So you're saying if this was a white guy with seven kids it wouldn't have been racist?
Everytime a there is a minority displayed in a funny way the first thing people say is "RACIST!" Notice how nobodies complaining about the way the commercial displays the "white" boss as an asshole who doesn't care that our little indian hero has a family and tells him " not my problem." If anything this is more racist against white people then Indians.
I'm Indian. I didn't think it was a huge deal. But I did find the "Apu-like Indian guy with 7 kids" offensive. Indian-Americans rarely have so many kids that they have trouble taking care of them financially as this ad suggests.
I cringed at the the Panda one, but I didn't really find the first one racist. Mostly because half of my own co-workers are Indian, so hearing an Indian accent around the office is the most normal thing for me.

@MrBleachYW - I agree with you, these were racial sterotypical marketing characters. They weren't very good ads in my opinion but they were not racist.
FYI - The KFC ad was not racist either so trying to use it as an example of racism in the media does not make any sense.
You think these ads aren't serious because it is "tame" by contrast to some other commercials, but I say even tame racist ads are detrimental. You don't need to rabidly hate someone to be a racist. You simply need to label a group as "the other" (ie oh those funny little asians who talk funny). Think, if an asian-american ran for public office, how many voters would ASSUME the person probably "talks funny", isn't worth taking seriously, and therefore isn't as american as everybody else.
And you're right, the US is a "melting pot" (or more like a salad imo). I am an american, I feel like an american and my allegiance is to america. But it doesn't change the fact that when I go outside my home, there are those who think i'm like a "geisha" (bc asian females are supposed to be sexual and docile), or that I don't speak english, or when I talk about politics, my perspective is that of a chinese but rather than an american.
Asian-americans are used as pawns by those with an agenda. We are "minorities" when people need an example of the success of the american dream (and also when they need a way to discredit black americans when they claim racism is keeping them down). But we are counted as a part of the "majority" when it comes to school admission (we need MUCH higher scores just to be on an even playing field), employment and etc. And even with a good education, we face a glass ceiling in employment.
-some kind of honorary whites. Asians are stuck in a catch22. We do not get the privilege of being in the majority, but nor do we get the privilege afforded to minority groups. And as a result, there is a culture where anti-asian racism is re-labeled as satire/humor/harmless. If you are interested, i would like to provide you with links to blogs that better illustrate my point. There are writers much better than I who have news articles talking about current racism against asian-ams.
I'm not saying you're racist. I'm saying that you, along with the majority of the population, do not understand the nature of anti-asian racism because it is an entirely different beast than racism blacks face. Lots of different groups face discrimination, but the nature of the discrimination differ. Women face discrimination, but it won't be the same kind of discrimination an asian man faces. Society in general do not know the kind of discrimination asians face, and so ppl think asians are
Actually, if you were actually informed of the kind of racism asian-americans faced, you'd realize you've just committed an act that continuously antagonize asian-americans. Black americans have done a relatively good job of teaching society what they consider to be racist. Asian-Americans have not, because one of the biggest obstacle we face is the PERCEPTION that asians don't face racism. That is, the racism we face is often minimized because people don't think we face racism.
Why are you obsessed w/this thread, This meaningless video. who cares? 95% of the comments are by you. You are a scary creepy person. I'm repulsed.I'm gonna go puke.
There's a very long history of systematic racism against asians but none against whites. And because most whites have never experienced what it is like to be of "a lower category" in racial hierarchy, they have a hard time sympathizing with those who are adversely affected by "harmless" jokes related to race.
I don't know if you're caucasian but if you are, you'll know that when people poke fun at you, they're not demeaning the very essence of your identity. The rest of us don't have that kind of "white privilege". Whites, regardless of nationality, can move through life with the confident knowledge that people won't irrationally dislike them for their race. In WW2, Japanese-americans were forced into internment camps but German and Italian-Americans where not because asians were viewed more neg.
contin-explicit permission to heighten their preexisting animosity against Asian-Americans.
The misconception most people have is that Asian-Americans don't face discrimination, which is why borderline racist jokes about asians are accepted. However, the reality is that these jokes will always be viewed as offensive by Asian-Americans who have dealt with these sort of school-ground mockery their entire life. This sort of joke will not be accepted until the shadow of racism is completely gone.
