Have you ever stopped to realize that when you were driving by that the fire department just got there? It takes an average department about 5-6 minuets to respond. At that point in time, the building could have flashed over (meaning everything inside the building caught fire, including the oxygen) So before you start making assumptions about the fire department, I suggest you think before you speak. If you think it's easy, why don't you gear up and drag a charged 1 and 3/4 hose into a building

all i can say is as a fireman is that the average response time for a department that is not full time is about 10-15 min i know this all to well. i have been on my department for a few years and even with 3 full trucks that can role out with in about 3-4 min our best time is still pushing 5-7 min.

This is a perfect example of the volunteer firefighter may truthfully be the most skilled firefighter out there but when he or she is at work and not available to respond there are delays. Citizens need to get involved in their community before an emergency occurrs and find out what your communities shortcomings are and work to fix them. With that said most citizens are just complacent and do nothing until something bad happens and then complain and critisize.

Volunteer FD: By the time one of you decided to call 911... the call goes out... they get the call... MOST are probably at work during a daytime fire and response time is much slower... Some cannot even get the calls at work... they then have to respond to the station to actually get the trucks (And only certain members are drivers)... then they have to drive past sight seers like yourself to get there...

While many onlookers see us "doing nothing", in reality we are doing everything we can to protect life and savable property. I understand your comments being in the heat of the moment. There are however, common misconceptions among civilians regarding operating procedures for Fire Depts. The main priority here was the life safety and evacuation of surrounding exposed homes.

Fair enough, but for what it's worth, rushing in to a scene and getting into the street or alley where the fire is isn't going to help responders get to the scene - it might even block them from getting there. Also, as @lfdlumpy said, the guy beside you should have stopped recording on his CELL PHONE and used the other handy feature of it to call in to the 9-1-1 center.
