Kaiser Broadcasting (later Field Communications) had stations in Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In my childhood I saw everyone except Boston and Detroit, either because we moved nearby or went on vacation there.
Was great to see this again...I remember watching it every Sunday afternoon, never missed it for years. Brings back so many memories, thanks for posting and keep 'em coming!
The thing I love about this commercial is the broadcast error at the beginning of Star Trek! I remember things like that happening, and WKBD throwing up a graphic, just as they did here with Spock. Really cool to relive that moment!!
Yes, I remember, too. This "Movie Greats" theme was one I always loved, because it meant that "Star Trek" was about to start in a minute or so...it was like my "Star Trek" intro music. Ah, memories. Also, like many kids at the time (much to the chagrin of my traditional parents), I got permission from Mom and Dad to always eat dinner in front of the TV on Saturdays and Sundays so I could see Star Trek (with my sisters and brother, too).
Does anyone remember the horror movie show called the "Saturday Afternoon Shocker" on WKBD TV50 that came on around 1 or 2 o'clock every Saturday in the early to mid 80's? Is the opening to that show on YouTube?
omg...I remember that show and it nearly traumatized me to death as a kid! Just the opening title alone used to send me running out the room! (Yeah I was a little chicken-butt! lmao!)
In Chicago we had the same song: "In Chicago, the kids choice is channel 32". They would have kids singing it and have the music sounding all happy and all. Memories!!
So did we in Philadelphia: "In Philadelphia, the kids' choice is Channel 48!" The logo for Channel 48 (WKBS) looked almost identical as well, same font, etc. When Field Communications dissolved, Channel 48 going dark in August 1983 is one of the most memorable moments of my childhood.
@superbuick That most certainly is Amyre Makupson voicing these spots! I watched WKBD from Bay City way back then and completely forgot about Field Communications or their 'tags'. This was a great find, thanks for posting it!
I remember loving seeing that "Movie Greats" outro, because I knew after that (and after the Field Communications bumper), then it was TIME FOR STAR TREK!!! Although, on this particular day that is shown in this video, I guess something went wrong briefly with the sound.
since everyone's representing with their Field Communications station,i was born and raised in Chicago watching WFLD 32 during it's Field Comm.days and the Kaiser Broadcasting years.
In retrospect, I bet the "32" in WFLD's logo didn't look as good as the "50" in WKBD's.
vgmc7650 4 months ago
So that's why the 50 looks familiar because the same people that owned WKBD also owned Chicago's WFLD-TV. I'm from outside Chicago, by the way.

When did Field Communications take over this and the other four TV stations?
CelesteK 3 years ago
It had to be about 1977-78 when Field Communications took the stations over from Kaiser Broadcasting.

I remember when Star Trek aired on TV 50 Saturdays at 5pm and Sundays at 6pm..back in the late 1970's I was 5 years old at the time.
I also remember Space 1999 coming on after Star Trek on Sundays on TV 50 back in the day.

I remember that one well. They used the bridge from Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" as theme music, IIRC.
Then, of course, there was the "Eight O'Clock Movie" that aired on weeknights.
