part of a magic special "Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women" with Ricky Jay. There's also a performance of it on British television that can be seen on YT.

  • @qdHazen May be so. I sit corrected.

  • This is my dads acc and he hasn't been on in years yet this has 500k views. One word: FAIL

  • Funny how Weird Al and Steve Martin started out with really CORNY (& whitey, Honkyish, Nerdy....LOL) routines. But they just kept getting better with age and left many in the dust.! Now they are masters in their craft and can't be touched.... ( :

  • @surfitlive deep

  • This is one of those things where you wonder how he did it.

It is also, however, one of those things where you don't want to know.

  • @DarkComputerGirl so so deep

  • @DarkComputerGirl Are you serious? You really don't see how he did this? I thought it was more than obvious. His left arm and hand are fake, just dangling there. His real arm and hand run down his side and into his pants, where he use it to pass all the stuff to his other hand, through his fly. I don't think it was supposed to be a real "trick". You were supposed to understand how he was doing it. That mocking of magicians is part of what makes it so funny! I guess that went over your head.

  • this is the funniest thing ever, great comedy

  • brilliant and funny this old school routine is far more clever & witty than most of the stuff being passed off as comedy these days. Give five Flydinis over Carrot top anyday.

  • Steve Martin's Comedy springs from depths that make no apology. To quote George Santayana. "The young man who has not laughed is a savage, the old man who will not laugh is a fool... " Martin studied philosophy 1964 to 1967 In Cal State. In 89 he received from California State University, the first honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Thank you for posting this...!

  • That chick was hot!

  • I'm old enoughg to REMEMBER seeing it!

  • Steve Martin is the greatest! I just wish he would come teach banjo at the Kaufmann Kamp in Tennessee, it would be my dream come true!

  • Yeah Dude,...Just chill....be still....walk up a hill....buy a surf board.....Go to the finals at Half Moon Bay, CA......

  • I Love Steve Martin. His comedy was always fresh and funny. :)

  • This was on late-night show TV. Not because you had to be mature because of any sexuality, but because if you were an immature snot-nosed little pissant kid, you'd think you were smart if you could "figure it out."

The mystery is not in "how he did it," but in why people can't appreciate the originality and creativity for what it really is.

The answer to that mystery, is because the kiddies have no experience with personal creativity or originality themselves.

    Youtube doesn't seem to help.

  • Steve Martin is a pisser!

  • the left arm is fake and his original left hand is inside providing the items ! but it is fun to watch

  • @chikapuli

    Duh

  • look i dont want you to comment badly on my dads vido hes a nerd so let him upload stupid stuff =]

  • it's not really easy to figure out. That's what makes it work for me. There are so many snobs commenting below. Let people guesse. Remember that there are some young people who are seeing this for the first time. How lucky for them!

  • It is done by Magic... Actually Steve has 5 arms and 6 hands and has the other 3 arms hidden inside his pants , along with a blonde assistant , and a complete set of Bone China & a micro amplified screw latch device for back-up... just for them people -

  • from the comments here, the x generation is truely a complete and totally dense group of morons. quit trying to explain it to them people, let them go back to their gameboys and xboxes

  • @xravisn - blaming an entire generation for having a lack of respect seems a bit odd. Especially when the anonymous people you are referring to are exactly that - "anonymous". They could be from ANY generation. Just enjoy the show.

  • Hmm...scary.

  • No duh dipshit its not like hes trying to hide it

thats the point off the whole act

  • I may have to remove the video just to thwart the commenters who can't get past "figuring it out" (as if any half-wit can't do the same)

  • Dude, just ignore the comments, this video needs to be seen.

  • FIGURING OUT HOW IT'S DONE ISN'T THE POINT !! This is a hilarious stand up comedy routine by a master comedian, When was the last time you laughed so much by a performer who doesn't say a word ..... Think about that !!

  • @5fingerstyle still. took me almost an entire minute to realize he only had 1 arm out of his suit jacket ;)

  • @5fingerstyle UH MR. BEAN THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

  • Classic... Only Steve Martin could get 6 1/2 minutes of laughs by just pulling stuff out of his fly.

  • It is a true fact that Steve's fly does not share the same agent with Steve. They both have seperate agents.

  • Duh!

  • um....left hand.

  • OMG! I feel like a complete idiot!!

  • haha its ok

  • No kidding.. he's not trying to fool you.. he is trying to make you laugh silly!

  • I love this skit. From what I've read, this was a routine that Steve Martin had only done for close friends. He did it for Johnny, though, in his last week as Tonight Show host.

