found you by mistake...what a great music...i listened to it like 10 times in a row and now i m going to listen to it for 11th time-greetings from czech republic
@Bojazzki Thought so. Beautiful guitar. I wish I would have gotten one of those years ago. Ahhh all the "if I only knew.." regrets for lost guitar acquisition opportunities =).
Its amazing how many jazz artists dont know this is actually an operatic piece, written for Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. It's supposed to represent the uncomfortable and hot summer which is a symbol of the Lead's suffering and opression during that time- and is hardly ever played to fit that. However, I am willing to forgive you because this is such an awesome rendition lol
@supermangdp7 Thanks for the background history,I know quite a lot about Jazz and it's Artists but not this one, I listened to many play it and found my own rendition, glad you enjoyed it,and thanks for your lesson in Jazz history,Vic.
You make it look so easy. Great tone. I like your arrangements. I'm going to use a couple of your arrangements as a guide to help me put together my own chord melody arrangements. Thanks for sharing.
@jimi01us Thanks Jimi, I used to play a lot with trio and to fill out the theme I mostly did chord melody arrangements,it works great with only a bass as foundation. Trio playing also forces you to play very melodic outlining the chords, glad I can be off help, greetings Vic.

Thanks Daniel, well in the beginning of the 80ties I found it in a store in Amsterdam, first I was playing a Gibson Charlie Christian model, great instrument but nearly fainted when I heard the price, this was the second option: an Ibanez GB20 (George Benson concept) taken out of production now, Vic.
Thanks clallen87,I'm living in Holland where I have my own Music school, I have no ambition of playing in the States (with all respect) where on every street corner there's a Jazz musician playing for crumbs, greets Vic.
Vic- so true about the crumbs. Some really wonderful players here (I live on Cape Cod, we have a lot of guys who used to play in NYC). Even the best get paid terribly for gigs. I made more playing I-IV-V blues changes on bass in a R&R band in the Virgin Islands in the 80s.
Yes Peleka, I've around too long to know what to expect in this Music business. I've come to understand through harsh experience that Music can be Spiritually deep for-filling but it's better not to practice it as a trade, mark my words, greets Vic.
Absolutely fantastic, Vic. I had this one in mind tomorrow, and I will do that too, but different of course ;-) I like your intro, and the swingy solo, always great to hear your soloing, indeed!
Thanks frank, glad you liked my version, many think it's a shallow tune but it ain't ,I listened closely to how Coltrane played it and it's a very rich composition with many harmonic and melodic possibilities, success with your version,I'll be sitting first row listening sharply, greets Vic.
Thanks allanikitskaya, before I responded to this comment I heard and commented to your Rachmaninov performance, very touching to my Soul, I'm not a Classical trained Musician though I feel and highly appreciate the depth in your playing especially your dynamics, you're a great pianist ,very musical indeed, pleased to meet you, till soon,Vic.
Hey Vic, 5 stars ( it's almost automatic with you) I would love to play half as good as you my friend. Just a great joy to hear your stuff. I posted a vid of my original D'Angelico 1944. Tell me what you think......KEEPON STRUMMIN.........DALLAS VID@TOTOTWICE
Thanks Soto, I love Hard Bop, Art Blackey,Horace Silver, those are the guys. Some play this tune but there's a lot of juice in there waiting to be discovered,it's a great tune, I love playing it,greets Vic.
Great job, Vic. Very tasty playing. I once heard Johnny Smith turn this one "inside out" at his store in Colorado, back in the 70's. He said his solo was "a fourth away". Have you ever heard that term? I assumed it was playing a fourth higher than each chord(?). Interested in your take on this.
Thanks James, Johhny Smith a great player, I used to have a cassette of him playing solo, very good work. I know Allen (Carvetop) here on the tube is a great fan of his. I don't know that term "a fourth away" maybe it has something to do with "altered playing' there are many ways to think in that direction, greets Vic.
