Great vid, but when the narrator says "under fire" I don`t buy it. America enjoys total air superiority and so its jets on the ground are never under serious threat. They weren`t under serious threat in Vietnam, and they were never under any real threat in the Balkans or the Gulf. The last western fighters under a very, very real threat were the handful of subsonic Harriers in the Falklands War. Round the clock sorties and totally exhausted maintenance crews, fighting for their very survival.

I remember one real close call when I was a soldier at Tuzla airbase in Bosnia during the Kosovo war in 99. We were in the mess and suddenly some officer came into it yelling "Alarm" - we were lazy, cause we had some drills before - after his "get going thats the real deal" it was clear that something would happen. 3 Serb fighters were inbound to our place which was full of helicopters - they shot 2 of them down only about 2 min before base. It might have been a rare occassion!

Late answer, sorry - I think we have a misunderstanding here 2 serb fighters where shot down. Us hilicopters were all sitting on the ramp like ducks - that would have been a costly they if the serbs would have made it...........

@transonicbuoy1 Maybe it's just too early in the morning and I'm not parsing what you're saying right, but the Americans did not have uncontested air superiority in Vietnam. The MiG-17 alone - which was at least a generation older than any American fighters deployed - shot down 16 F-105s, 32 F-4s, 11 F-8s, and quite a few transport and attack aircraft too. That's not even speaking of MiG-19s or -21s, or even worse, the omnipresent SAMs (before the days of dedicated anti-radar weapons).