EX: Here in America, we make fun of brits but we will cast them in our movies and TV shows as americans but we won't cast Asian-Americans who are ACTUALLY american. There are still cases where a person is violently attacked for being Asian, but there's no blatant record of British people getting attacked for being british. Not since the revolutionary war at least. Race jokes regarding Asians is always dangerous because while SOME people view it as harmless humor, others will view it as explicit
Race-related humor is difficult to do simply because there is a lot of negative legacy in race relations. If today, American's poked fun at the Brits, the Brits can simply laugh it off with the knowledge that they're not going to be penalized for being British in society. But Asians are penalized for being asian, in School enrollment, employment, and etc. If you're knowledgable of the history, you'll know that even today, Asian-Americans have to struggle for respect in many things.
Also, "americans" (as in white americans) don't generally face much discrimination. But Asians, american or not, DO face discrimination. If one day, Asian-Americans were f ully accepted as a part of American fabric of life, then poking fun at "asian accents" wouldn't be viewed as offensive. Here in America, we do fake British accents too. But generally, (white) brits aren't discriminated against so the poking fun of Brits are largely toothless.
What you're doing is a false comparison. Once upon a time, the Irish were discriminated against in America and so things that mocked the Irish were discriminatory rather than done in good humor. Today, the Irish are now as American as anyone else, and therefore fair game in comedy. Asians, however, have not been fully accepted in American society yet. Asian-Americans, even 4th generation ones, are still viewed as "perpetual foreigners". And so the fake Chinese accents are viewed as offensive
I disapprove of the commercial but the makers of the commercials sure are ingenious. They make wildly racist commercials but they are smart enough to target the minority groups that are too small to produce much repercussion. If they were dumb, they'd make racist commercials about blacks or jews but then they'd get the smack down. But since it's racist commercials about asians, they can get away with it because Asians are usually a tolerant lot.
It doesn't matter if he's turkish or japanese or something else. The fact that the creator isn't caucasian doesn't absolve him from bad behavior. And "minority" is a relative term. "chinese" is a minority in america but the majority in Asia. My point is, racism and the use of negative stereotype isn't correlated with race. A person can be asian and yet be racist against other asians too. Just like blacks can be racist against other people, in spite of being a target of racism themselves.
It's racist. But I'm not going to argue with the people in this clip because I'm SO not surprised that these guys don't find the commercials racist. Why not? They're not of the group that's being made fun of. For those of us who grew up as a minority in america, we do find it offensive.
The thing I found very funny: How many Indian people do you know have SEVEN kids? Like seriously? Most Indians I know are only childs or one of two kids. I've never honestly known someone Indian who has a lot of brothers and sisters. I'm sure there are that such people, but I've never known anyone. I've never even met anyone who talk in an Indian or Asian accent so exaggerated as the ones in this ad. Maybe I just don't notice these kinds of things.
never seen it...not racist. culturally welcoming. anything is racist now if you dont have white people in it. All these are made with a theme from like india. FUCKING FAGGS. NON offensive. unless their not making fun of white stereotypes its not offensive
this is retarded - is a cartoon of a bald eagle with a texan accent talking to a beaver with a canadian accent racist no - I wish they did charachters with Persian accents as long as they dont make them arab terrorist - which makes no sense anyway, but Im sure thats what theyd do anyway...
I have noticed that the people that complain most about racism tend to be from races that are usually known to have issues with poverty. And I do not recall any Indian or East Asian complaining about these commercials.
the only thing i could pick out that was even slightly offensive (and this is a long shot) is that the genie panda didn't have an accent. and that's not even really offensive.
There's not much real antisemitism left in the world. Most of it is some jewish rat bastard who wants an easy way to turn the focus on the other person. And those people I do hate. And I also hate the Jewish religion and think that all jews are smug. But that's because of the "Chosen people" bullshit...
I love how you dont think 7 kids stereotypes an indian, or the Panda one where if you subsituted Pandas for people its a subtle term for illegal imigrants getting deported (sent back to the zoo).
But
Australians giving West Indians KFC....welllllll.......
Wildly obvious racism. So what. I live in the most diverse neighborhood in the world (100 different countries represented) & almost everyday I hear racist comments coming from just about anybody. White American people are the least racist, genocidal people in the world. We've had one Civil War. In other counties people wipe out an entire culture, then have dinner & a smoke. I think theses ads lack creativity and are racist and stupid; so what. Israelis kill Palestinians everyday.
Being 'white' is just a correlation, not causation. And, you seem to be neglecting a lot of other history in the formation of the USA from a colony to today.
Perhaps you should look at the role of money and resources in war and genocide.