Hi, Victor: Great, smooth playing. I've been trying for the past 50 years to play as well as you, but it'll probably take me another 50. Could you tell me what kind of equipment is providing your backgrounds? I've been using a Roland JS-5 Jam Station, but it has its limitations. The abillity to have backgrounds not only enhances my practice sessions, but in the long run has made me a better player. Keep on crankin' then out. I really enjoy it!
Hi Rick, thanks for your enthusiastic reaction,I'll send you a personal note with a recording tutorial of my recording equipment and style, there you'll find all the Stuff I use to get my sound besides hard work of course, greets Vic. (Tutorial coming your way).
Hi Vic. Someone told me to check you out. WOW!!, your lines and chords sound so deep and beautiful. I'm watching your videos clips, I feel like a kid in a candy store. You are a amazin jazz guitarist.Take care.
Well rohamvids, in Holland we have a saying(translated) : High Trees catch a lot of Wind. Once you've set a standard norm everybody expects that same quality, mostly Cool, sometimes a burden on the shoulder, greets Vic.
Hi svidrigajlov, be my guest, wish YT was around when I started, I had to learn by ear, trial and error, just a bash off old records, and a very motivated Soul, greets Vic.
What a nice chord melody intro...what is at 1:13-1:15 Vic? sound familiar to me but I can't recognize it.. after that the sliding technique give a very sweet approach before going into the speed up notes, wow! And the repetition at 1:27-1:31 and 1:45-1:47 is so effective Vic! well too many too describe, you're the man for this kind of music Vic, salute!
Thanks Lanang, for guys like you I'm doing this work, the close listeners. Your answers 1. over Dmi7 I'm playing ascending arpeggio's Dmi7-Emi7-Fmaj7 2.A trick from Pat Martino- over Dmi7 a dorian motive, chord changes to D7#9 to get an altered sound I play the same motive I just a half step higher, creating great tension. 3. A sequence in octotonic (over C7b9 I play C13-Eb13-Gb13) (each of these arpeggio's consist of 7-3-13) well other readers can now also benefit if they have sharp ears,Vic.
Wow thank you for the lesson Vic! Clear explanation but I know it's not easy to make a good phrasing like you. Many jazz guitarist play right substitution choice but it heard weird since they avoid the breath of the melodies. Your phrasing is flowing smoothly! That's the hardest part to learn. Octotonic is new for me! is the formula built from min3rd interval from every root ? Is it still called Octotonic if we use 7th chord instead of 13th?
Thanks Lanang I'm glad you benefit from my explanation, the Octotonic scale is more complex to explain as the use is applicable in many situations, I'll send you a personal mail on the formula so you can experiment with it,it's a mind blowing concept, greets Vic.
This is a great example of melodic soloing. I am still studying this. I think I might transcribe it. That usually helps me retain what I have learned. I have downloaded this video. This is by far the best arrangement of this classic I have ever heard. I usually start my day of by listening to this and a few OLD Beatle tunes.
Thanks for the great reaction Allen, somehow I missed this comment thats why I'm a little late. Are you going to transcribe the whole Impro as well, that's a lot of work, I played it off the top but transcribing note for note is a big job,on the other hand I used to that with solo's from Wes Montgomery,to learn his feel and concepts, till soon Vic.
I was thinking of mamby doing the entire piece. There is some gold here that I need to mine. As far as alot of work goes, did you see what I did with the Johnny Smith chord melodies? That was allot of work!
Guess We're all working hard Allen, the type of playing that we explore brings that along, I will certainly do something with JS book in the future, scoring my finger-style work which I'm doing now is taking up lot's of time too, greetings Vic.
Hey Vic. Great stuff, wonderful intro! And the whole solo has a very, very nice flow. Excellent version of a great tune! Five*, what else? Greetz, Jogi
Thanks Dorian, I guess I developed it by playing with only a bass player and drums a lot, because you want to hear those nice chords once and while, greets Vic.
This one goes in my Favorite's bucket. This is the best arrangement I have heard played on a guitar. Briliant intro. Beautiful harmony. I may be forced to "borrow" that intro.
Thanks Allen, the Intro consists of stacked fourths(in Dorian mode) I love that sound Mc Coy Tyner used to play that a lot behind Coltrane in Modal Jazz. I love that sound, it's so spacious, greetings Vic.
