I used to develop in Linux, but I wouldn't recommend it to most people, since you have to be a geek in order to use it.

I beg to differ, I have grandparents that use Ubuntu without needing any more help than they would with windows.

That's either because they're smarter than average, but most likely because they don't do much, except clicking on Firefox icon to surf the web and read e-mails. But try to ask them to configure a web cam or install a different program? I bet they won't know how to use a command line to make a build out of source. Besides, you can't give one example and apply it to the entire market. The fact is that most people wouldn't know how to deal with Linux. They can barely keep up with Windows stuff.

1. Most of those points apply to Windows. The only reason they wouldn't is due to Windows current monopoly on the market (thus more support from software vendors for things like Webcam driver installers/ete). But, as your seeing with the large manufacturers, that market is being challenged, and you'll see some of those main detractions start to blur.

2. Ubuntu is FOSS, so it wins the internet, automatically. No ifs ands or buts. Only a crack-addicted wompus stomper would disagree.

Linux has been out for MANY years, and it's always been FOSS, but it hasn't really gotten a whole lot further than almost a decade ago. I think being FOSS is also where the problem of Linux begins - customers want timely updates, tech support service and a well built, tested and pre-configured apps for their computers and not some student's poorly written soft with bunch of bugs and no updates. Money is what drives the consumers market not FOSS!
