  • @7angeldog u went to woodstock? wow! i was only about 13 and living on the other coast and it was just not happening with me. too bad. but this song reminds me of my first true love when we were 16, debby phillips. i was living in denver then, and that cowboy town played this song on the same radio station that also played ironman by black sabboth. and although i'm not a country kinda guy, i sure never forgot this song, and i still really like it. i like dwight yokum too, that's ok isn't it??

  • this lady is still as beautiful today as when she first recorded this song, thanks for posting

  • makes me want to enlist in the Marines

  • the rumour that lynn is lez and enjoys sado-masochistic games is completely untrue

  • I just love the lyrics - just reminds us all to remember: IT'S BORING WHEN IT'S EASY!!!! AAAARGH!

  • Although Lynn made it famous, "Rose Garden" was first recorded by it's writer, Joe South in 1968 3 years before Lynn , another, more soulful/R&B version,by Dobie Gray, a year later in '69 also predated Lynn's version. Lynn did make the song her own, however,by singing in a softer, more sweetly fashion, and slowing down the tempo a little bit, Joe South's original version is a much faster and rockier song.

Check out the two earlier versions by Joe and Dobie, they're here on You Tube as well

  • @cmulwee001 thanks for the joe south version...i liked it as well.....but i loved dobie gray a lot.....

  • @ranisha29

Glad you liked the earlier versions. I can't figure out why Dobie Gray's pre-Lynn Anderson version wasn't a hit(on the pop charts anyway). It has a real soulful groove to it.

Interstesting how all three versions have vastly different arrangements; Joe's original has a fast rocking tempo, Dobie's cover version has a Motown/Philly Soul

flavor(haven't heard The Three Degrees version yet), and then Lynn Anderson

famous rendition is done in a more softer sweet manner

  • @ranisha29

I think the early Dobie Gray version has a neat ad libbed fade out-"You gotta take the Good with the bad" trumpet notes- "sometimes your'e happy, sometimes your sad..'more followed by more soulful horn notes.

We know that Joe South did it first, and then Dobie Gray, but is there REALLY an early version by Elvis? I haven't been able to find it.

But it just goes to show you that sometimes it takes a while for a song to become a smash hit.

  • Great song! This was playing in the labour ward when i was born!

  • Ah que canción más genial... Pero qué dice al último??? =S

  • ♪♫♥ !

  • Thank you for sharing this!

  • The sweet sweet inocense of it all!

  • I beg your pardon, I love this song, it just makes me we want to dance. Come along and share the good times while we can ....

  • @MrSaspag Lynn Anderson is a good friend of mine and she is a great lady who still sings great music. Her voice has matured over the years which is reflected in this version of the song, which I like even better. I am priviledged to have her for a friend

  • @57classic1 Have you ever had a chance to listen to the original version by Joe South?

I highly recommend it. It's a very different arrangement from Lynn's famous cover version. Joe's original is a much faster song. Also, check out another pre-Lynn Anderson version by Dobie Gray

  • A beautiful BLAST from the past! Music was just more meaningful then... keep it alive! Thanks for posting!

  • Good cut. Still not the original though. I wish someone would post a clean version of the original. (Not a poorly mic'd record-player spinning a 45).

  • takes me back...Im just 6 or 7, one of the first songs I ever really remember really listening to ....

    thanks

  • Enjoy a piece of my playlist!

  • This was the number one song in the Uk the day I was born.