Thanks Barbara, I always say: something stands or falls with a good arrangement, like in Jazz improvising on the form is also important but the Theme has to stand alone as a "cornerstone" of the Tune, that's recognizable for everyone, greets Vic.
This is a really beautiful and relaxing piece of music Vic, your playing is oustanding as always my friend! 5 stars and so so many more from me! I really hope you have a wonderful week! Love, Tamara xx
Thanks Tamara, remains a great composition from Gershwin and always a joy to play ,for an improviser like me, tell me what you think of my newest: In my life, love having you here, big hug,Vic.
Thanks Per,great comment, see that you enjoyed my friend, now rush over to see my new version of " In my life" (with extended Interlude) hope you enjoy, tell me what you think Maestro, Greets Vic.
Victor , man you are playing with such an integrity , you make my heart sing and swing . All that blue notes are exactly right on the spot, just magnificent ! Thank you for sharing with us this beautifuil interpretation of your's . Igor Presnyakov
Thanks Igor, you're a man who knows how to appreciate things when they're Heartfelt, like in Music it demands everything from a musician, you know that like no-one else, man that concentration level has to be sky-high, greets and thanks again,Vic.
It's Fantastic. I can listen to this forever. Unbeliveable, feelings, smooth, groove, laid back, dynamic, careless and carefully all at once, elegance, excitement,...
Hard to explain what I am trying to say. but... Everything every emotion is right there..
I almost fell down the chair when you started the melody. What a great energy and attitude.
Hi gent30x, what great enthusiasm man, these are the comments I live on,you feel my passion for the Music(with a capitol M) You know I think it has to do with the fact that no "Half-Heartedness" exists for me, when you put in your whole being, and play from your Soul that's what people will hear. Of course it's a long journey full of obstacles but from the beginning I set out to do just that, you're a great support, always welcome,Vic.
Hi Vic, Summertime a loved tune of mine and one you can improvise on as long as you wish and I like your arrangement. Boy, you really run with smoothness over those guitar strings as if your skating on ice and great sound as usual, a tune I enjoyed listening to and my score, 5**** Greets, John (Willemstad)
Thanks John, you're right you can improvise endlessly on such a fine progression,I enjoyed playing and you listening, a winning combination, till soon brother,Vic.
Thanks Mitty, in my philosophy a good composition remains good because it's not "throw-away Music" but has a level of Art that speaks to people through Time like a painting of van Gogh, I'm going for Stuff that has remaining value, kind greetings Vic.
Just returned from a business trip and I find a couple of Jazzgut's videos for me to enjoy! You mentioned two of my favorite guitarists Kenny Burrell and Grant Green, two of the smoothest and most sophisticated musicians around! Your playing of Gershwin's famous tune is both wonderful and inspirational too. Thanks.
Thanks Rich, yes indeed it was in a conversation with Fred(great player) he found my playing Burrellish, referring to the fact that I combine chords and single string lines a lot. I guess I developed this style playing many gigs with only bass and drums,I still wanted to hear the beauty of all those rich "Jazz chords". Fred heard that well,I have listened to those guys a lot getting my chops together, greetings Vic.
Hi Juan I'll send you a personal mail on this subject, the trouble is we don't have everything in our own hands, the world is full of jealousy and envy, mostly they're people who are smart but lazy and a lack of talent, they're only here for "material-wealth" and don't give a damn about the value of true "Art",like Naudo has been producing,it's a crying shame that these people have the power in hands to destroy all that's true, Vic.
Thanks Fred, yeah Kenny Burrell what a player, a great inspiration, always cool and Grant Green, isn't it great we can see and appreciate all these incredible musicians on the Tube, something else then a bash of records and an old record-player. great having you around Amigo, Vic.
Thanks so much Artur, great having all friends here in our (digital) living room playing a live concert for you all, sharing our musical experiences, thanks for your support always, god bless,Vic.
Thanks Carlos, good you mention the pleasure, that always has to be there even through tough times, like a good friend once mentioned you've got to pick the flowers along the way, greetings Vic.