So by your argument, because there are racists in the world, we should not be bothered by racism in commercials? If people were all indolent and anti-progress, we'd still be illiterate and living in caves. Society of today isn't perfect, it is better than society of 50 years ago, which in turn was better than society 100 years ago. There's a reason for that.
Yes, by argument you are an asshole. Fuggin' dumbshit. Hasn't anyone been anywhere? Christ I miss the Cold War. No, fight you wars outside of commercial TV you friggin doink!
You're sad. You're like a rabid dog that just barks at people because you lack the intelligence to make a valid argument. Pathetic. Maybe you should spend more time in school and less time on youtube.
Ohh...I see. You're one of those anti-social freaks who thinks that SOMEHOW, you're the ONLY one who sees the world for what it really is. *rolls eyes* Self-anointed rebels are so passe. You're probably an old guy in the throes of midlife crisis.
Capslock much? And are you even of this world? If you don't want to look like the absolute moron you are, "do your homework" and "come back for another thrashing". That is, if I have the spare time to spend on you, you inconsequential nihilistic fool.
The Indian one was playing on stereotypes. The Chinese one wasn't as much.
Both are stupid...it seems silly to target races like that. What's their motive for doing that? Why not target white people as well? Perhaps their racist beliefs are what caused them to write/air these commercials.
"White people have no problems making sales, but Indian and Chinese people could use some help from our website!"
Iv'e heard a lot worse, and seen worse. Watch some Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle, then offend literally everyone but no one cares. All because it's on television it get's hyped up.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
everyone on this dumb show is an idiot. Oh this show is racist the white people have american accents and speak english!!! grrrrrr and they're middle class OOOOHHHH STEREOTYPES put that on your damn show
They don't give a shit. They are Hindu or Muslim & could care less about petty bullshit. I know a lot of people from India, Bangladesh & Pakistan. The Indians who have emigrated here & done their thing well are the least likely to freak out on this crap. I recommend some Bharati Mukherjee. What is there to speak up about? They'll thrive despite any "racism". Many other people spend alot of time on "reparations" & blaming others for their problems. There is no NAAIP & I bet they wouldn't want it.
The coup de grace to your comment is the fact that immigrants and foreigners don't often have the same perspective on racism as minorities who are american. They come from countries where their ppl is the majority and at the same time, they also lack the cultural understanding of america's history with race. You will find immigrants and first generation americans watching fox news while their children wouldn't do so even with a gun held to their head.
Your eloquence astounds me. Please, amaze me some more with your vast vault of vocabulary. I haven't heard such a powerful discourse since I was in kindergarten.
Both the asian and indian ones are unacceptable. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a person who hates the asian commercial but loves the indian one.
If this was about Black people, Jews or Mexicans, then of course it would be racist. Considering its Indians and Chinese, who never complain but put their heads down and work hard in this country and prop up the economy, they are dismissed. People take those two races for granted and don't realize the amount of sacrifice and hard work they put in.
it's perfectly fine to offend people, you just can't discriminate...all cultures are equally fun to laugh at; people should have more of a sense of humor about themselves
But it would be discrimination to tell an actor, in the case of commercials, that, in order to avoid possible accusations of racism, he or she can't be in an ad.
These two ads were animated and most likely voiced by poeple not either Indian or Chinese, but I am taking this video along side the KFC report, also by TYT and which covers the same topic.
@UberNoodleX - Unfortunately TYT mistakenly said the KFC Australia ad was racist when it was not racist at all, so it is not a good example to use as racism in the media.
Maybe so, but last I checked it's at least as offensive to Indians (and Catholics, poor people, and a host of other groups) to insinuate that they tend to have a lot of children as it was to Chinese when Stewie from Family Guy visited "Asiantown" and commented on the lack of women.
It's interesting how all of the TYT racism stories about Indians and Asians are either a) hand-gestures b) offhand celebrity remarks or c) something minor.... and are then dismissed. (While the real serious stories are IGNORED).
Meanwhile, most racism stories about this one other racial group are given significant coverage and attention.
The implicit message that this gives is that Indians and Asians don't receive serious racism and it's only other racial groups that do.
And that's why asians have a hard time getting validation when they say they're victims of racism...because society thinks asians are somehow the only people free from racist attacks.
I think the offensive part in the Indian guy based ad is about the 7 kids - calling on the stereotype of too many kids. Is the ad racist no - but is it offensive - it is just as offensive as playing on any particular demographics stereotypes for a laugh in a non-comedy stage setting (the stand-up gives a heads-up no offense signal to the audience - a pre-emptive strike of sorts).
