too cute! Im no expert but do have a lot of Lorikeet friends and I can usually tell males from females. The males I know have a more pronounced forehead and it's slightly more bulbous than on a female. it's not scientific but seems to work for me. It's especially noticeable when they come in a group and you can see the birds that are "in pairs". fantastic birds!
Not correct, I breed these birds, the colour of the beak is from age and not sex - sorry. the pelvis is the only true way to tell the sex and even this is not infallible. The birds sexual behaviour will generally tell you what sex it is :)
I have a green nape lory named Nikki and I have the feeling she is a he! She is 2yrs. old and is humping everything! I have had her for a year now and she has brought a lot of happiness to my life! I adore my lory!
I personally would not let a bird feed from my mouth, only because you run the risk of being bitten! I dont know how long it takes them to start talking, The more they hear something, the more chance you have of them copying it, for example when I call my dog. So just stick to one sentence, and repeat it. Eric does not like to return to his enclosure, only when he has fresh flowers to eat. Like all other animals, they can be moody, so pick your time to try new things. Hope that helps.
We have a special lady/guy named Angel. Is it dangerous to feed the bird from my mouth? She loves it and we don't argue with her! We are constantly talking to her, when does she start talking? How does one get her to be more friendly - She hates changes, hates being caught, and screeches like a demon when we want to touch her, though and comes to you for attention all the time, exept when it's bedtime! Your assistance and help shall be appreciated!
lol i had one of these birds they were honestly the best pet i have ever had ( and trust me i have had a few) they have the most amazing personality but unfortuantley it got out of its cage and a dog got it. Couldnt stop crying 4 weeks
I ended up calling him Ashling (Ash for short) he's so clever. he's about 16 weeks now and I've taught him to shake hands, wave, come, snuggle and jump onto my hand- we're working on "go potty" and I'll soon teach him to talk, roll over and spin... we've got some good times ahead! Your lorikeet is so adorable when he rolls and get excited. we nick named ours kitten for the same reason. man, theyr the best pets!!!
I just got a ball for my 12 week old today. He chose it at the supermarket (no one told me off for having him there!) i have two lorikeet soft toys in his cage and a maccas toy- all safe :) im so overprotective. hes the best little pet ever! anyone have suggestions for a name? things like edgar, beetle, ronnie.... XD
how about "Wazoo" or "Oiseau"? (oiseau = bird in french, wazoo is a mis-pronunciation) or perry, short for perruche? (bird, can't remember which language.) Cute little thing though, looks like you will have many years of fun with this little darling.
They are expensive plus they are a high maintenance Parrot: they do NOT eat seed but have to be fed a special NECTAR diet! They are extremely high energy and active and require a BIG cage and lots of SUPERVISED time outside of their cage! They are also extra messy as they squirt their LIQUID poop out of the cage in any direction and throw the nectar all around (dries like cement on the walls!)... Check out some of the videos of Rainbow Lories in their native habitat in Australia!
holy crap! my scaley breasted lorikeet has the exact same ball and plays with it in the exact same way!! he loves to throw it around and 'kill' it! Eric is a cutie!
Eric what are you doing? We agreed this was my talent? Did that peice of pear we shared last week mean nothing to you?

Great video, they are just the best birds ever. And sultanas are a popular treat, especially when they have been soaked.