Excellent playing! Love your phrasing, and those sweet chord subs! And your tone is so glassy and warm! Bravo! Do you ever play in the States?
clallen87 2 years ago
Thanks clallen87,I'm living in Holland where I have my own Music school, I have no ambition of playing in the States (with all respect) where on every street corner there's a Jazz musician playing for crumbs, greets Vic.
Jazzguts 2 years ago
Vic- so true about the crumbs. Some really wonderful players here (I live on Cape Cod, we have a lot of guys who used to play in NYC). Even the best get paid terribly for gigs. I made more playing I-IV-V blues changes on bass in a R&R band in the Virgin Islands in the 80s.
peleka 2 years ago
Yes Peleka, I've around too long to know what to expect in this Music business. I've come to understand through harsh experience that Music can be Spiritually deep for-filling but it's better not to practice it as a trade, mark my words, greets Vic.

Absolutely fantastic, Vic. I had this one in mind tomorrow, and I will do that too, but different of course ;-) I like your intro, and the swingy solo, always great to hear your soloing, indeed!
See you, Frank

Thanks frank, glad you liked my version, many think it's a shallow tune but it ain't ,I listened closely to how Coltrane played it and it's a very rich composition with many harmonic and melodic possibilities, success with your version,I'll be sitting first row listening sharply, greets Vic.

James
5caudillos 2 years ago

LanangYogya 3 years ago
Jazzguts 3 years ago
Wow thank you for the lesson Vic! Clear explanation but I know it's not easy to make a good phrasing like you. Many jazz guitarist play right substitution choice but it heard weird since they avoid the breath of the melodies. Your phrasing is flowing smoothly! That's the hardest part to learn. Octotonic is new for me! is the formula built from min3rd interval from every root ? Is it still called Octotonic if we use 7th chord instead of 13th?
LanangYogya 3 years ago
Thanks Lanang I'm glad you benefit from my explanation, the Octotonic scale is more complex to explain as the use is applicable in many situations, I'll send you a personal mail on the formula so you can experiment with it,it's a mind blowing concept, greets Vic.
Jazzguts 3 years ago
This is a great example of melodic soloing. I am still studying this. I think I might transcribe it. That usually helps me retain what I have learned. I have downloaded this video. This is by far the best arrangement of this classic I have ever heard. I usually start my day of by listening to this and a few OLD Beatle tunes.
carvetop01 3 years ago
Thanks for the great reaction Allen, somehow I missed this comment thats why I'm a little late. Are you going to transcribe the whole Impro as well, that's a lot of work, I played it off the top but transcribing note for note is a big job,on the other hand I used to that with solo's from Wes Montgomery,to learn his feel and concepts, till soon Vic.
Jazzguts 2 years ago
Vic,
I was thinking of mamby doing the entire piece. There is some gold here that I need to mine. As far as alot of work goes, did you see what I did with the Johnny Smith chord melodies? That was allot of work!

carvetop01 2 years ago
Guess We're all working hard Allen, the type of playing that we explore brings that along, I will certainly do something with JS book in the future, scoring my finger-style work which I'm doing now is taking up lot's of time too, greetings Vic.

Victor,
This one goes in my Favorite's bucket. This is the best arrangement I have heard played on a guitar. Briliant intro. Beautiful harmony. I may be forced to "borrow" that intro.
Cheers,

carvetop01 3 years ago
Thanks Allen, the Intro consists of stacked fourths(in Dorian mode) I love that sound Mc Coy Tyner used to play that a lot behind Coltrane in Modal Jazz. I love that sound, it's so spacious, greetings Vic.

5*.....Barbara
Rumpep 3 years ago
Thanks Barbara, I always say: something stands or falls with a good arrangement, like in Jazz improvising on the form is also important but the Theme has to stand alone as a "cornerstone" of the Tune, that's recognizable for everyone, greets Vic.

gent30x 3 years ago
Hi gent30x, what great enthusiasm man, these are the comments I live on,you feel my passion for the Music(with a capitol M) You know I think it has to do with the fact that no "Half-Heartedness" exists for me, when you put in your whole being, and play from your Soul that's what people will hear. Of course it's a long journey full of obstacles but from the beginning I set out to do just that, you're a great support, always welcome,Vic.

Victor,
Just returned from a business trip and I find a couple of Jazzgut's videos for me to enjoy! You mentioned two of my favorite guitarists Kenny Burrell and Grant Green, two of the smoothest and most sophisticated musicians around! Your playing of Gershwin's famous tune is both wonderful and inspirational too. Thanks.
Rich
sunriverperson 3 years ago
Thanks Rich, yes indeed it was in a conversation with Fred(great player) he found my playing Burrellish, referring to the fact that I combine chords and single string lines a lot. I guess I developed this style playing many gigs with only bass and drums,I still wanted to hear the beauty of all those rich "Jazz chords". Fred heard that well,I have listened to those guys a lot getting my chops together, greetings Vic.

juanignaciomoreno 3 years ago
Hi Juan I'll send you a personal mail on this subject, the trouble is we don't have everything in our own hands, the world is full of jealousy and envy, mostly they're people who are smart but lazy and a lack of talent, they're only here for "material-wealth" and don't give a damn about the value of true "Art",like Naudo has been producing,it's a crying shame that these people have the power in hands to destroy all that's true, Vic.
