I didn´t het the ending... so he saw himself?his future or what?damn...awesome movie, even though Iam not sue I got the endng right O.o can anybody help?
I loved Alan and Emma in this, I don't think they could have found two better people. Alan played the part perfectly and even though I had to cringe more than once at certain parts, I thought this was done amazingly.
Wow! Was not expecting to enjoy that as much as I did. Great work by all parties involved, and the poem was deliciously written. I absolutely hate to draw a parallel here but did anyone find his character was sort of similar to Snape's? The whole "I've surgically removed my feelings" part, and lusting after a long lost love that caused him to live his life so completely stuck in the past. Interesting.
I agree. As much as I prefer to recognize Alan Rickman as a very versatile actor, I can't help but see the similarities between "Him" & Snape. Both characters are trapped in the past of a failed relationship, and have learned to let go of all emotion out of fear that they will re-experience their loss.
By the way, I didn't quite grasp the meaning of the ending. Can you help?
@karik333 What part did you not understand exactly? If you are referring to the elderly man at the end, that was Massimo, the man I presumed to own the restaurant, who used to always be so lively when the pair visited in the past. Now he seems to be simply a shell of his former self...at least, that's what I gathered :P
@karik333 What I got from it is that Massimo, as his current withired self, represents the failed relationship between Alan and Emma's charachters. Though once striving, they have moved on. This could aslo explain why the director chose the end shot to be of Alan and Massimo.
wonder why Alan has never won an oscar...nobody could have pulled this off like he did..he is truely one of the finest actors of all time..thanks so much for uploading... :)
I agree with the comment above! I have been touched by this dramatization, because I also have been through such a failed relationship and the meeting is so bittersweet... makes you think.. I loved it!
Is it only me or do feel also connected to Alan's character (without a name). Oh I suddenly feel sad, because I know such situations only too well. Wine, old love, social incompetence to deal with such an awful situation...

Bollocks. I may well be looking into a mirror into the future. If I could be that lyrical I might consider myself a bit luckier.