I'll admit it: I think the characters in these commercials are cute. And while one could certainly put forward the case that the commercials are "benignly" racist (I know that's a terribly oxymoronic term, but I'm using it in opposition to malicious racism), the energy to do so is better spent in other ways.
I wouldn't be surprised if the same people who were offended still believed the stereotypes of black people portrayed by the media. it's not so nice when it's YOUR race, is it?
I kind of find Ling Ling and Ting Ting questionable 'cause those aren't Chinese names. Not so much offended but just noting it.
I suppose it's not so much that they are using racial stereotypes rather than Chinese/Indian people are so rarely seen in the media. When they are acknowledge people take notice because they aren't usually acknowledge? o.O; Just a hunch.
I mean what is the insult. The people WANT to succeed in the ads. That's not an issue.
I think maybe promoting the "dollar value" measure of success in the ending scene may be offensive. The second ad probably was better in the fact that the characters had more family time together because of the success.
The only think I found REALLY offensive was the fact that the boss was white in the first ad. It would have been better of both characters were SE Asian.
I believe that some chinese people probally would be offended by this guy saying Chinese. How do he even know that they are chinese maybe they are Korean that's why you have to be carefull with your selective choice of words. If you are not sure about correct origin then the term Asian would be right to use.I have good friend's of mine that are mexican but everyone they hang with are not of Mexican desent so I use the term Latino or Latin to refer to them. And Indians & Arabs are of Eastern decent
Mites7, have you heard the term 'West Asia'. The Museum of Asian Culture in Singapore doesn't use the term 'Middle Eastern'. That term is Eurocentric. The UN doesn't even use it anymore.
I find it interesting that the Indian man had 7 children~ which means I assume they are Catholic :)) and in the panda commercial the confused pandas both had oriental accents while the wise panda had an American accent.
As a brown man... I was not offended. I was amused. We know our accents sound funny... even we joke about them!
When my parents were watching, they got so excited an Indian was in the same program as the Super Bowl, we un-muted the TV, and felt like recording it! We can't wait for the day that an Indian-American will make it in the world of sports! (Not counting cricket!)
it's funny how u claim to be a staunch democrat, yet spew republican racist hate.
and that person was making a distinction between comedy and racism. That commerical is trying to be funny, while u have bad intentions (and that is racism)
and ur also a fucking idiot. Next time u r trying to racist, use the racial word correctly. Gook refers to the viets after white ppl couldn't beat their ass. NOT ASIANS.
Learn history and stop claiming to be a democrat when u clearly r not
I was trying to make a point and it was obviously well recived because Sunny deleted his comment without responding.......
So let me get this straight, its "FUNNY" when commercials are racist and perpetuate stereotypes but when Im clearly being racist and perpetuating stereotypes .....im not funny.
There is a real difference between comedy and having bad intentions. Comedy is comedy. It does not have cruel intentions (which you obviously have). There is a fine line, which the commerical did not cross, and that you did.
who said I don't profile people? I never claimed to be a democrat, which you have.
and I don't care who that person said, so why the fuck are u bringing that person up? lol I am saying what I am thinking, fucktard
Yes, I agree. I did cross that line.....to prove a point. Racism should not be tolerated and IS NOT "funny". These commercials wer not "funny" in my opinion.
"and I don't care who that person said, so why the fuck are u bringing that person up?"
The comment you were offended by ( but for some reason didnt find "funny") WAS IN RESPONSE TO WHAT "THAT PERSON" SAID YOU DUMB ASS! I was simply explaining what that person said so you would understend my comment in its full context.
and it's hilarious how a fucking whity white is lecturing us on racism. You don't know shit about it, so don't fucking tell us shit.
U are ignorent, and u show ur stupidity in ur comments. You can prove a point without being exactly what you are critizicing. How is calling someone a gook or nigger prove that racism is wrong? lol
Lol, youre fucking crazy. I suggest you seek some psychiatric help. And im not going to humor you any longer.
Its obvious that your trying to get me angry but its not working. All of your comments and the messages you sent me ( particularly saying that someone I know will die) actually made me laugh. Youre "FUNNY" just like that commercial!
Acoording to you and sunnyxlove racism is funny. Remember? Yes, I was racist in that comment but you should have found it funny just like that ad.
If you think about it what I said in that comment wasnt very different from what was said and INSINUATED in that Panda ad.
I didnt have bad intentions. I was only racist for the purpose of disproving the claim that racism is funny. My comment and your angry response proves that it is not. LOL, thank you for validating my argument !
OK really people need to stop digging too deep into everything and just relax

