Not sure what you mean. I don't think I've ever tuned to DGDDAD. I guess you could, but the G string would be very loose. I play Road in EADEBE with a Capo on the 2nd fret.

Maybe it's a hard to see, but for Road I use all five, one has to for the rhythm really. Sometimes I use only three, when the situation calls for it, as with my Etude.
