  • @kevinstampe i don't think you understand jazz then. what a pity :(

  • @TheNamesNina Yes, i love jazz. But seriously, scat is a medical term for feces.

  • @kevinstampe That's true -- pretty funny term, eh?

  • @SuzDoyleMusic Indeed.

  • Very helpful, thank you so much!

  • this is the kind of thing that makes me wish i could play piano =(

  • @ilikeblood33 It's never too late to learn! :-)

  • @ilikeblood33 this is the kind of thing that can help you *learn* to play piano :-)

  • @1avocado Yeah!

  • you have just launched my obssessional mind into a new world

  • @oflynnmusic Yay! :-) Enjoy!

  • Root, minor 3rd, perfect 4, flat 5, perfect 5, and dominant 7. Not flat 3, sharp 4, or flat 7. These are the proper names for the intervals.

I'm a piano teacher myself. Also, I consider scatting to be different than how you described. It uses other vocal sounds than just "shoo be doo" to create color and depth.

  • @buddyrx7 Thanks for your comments. I agree that the proper names you gave are accurate. At the same time, my video is geared towards beginners, so I focused on how a note was changed from notes of a regular C scale or C chord; therefore, b3 refers to the 3 being lowered. I think it's a more user friendly way for beginners to begin understanding music theory in a practical way.

  • @SuzDoyleMusic And, yep, official "scat singing" has an infinite array of possible sounds; and again, this beginner video is for those just getting started and doesn't claim to be a complete approach to the subject. Just a starting point. :-)

  • minor 3, 4, flat 5, domant 7. Not flat 3, sharp 4, or flat 7.

  • Y U NO HAV NO SHOES!?

    1:35

  • @gonc4lobo Those are my son's feet -- he was holding the camera. Cute toes, eh? :-)

  • Thank you for the lesson. I've heard so many people scat, but never knew how. Now that we have a Scat Guy on American Idol, it's got me thinking about it more. Thanks, again, for showing how it's done!

  • Scatting is pretty fun and it sounds fun. I always wondered how it was done and the techniques behind it until I saw your video, it's great and interesting.

My favorite scatters are Phil Harris, Scatman Crothers, and Anita O'Day.

  • @dazzitboy Do you mean Phil Harris the actor? I'll have to check that out. Scatman Crothers is amazing! I'll have to give Anita O'Day a listen, too. You might enjoy the Scatman (he has videos on you) and also, "Jazz Improvisation" by Thomas Quasthoff, which is an amazing a capella jazz scat. Enjoy!

  • Wow, effective video, thanks! It has enlightened me!!

  • than u. nice class

  • You're a good teacher

  • Thank you so much!!! This helped a lot!

  • u cant learn to scat its an internal thing

  • yes, all the greatest scat singers of all time never learnt. they were just born saying skoobedy bappity doo...

  • LOL!

  • Scat is improvisation,

improvisation is an expression of musical freedom,

true freedom never comes just through learning from somebody else it's an internal thing like badgirl94 suggests,

but through imitation(learning) we learn the style.

Learning exclusivly the style is dangerous because it limits the imagination of an individual.

Sure, somebody should help young musicians but it cannot substitude a creative proccess which goes beyond any style.

Read M.Davis and B.Evance on that:)

  • And yet I have to do just that for a concert next week. Yay...

  • kinda agree:)

  • Very helpful!!

  • loved it :)

  • Excellent Musical grasp and teaching.

  • Excellent, thanks a lot.

  • skat de boodly didly daldy room skata boom deady boom boom

    try say that farst

  • Scat-Da-Biddly-Dat-Do-Bat

  • I think he's saying that it's wrong to use. Not your introduction to it; note the "the" part of his comment. (not that I agree with it)

  • add a major 3rd and 6th as well. Blending mixolydian and the blues scale'll get you a sound that fits a dominant 7 chord better.

  • Awesomesauce is what we call this video :D

  • Thanks! I think I have to write a song called "Awesomesauce" now. What a fun word!

    Suz

  • Thanks a lot!!! i feel better now

  • This is so cool. Great to see singing and piano combined. So often they are treated separately.

  • Excellent! You are a great teacher. Thanks!

  • You betcha! :-)

  • While aimed at early learners, there are all the hallmarks of a very professional teacher. Clear and articulate. Michael