Why are you obsessed w/this thread, This meaningless video. who cares? 95% of the comments are by you. You are a scary creepy person. I'm repulsed.I'm gonna go puke.
eqsmooth 2 years ago
There's a very long history of systematic racism against asians but none against whites. And because most whites have never experienced what it is like to be of "a lower category" in racial hierarchy, they have a hard time sympathizing with those who are adversely affected by "harmless" jokes related to race.
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
I don't know if you're caucasian but if you are, you'll know that when people poke fun at you, they're not demeaning the very essence of your identity. The rest of us don't have that kind of "white privilege". Whites, regardless of nationality, can move through life with the confident knowledge that people won't irrationally dislike them for their race. In WW2, Japanese-americans were forced into internment camps but German and Italian-Americans where not because asians were viewed more neg.
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
contin-explicit permission to heighten their preexisting animosity against Asian-Americans.
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
EX: Here in America, we make fun of brits but we will cast them in our movies and TV shows as americans but we won't cast Asian-Americans who are ACTUALLY american. There are still cases where a person is violently attacked for being Asian, but there's no blatant record of British people getting attacked for being british. Not since the revolutionary war at least. Race jokes regarding Asians is always dangerous because while SOME people view it as harmless humor, others will view it as explicit
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
Race-related humor is difficult to do simply because there is a lot of negative legacy in race relations. If today, American's poked fun at the Brits, the Brits can simply laugh it off with the knowledge that they're not going to be penalized for being British in society. But Asians are penalized for being asian, in School enrollment, employment, and etc. If you're knowledgable of the history, you'll know that even today, Asian-Americans have to struggle for respect in many things.
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
Also, "americans" (as in white americans) don't generally face much discrimination. But Asians, american or not, DO face discrimination. If one day, Asian-Americans were f ully accepted as a part of American fabric of life, then poking fun at "asian accents" wouldn't be viewed as offensive. Here in America, we do fake British accents too. But generally, (white) brits aren't discriminated against so the poking fun of Brits are largely toothless.
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
What you're doing is a false comparison. Once upon a time, the Irish were discriminated against in America and so things that mocked the Irish were discriminatory rather than done in good humor. Today, the Irish are now as American as anyone else, and therefore fair game in comedy. Asians, however, have not been fully accepted in American society yet. Asian-Americans, even 4th generation ones, are still viewed as "perpetual foreigners". And so the fake Chinese accents are viewed as offensive
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
I disapprove of the commercial but the makers of the commercials sure are ingenious. They make wildly racist commercials but they are smart enough to target the minority groups that are too small to produce much repercussion. If they were dumb, they'd make racist commercials about blacks or jews but then they'd get the smack down. But since it's racist commercials about asians, they can get away with it because Asians are usually a tolerant lot.
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
It doesn't matter if he's turkish or japanese or something else. The fact that the creator isn't caucasian doesn't absolve him from bad behavior. And "minority" is a relative term. "chinese" is a minority in america but the majority in Asia. My point is, racism and the use of negative stereotype isn't correlated with race. A person can be asian and yet be racist against other asians too. Just like blacks can be racist against other people, in spite of being a target of racism themselves.
ElatedScherzo 2 years ago
It's racist. But I'm not going to argue with the people in this clip because I'm SO not surprised that these guys don't find the commercials racist. Why not? They're not of the group that's being made fun of. For those of us who grew up as a minority in america, we do find it offensive.