Carson was the one and only, forever the King of Late Night. I really pity folks too young to remember him. He was so brilliant, so fantastic. Jay Leno and Letterman are just a shadow of his amazing talent.

  • Amazing!

  • great video thank u to sent me that

  • Steve Martin.

One of the Gods of comedy.

I lost it the first time I saw this.

He has had me rolling on the ground, clutching my guts.

    Thank you!

  • 1992 on one of his last shows

  • God, I totally miss Johnny carson and the original tonight show. Steve martin's awesome.

    thanks for posting this.

  • His face reminds me of Stan Laurel.

  • Oh Man! My head hurts so much from laughing so freaking hard! That was a real treasure -- quality television and at its best. I agree -- miss Johnny and The REAL Tonight Show. Thanks for putting up this video.

  • Still laughing! Miss the Johnny guy.

  • I know that most everybody already knows this, but the idea of this sketch is not how the magic's done, but the unique twist he's given to the act and to us.

  • Steve Martin never fails to be able to entertain us in this old school fashion. This is pure comedy at its best. Thank you, Steve

  • One of Steve Martin's shining moments. A gem.

  • classic.

  • i know how this was done, and im not gonna reveal it, but ive gotta say, even if you do know how it was done, its still a marvel that he pulled it all off.

  • Little person? Are you kidding? It's obvious that Steve's left hand is fake. His real left hand is inside his jacket and down his pants.

  • you and kronk are quite a pair.

  • I heard years ago that a "little person" is in the pants with Steve (in the back) helping him to do all those crazy things.

  • hilarious

    lolllllllllllllllll

  • of course it was before Carson retired! thanks for posting.... had not seen this one b4

  • I think this was shortly before Carson retired. Was that '93?

  • yer great. is his left arm (right to tha camera) fake?

  • just a theory; consider the other explanation

  • yeah i think you're right... it bounces off his body weirdly.

    still... freakin hilarious

  • hysterical!

  • hi. fergdoug294 has no manners

  • nor do my kids

  • one of the funniest "carsons"....

  • great post! thank you

  • he has a fake left arm thats how he does it.

    briliant and funny .

  • duh, really?

  • Love it!

    Comedy gold!

He is a great 'straight man' being crazy at the same time.

    Thanks for the post.

  • That is just wrong.

  • Back in the 70's there was nobody funnier that Martin. Pretty talented musician as well. Good stuff.

  • talented hoofer, too! a quadruple threat. Remember a bit from the Tracy Ullman Show when he was teaching auditioners a dorky combination so his girlfriend would get the job? Wonder if anyones posted that on You Tube.

  • his left hnd is fake

  • gee, no kidding

  • This is a great video in honor of Pavarotti's passing. He would have laughed at seeing this.

  • The 'FLYDINI' bit has long been a favorite of mine. Glad to see the full Carson version is here. I'd forgotten all about the Pavarotti puppet bit. Weird. Wonderful bit. Yup, prime 'out on the edge' Martin stuff.

  • This is SO creative! I wonder if Steve watches this, then looks at his movie posters of some of his latest "comedies" and wonders.....what happened to me?

  • I'd heard about "Flydini" for years but had never actually seen the act. That has to be one of the funniest things Steve Martin has ever done. Why isn't he that funny anymore??

  • watched this last night on the DVD box set. laughed my ass off. this is pure genius

  • just for the dudes information it was dun in 92 yes it was carsons farwell haha i know this and i was 5 at the time

  • My brother told me that when the little puppet came out, my dad literally fell out of his chair and was laughing on his hands and knees. I think I read that Pope John Paul II was scandalized by it when it aired on Italian television.

  • I believe that the humour has degraded so very much in the last 20 years; some of the current comedians such as Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock are allright but I don't think they quite compare.

  • You got that right jbbrochard. For instance the celebrity roast with Dean Martin was hillarious and clean. Today's roast is vulgar...c*nt, p*ssy, c*ck, f*ck... you name it, and that's not even funny. No brain behind that type of humor.

  • super

  • I miss Carson.

  • maybe his...O_O...nvm..

  • I remeber this when it aired and recorded it but have since lost the tape. Thanks for posting the vid!

  • Steve Martin is a freakin' genius.

  • I believe this is taken from the last week Johnny Carson hosted the Tonight Show. Steve Martin never did this routine in public before this appearance and he did it as a favor to Johnny during his farewell.

  • That's what I've heard too. Martin used to do this routine at the legendary regular poker games with Carson, Neil Simon, Chevy Chase (ugh) et. al. and this was the first and maybe only time that he ever did it in public for Johnny's farewell.
