Hello I love You. Won't you tell me your name" was released in 1968. Ray Davies was advised to sue for plagarism. He didn't, even though most experts think he would have won. Even Jim Morrison admitted the song was heavily influenced by The Kinks.
@TheFlipstein , you're an idiot pal. Have you ever seen the stranglers live . They're absoloutley brilliant musicians. The Kinks version is great but this is a fantastic cover. So go screw yourself!!!
Not a big Stranglers lover but saw them about 15 years ago at the old Man City Maine Road supporting Prince. They did this number and it was not mega but 'tera'. The bass nearly blew me over !
I personally like this version better than the original, it's got more bite, when i play this song with my band live, we do it stranglers style, Hugh is awesome!
@Cptjackjacky Stranglers are very cool, but their version of the original primal Kinks version is like Elvis covering Little Richard's Tutti Frutti - doesn't even come close, but still better than Pat Boone covering Little Richard's Tutti Frutti. :)
@2504marcus No, absolutely not bad but different!
I agree, the original kinks version is very lame, but you should check out their Live recording "One for the Road", there they play this song and it just sounds awesome.
You would agree, that this Stranglers Pop Rock can't win.
I realize you're a fan of the One For The Road version, and I like that too (I love the Kinks in all eras, and solo work by the band members!) but I must say, the original is amazing. When it came out, nothing was more ferocious sounding, and since music is such a sterile sounding waste on radio today, it STILL sounds more raw and primal than anything out now! :)
Hugh was a massive Kinks fan!! Why would he be embarrassed!! My older bruv bought this in the 60's and we both loved it then- we couldn't believe our fave band the Glers would release it years later!! Top number.
Hugh looks almost embarassed to be covering an old Kinks song.
Can't believe they are still rocking on now. I saw them in 1992 and they were considered a spent force then, at least from a recording point of view. They still put on a great live show playing their old classics.
The Stranglers are my fav band, I'm seeing them here in Liverpool in a few weeks time
I think that the best bands/singers in the world come from Britain....Beatles (from my hometown), Stones, Clash, Kinks, Supertramp (from England originally), Queen, Bowie, Elton John, Eric Clapton...need I say more, sorry USA for once ur second best!
I agree with you on that comment. I love all those singers and am glad they changed music for the better. To me, music is universal, even here in the USA. Thank God for the Stranglers!!!!!
Muy buena banda, supieron mantener el espiritu rockero de lo kinks sin alterar la duresa y ritmo de la original, sin duda kinks deveria estar orgulloso de que esta version halla salido tan bien.
I love the pure awkwardness of these things. lol. Love the Stranglers.