Cenk thought the Panda one was less insulting for this reason:
The Indian guy wasa cartoon guy.
The Pandas were cartoon animals.
With them both being cartoons it desensitizes it to a degree than if they attempted to do the commercials with live actors.
But with the Asian cartoon version being Pandas it desensitizes it even more so.
So Cenk is Turkish, JR is African American, Ana is Armenian, and Ben is Jewish... and no one knows the name of the white guy cause never talks.

Israelis kill Palestinians everyday.
eqsmooth 2 years ago
Being 'white' is just a correlation, not causation. And, you seem to be neglecting a lot of other history in the formation of the USA from a colony to today.
Perhaps you should look at the role of money and resources in war and genocide.
UberNoodleX 2 years ago
So by your argument, because there are racists in the world, we should not be bothered by racism in commercials? If people were all indolent and anti-progress, we'd still be illiterate and living in caves. Society of today isn't perfect, it is better than society of 50 years ago, which in turn was better than society 100 years ago. There's a reason for that.

The Indian one was playing on stereotypes. The Chinese one wasn't as much.

The coup de grace to your comment is the fact that immigrants and foreigners don't often have the same perspective on racism as minorities who are american. it's perfectly fine to offend people, you just can't discriminate...all cultures are equally fun to laugh at; people should have more of a sense of humor about themselves
puddum 2 years ago
But it would be discrimination to tell an actor, in the case of commercials, that, in order to avoid possible accusations of racism, he or she can't be in an ad.
These two ads were animated and most likely voiced by poeple not either Indian or Chinese, but I am taking this video along side the KFC report, also by TYT and which covers the same topic.

@UberNoodleX - Unfortunately TYT mistakenly said the KFC Australia ad was racist when it was not racist at all, so it is not a good example to use as racism in the media.

The implicit message that this gives is that Indians and Asians don't receive serious racism and it's only other racial groups that do.
whenindoubtdo 2 years ago 3
And that's why asians have a hard time getting validation when they say they're victims of racism...because society thinks asians are somehow the only people free from racist attacks.

Interesting... I think the ads were not meant to be racist per se, but that they perhaps had a negative stereotypical basis.
TheYou0Tuber 2 years ago
I think the offensive part in the Indian guy based ad is about the 7 kids - calling on the stereotype of too many kids. Is the ad racist no - but is it offensive - it is just as offensive as playing on any particular demographics stereotypes for a laugh in a non-comedy stage setting (the stand-up gives a heads-up no offense signal to the audience - a pre-emptive strike of sorts).
supercoolkid07 2 years ago
I'll admit it: I think the characters in these commercials are cute. Very good debate here.
It would have been better of both characters were SE Asian.

it's funny how u claim to be a staunch democrat, yet spew republican racist hate.
and that person was making a distinction between comedy and racism. That commerical is trying to be funny, while u have bad intentions (and that is racism)
and ur also a fucking idiot. Next time u r trying to racist, use the racial word correctly. Gook refers to the viets after white ppl couldn't beat their ass. NOT ASIANS.

And what does racism have to do with being Republican?LOL, looks like YOURE the person who stereotypes and profiles, not me.
ZingZee123456789 2 years ago
LOL so it was ur point to be ignorant and stupid?
There is a real difference between comedy and having bad intentions. Comedy is comedy. It does not have cruel intentions (which you obviously have). There is a fine line, which the commerical did not cross, and that you did.
who said I don't profile people? I never claimed to be a democrat, which you have.

"prove a point without being exactly what you are criticizing"
This is a strategy used in DEBATE. Its called a REBUTTAL. Have you heard these?
Debate: a discussion involving opposing viewpoints. The affirmative and negative sides of the proposition are advocated by opposing speakers.
Rubuttal: to refute by evidence or argument; to oppose by contray proof.
