Beer Tasting 52: Steinlager from New Zealand

No offense but drinking a beer like this in a wine glass is like pouring a Heineken in a glass and telling someone it's good beer. This got 60 out of 100 on beer advocate plus green bottles tend to "shunk" the aroma. India Pale Ale's are the beer with more complex aromas like grapefruit, mango, pine and floral aromas the list goes on. Lagers are the worst beers (imperial stouts and ipa are the best maybe barleywines) too bad you couldn't review a better beer.

Michael, watched your review again and very entertaining. Yes NZ is Rugby and we now hold the RWC! I am in Australia for a few years for work and have found a beer called James Squires Amber Ale. I like it and im fussy about my beers and Would love to see you review it if you can source it locally, if not more than happy to send you a bottle for the purpose.

NZ has been going through somewhat of a beer renaissance as of late. If you want a great NZ beer, try Emerson's Bookbinder, Epic, Moa, Harrington's, or Yeastyboys. These are some excellent beers that show NZ's great beers.

Yeah! I am sure there are many great beer from New Zealand especially pilsner style brews but I have not had a chance to taste them. Would be grateful if you can point/direct me to a few names that represent the pinnicles of bottom fermenting style lager / pilsner from NZ.

@michaelyblam In NZ this is a pretty average mass produced beer. We have some amazing boutique breweries, like Emersons, Epic, Harringtons, Moa, 3 Boys, etc. that make Steinlager taste like drain water. They'd be hard to find internationally. Might be worth the flight down :)

its great that your taking a proper tasting approach to the beer but if you want a good NZ beer try one of our great micro breweries Emersons, Epic, Mata, Wigram to name a few. and if your set on a lager try one of our pilsners, NZ has a great climate for saaz hops giving a uniquely NZ take on the brew. happy drinking p.s. its maori not maouri

What he said Steinys are a very good drop imho. Corona Heineken Waikato tui speights doesnt worry me so long as its cold. this guy is and absolute sasauge!!!! i am a brewer for steinlager new zealand among other beers and not only can he not pour it but he canot even review it, any old hick can pull out a whole swathe of insitefull crap from a beer conesouir book and piece it together to sound credible. personally i like to drink my steinlager from a stein how these beers have been been drunken from by germainic and austrian beer drinkers for decades

although there's a dedicated stemware for every beverage, the important rule is to serve it in, whichever temp, stemware, methods of pouring, consuming in the manner that best pleases you. i agree with Michael and i see it more as a tasting equipment. i purchased a glass similar to Michael's for tasting purpose... be it single malt, wine, beer, grappa etc.. =) slainthe

It REALLY shows how blatantly ignorant you ARE! Putting aside wine/beer, a glass (notice I do not say wine glass) of this tulip shape: 1.will hold the temperature better than a pint glass; 2.the thin glass is better to examine the clarity of the beer but most importantly 3.the tulip shape traps the aroma and allows one to study the beer better than beer glasses. I drink beer with beer glasses but I taste beer with glasses that maximise the beer.

am from NZ, and this beer is discusting, to be ohnest all of NZ beer is not good (lion red, tui, export, they're all horrible and have no flavour, structure or substance, taste like flavoured water)... even corona that tastes like water is 1000000 times better than NZ's premium beer.. truth..

This Ridel glass is one of the best vessels of tasting beverages whether it's beer, wine or whisky in my opinion. Steinlager is a very distinctive beer, and as a result it polarizes opinions. You either like it or you really don't like it. I love it because it is very bitter compared to a lot of lagers out there.

the wine is very nice here - especially the orchids around the top end of the south island. Im a S/blanc and cab/sav drinker myself.

Although I have travelled to almost 30 countries in the past, I have never been to New Zealand. I hear hiking in the South Island is simply fantastic. Love to do that as well as going to watch some local rugby matches. Most of all and of course, it's a must to samples a few good drinks. Nice talking to you - have a great week!
