It's the speed of the take-off, and it takes controlled effort by jet propulsion, i.e., you push on the floor very fast to go up. Speed is built up by doing slow work as a beginner (and holding poses), and in later years doing tendus etc. in 1/4, 1/8, and faster times. It takes years. It takes much more time to learn to protect the legs and spine coming down. Best to go up off of one leg and land on two feet at first (like a plie-releve on one leg, but as a jump, landing in fifth).
It is rather good, actually, because it is bang on the music - something which makes or breaks this variation as much as the body work.

I saw this exact ballet, In Australia about 2 weeks ago..the choreography has changed slightly as has the dancer but still very well executed
