  • In retrospect, I bet the "32" in WFLD's logo didn't look as good as the "50" in WKBD's.

  • So that's why the 50 looks familiar because the same people that owned WKBD also owned Chicago's WFLD-TV. I'm from outside Chicago, by the way.

  • if u grew up in detroit like i did this brought back some great memories

  • Kaiser Broadcasting (later Field Communications) had stations in Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In my childhood I saw everyone except Boston and Detroit, either because we moved nearby or went on vacation there.

  • Was great to see this again...I remember watching it every Sunday afternoon, never missed it for years. Brings back so many memories, thanks for posting and keep 'em coming!

  • Does anyone remember when THE TWILIGHT ZONE, STAR TREK, I LOVE LUCY, BENNY HILL, and MASH on WKBD TV 50?

  • @newedition2006 Yes!! That was my childhood!

  • I used to love the song for movie greats...what was it???

  • The thing I love about this commercial is the broadcast error at the beginning of Star Trek! I remember things like that happening, and WKBD throwing up a graphic, just as they did here with Spock. Really cool to relive that moment!!

  • Is that Amyre Makupson doing the voiceover?

  • That sure is.

  • @montauk6 Amyre Makupson...WIN. 80s newscasters - at least in Detroit - had such strange names!

  • @montauk6 wow, I have not heard that name in the past 20+ years. It does sound like her though.

  • Look at that horrible Star Trek print - yikes.

    Thank god for today's technology.

  • @JP5466 Dude.....that was 1982-83! What do you expect???

  • Look how dry the picture was backthen made the look like it was 50 years old compared how it looks now...lol

  • this channel is so similar to KBHK 44 in San Francisco.

  • It was a Field Communications station. The other stations were in Philadelphia,Detroit,Boston and Chicago (my hometown WFLD 32)!

  • @soln4suhreborn how could you forget frisco.

  • @lockenjr yeah,SF did have one,right? KBHK 44!

With the same "Choice is Yours" promos and graphics as the other Field stations.

  • When did Field Communications take over this and the other four TV stations?

  • It had to be about 1977-78 when Field Communications took the stations over from Kaiser Broadcasting.

  • I remember when Star Trek aired on TV 50 Saturdays at 5pm and Sundays at 6pm..back in the late 1970's I was 5 years old at the time.

I also remember Space 1999 coming on after Star Trek on Sundays on TV 50 back in the day.

  • LMAO you and clip are taking me back!

  • Yes, I remember, too. This "Movie Greats" theme was one I always loved, because it meant that "Star Trek" was about to start in a minute or so...it was like my "Star Trek" intro music. Ah, memories. Also, like many kids at the time (much to the chagrin of my traditional parents), I got permission from Mom and Dad to always eat dinner in front of the TV on Saturdays and Sundays so I could see Star Trek (with my sisters and brother, too).

  • Does anyone remember the horror movie show called the "Saturday Afternoon Shocker" on WKBD TV50 that came on around 1 or 2 o'clock every Saturday in the early to mid 80's? Is the opening to that show on YouTube?

  • I know what you are talking about! But I can't find it either..:(

  • omg...I remember that show and it nearly traumatized me to death as a kid! Just the opening title alone used to send me running out the room! (Yeah I was a little chicken-butt! lmao!)

  • I remember that one well. They used the bridge from Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" as theme music, IIRC.

Then, of course, there was the "Eight O'Clock Movie" that aired on weeknights.

  • Does anyone remember the bumper song, "In Detroit the kids choice is tv 50"? I loved this station when I was in Michigan.

  • In Chicago we had the same song: "In Chicago, the kids choice is channel 32". They would have kids singing it and have the music sounding all happy and all. Memories!!

  • So did we in Philadelphia: "In Philadelphia, the kids' choice is Channel 48!" The logo for Channel 48 (WKBS) looked almost identical as well, same font, etc. When Field Communications dissolved, Channel 48 going dark in August 1983 is one of the most memorable moments of my childhood.

  • @superbuick That most certainly is Amyre Makupson voicing these spots! I watched WKBD from Bay City way back then and completely forgot about Field Communications or their 'tags'. This was a great find, thanks for posting it!

  • @shelly10538 like the others did they also have one at night that said in detroit the choice is yours on channel 50

  • @lockenjr I don't remember. I had no idea that those were used for other tv stations, that is so weird.

  • I remember loving seeing that "Movie Greats" outro, because I knew after that (and after the Field Communications bumper), then it was TIME FOR STAR TREK!!! Although, on this particular day that is shown in this video, I guess something went wrong briefly with the sound.

  • Yep watched Bill Kennedy when i was sick and didnt have to go to school. Ch 50 was all i watched back then.

  • Iam from michigan and watched WKBD 50 all the time growing up. Great times,Miss those days.

  • Anyone remember Bill Kennedy At the Movies ?

  • 1pm-3pm weekdays-- grew up in Detroit back in the day...

  • KBHK San Francisco. I was born and raised in this city

  • since everyone's representing with their Field Communications station,i was born and raised in Chicago watching WFLD 32 during it's Field Comm.days and the Kaiser Broadcasting years.

  • wow. I actually remember that "Field Communications" bumper ...

  • I remember when it was Kaiser.

  • is that sigorney weaver speaking

  • Nope, thats Amir Makeupson.

  • The Days Before Fox,Upn,The CW

  • Classic WKBD. Even that Star Trek "please stand by" slide looks familiar to me...

  • Ahh! They must have been having trouble with the sound.

  • have you got any clips and promos for CW 50 yet,if so please let me know

  • Could someone post Bill's commentary from "Bill Kennedy At The Movies" ?

  • Memories of growing up back in Detroit in the early 80's

  • I grew up there too. Loved it.
