Dog Trick Tutorial: "Clean Your Paws!"

Your dog is AMAZING. You being a wonderful trainer does't hurt either. If you don;t mind me asking, how old is she and when did you start structured training with her. I have my very first GSD puppy (9 wks. old) and I swear I think she hates me. She won't listen to me at all and she HATES making eye contact? I'm hoping it's just her age. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

@mrstaydeedee same problem here, he's 7 weeks old and any of these tricks doesnt work with him! i tried the "OFF" trick he kept biting my hand and wouldnt back off no matter how much time passed!

We had a doberman who used to go straight to the bathroom after a walk and would wait for us to wash its paws because that was the standard practise everyone at home used to follow. When he was a very small puppy, we used to pick him up and take him to the bathroom to wash his paws.....he unbelievably got used to it........

6 minutes my Aussie's new record taught her this trick in 6 minutes she did not like it when i put the treat under the carpet! I wiped my hands then she got the hang of it!

my yorkie dog monty used to do this. he did it himself. just used to go pee, come in, wipe his paws on the mat then fetch his towel and roll on it to dry his face. no prompting or training he just did.

Great videos of possitive reinforcement with animal behaviour and training.For everyone that want to teach their dogs tricks or behaviour you just need to spend a lot of time with them takes hours not minutes most of the time but it creates that stronger bond between the animal and you.

@Smocky1983 for teaching your dog to bark, or growl you will tell them the command of your choosing (I use "speak, and growl" then you will fallow this command by actually barking or growling at them.

Or I taught my pembroke welsh corgi to growl with a toy cause I know she growls when we play tug a war with toys. So I'd say growl and pull on the toy so she'd then growl at me. Soon I was able to do it without the toy.

I tried capturing this when Pan relieves himself, but only if he wipes with all 4 paws. He seems to have figured out that enthusiastic wiping gets a click/treat, but I don't know how to get it on cue. Any suggestions?

I got the front paws doing it similar to the video, but I didn't do them separate. I just rewarded for 1 for a while and then stopped. Pan offered the other one. After that, I only C/T for both.

I actually began teaching Jackson something similar to this with a blanket! He taught himself how to use his paws to scoot in his blanket, so he kinda taught himself that. I'm definitely gonna do wipe your paws now. Thanks for video.

@AgilityFox The way that I do it, a click is followed by a treat 100% of the time whereas a "yes" isn't. I've never experienced this causing any confusion. A 4 paw wipe would be cool too! I've noticed Solea doing it after relieving herself.

@tab289 Hopefully you know that wiping paws after going to the bathroom is scent marking, not wiping paws :) I just read about this trick posted by a blogger on Karen Pryor's website and taught it to my dog too! I am happy to see more and more P+ trainers out there, spreading the word. Cheers!

Taught Jazz this in two minutes yesterday didnt need to do the two paw thing as he did it automatically. Also, I pretended to hide the treat under the rug and then rewarded as this was easier than waiting till he could wipe reliably. will post a video tomorrow. Thanks for the idea

Very cute! We tuaght our GR to wait at the door until we camre to wipe her paws when they were wet, then she would go to her bed and stay there until dry. When she was really wet, she might stay there several hours! (her choice not ours!) LOL!

she likes to wipe and dig at the sofa cushions or on the carpet, so teaching her this behavior should be easy and give her a appropriate outlet for wiping her paws:)
