@islamDick Orthodox Christianity is not aggressive or violent, you are talking about Vatican. Vatican is actually NOT Christian, however they abused Christian faith to become rich and politically powerful.
Look for: Vatican's Holocaust 2/6 - Nazi Croatia death camps and you will see what Vatican really is.
@misschattyclare God and Son of God are heavenly beings. There are many heavenly beings practicing Buddhism (I'm not specifically referring to Jesus). There are more than 1 heaven. There are 32 or 34 heavens (cannot remember the exact number). That is the reason why every religion claims that their GOD is true and indeed their God is true because there are many heavens. Buddha is out of these 6 paths.
Ddidn't Jesus have to learn a lot of things when he was young like learning how to walk,to feed himself, to speak and so on? Jesus wasn't born knowing anything more than my three sons....so I'm sure He would have wanted to learn about Buddhism.
@1macboo Christians don't look at it that way I believe, Jesus according to my understanding was the divine God incarnate, an exact equal to the Father and Spirit. So knowledge is one thing, growing in knowledge helps us (not God) to do better, but moral sense is more important. Jesus had a pure heart, a pure soul, he was God....so all he wanted from when he was born was to do the will of God. He learned from the Father through the Spirit of heavenly things.
@QuiteNot I don't know...didn't Jesus beg the Father to spare Him?If He simply wanted to do the will of God why beg to be spared? Didn't Jesus tell His diciples that only the Father Knew what they were asking (regarding end times)...Jesus was NOT all knowing as the man from Nazerath. But as Christ, risen Lord He is. But thats a mystry to me, I've always struggled with the man Jesus and Christ. the Lord.
@1macboo It's a hard concept, that let's be honest can be hard to grasp and causes alot of confusion. The way I think it happened is that Jesus was bodily a man "and" had the soul of God, he only became knowing of heavenly things through the Holy Spirit. This allowed the communication between God and man to be fully reconciled with God, as Jesus said you will receive the spirit from the Father, I will send him to you. Jesus did beg to be spared from his death, but only if it was his will....
After learning some things about the Christian faith, I only understand some things, I still can't believe in God. It's a faith...which means it's just a feeling, a hope...there is no evidence. I need evidence, God has never talked to me nor anyone I have known. Pretty clear to me, he cannot be real. I know a bit more about science, and it seems more likely that we evolved like all life, instead of life always magically existing.
@QuiteNot The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. In science, energy can not be created or destroyed. so we did it come from? No one has seen energy, yet we know it exist through it's physical attributes(Light, heat, etc.) Now we are so quick to believe Science, but why not the spiritual things. No one has seen God but you can know that he may exist through the physical attributes, way more than the definition of energy has to offer.
@monilove5 Spiritual things are fruity. Miracles (lol), demons (rofl), angels (pffft), etc....Unless i can actually know god i cannot believe in him. So many things in spirituality are just plain stupid to believe.
Science is way more fruitful to becoming open minded, respectful and developing your mind into a mature adult than religion..... I have asked god to reveal himself to me if he exists. still no answer.....also we don't know the laws outside our universe so who says matter can't..
....be created nor destroyed. Maybe matter has always existed, etc...something had to but god ? Evolution explains the variety of life forms on the earth, how races came into being.....all religions are just ways to explain nature and to give our lives purpose a greater purpose.....to explain why we have war, love, fertility, agriculture, weather, painful births, rainbows, natural disasters, luck, dreams, etc....the Bible gives answers to these mysteries of life just like the pagan religions do.
Science has real answers to our questions, not more questions like religion, god created the universe, how ? Did you know that if you picture yourself doing a task in your head that the brain creates the same activity as if your doing it ? And people who are hypnotised actually create false memories of past lives and they swear they were real ? Ever seen christians rolling on the floor believing they are being possessed by the holy spirit ? Ever heard of people believing they are jesus or god ?
Don't you guys know Jesus Christ went to India and Tibet to learn Buddhism for 18 years. Don't believe me, search for "The Lost Years of Jesus Christ in Tibet" or"Jesus, the Teenage years" at yahoo. There are hard evidence that Jesus went to India and Tibet to learn Buddhism.
There are also hard evidence showing early Christianity was similar to Buddhism. Early Christianity taught reincarnation
Christians who 'look to themselves' as the ultimate authority figure are not Christians, except to say that we have internalised the Holy Spirit. Christ is my authority so I have hope. Otherwise I would have no hope of redemption, of forgiveness or life beyond death. I am capable of accepting that other people have different views to mine and am not afraid of it! Difficulties arise where we can become rigid, closed-minded and afraid of the enormity of God. Christianity is about love&relationship
Christ gave us one law--love your neighbor. WE have to be the ones who interpret that law in our individual life and situations. God doesn't "program" us like robots, we have to DECIDE within our own heart what's right and wrong, so yeah we ARE the authority figures, at least in carrying out Christ's way for our lives.
So if one has no belief in Buddha or Jesus, when they die and their family cannot decide what kind of funeral to have? The mortuary will just burn you to ashes and give your ashes to the survivor.
I am sorry but as an educatedw Catholic, I can say with certainty that what Brother Steindl-Rast is saying is pure and unadulterated HERESY! What is wrong with you people for supporting this?
@markloyet - Do you mean educated or indoctrinated? For the 1,700 years (I defy ANYONE to challenge me on that figure by more than 100 years!) that the Roman Catholic church has been in existence, it has promoted discourse in one form or another. There is more to the life of Jesus than we realize and evidence might also exist that he learned Buddhism in India while he lived there during his teens and twenties.
@impermanentoo - That video is quite insightful and I'm glad you pointed that out. I urge all who want to understand both Christianity and Buddhism better to check it out. Moreover, it may also set some light on Islam (at least the Sufi tradition) as well.
It is easy to find the meeting ground of not just Bud. and Chr. religions, but ALL, incdg. Islam, Hindu, Jew, etc. and it must be emphasised in the 20th century for all mankind. Inter-faith amity demands this. However, each religion has fundamentalists who wish to project their religion as THE valid religion and their scripture authoritative/ from god, etc. For ex.,in S Korea,Xian evangelicals have uprooted Buddhism 50% and instigate fanatic converts to demolish Buddhistic temples.
@Deathrune456 - I would have to agree! If you look at both the Buddhist scriptures and you look at the Gospels, you'll find more consistencies than you will even with Judaism!
Yeah, just look at Hinduism, its a very transendic religion for the reason that if you ever look into it you will see the parallels with all other religions around the world are more of the same but with a different perspective into it as well as culture.
1 John 3:19-20 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.+++
God an Islam of Jesus Christ is bigger as a something
Its simpler than it sounds, and God helps you and you see miracles! the Bible says, take care of the things of GOD and the rest (money, food etc..) will be added. And its true! Try it!
TRY not to sin, but if you do ask Jesus for Forgiveness, whats the key not to sin? become a SAINT! now you say a Saint!? are you crazy!? well no actually, being a Saint means being separated from Earthly matters, Sin and being closer to God by praying and Reading the Bible.
This is the Key of life,Love and thank God for Jesus for saving us from the curse of Sin.
And love one another.
That is all, one you do that you can have experiences with God and hear his voice.
Buddism is good in teaching you to be peaceful, and Knowing Jesus is good for knowing that there is a spiritual world that wants your soul. you choose God or Satan.
You will occasionally sin from time to time, but as long as you feel bad for your sin and tell Jesus you're Sorry then he forgives you.
Buddhism is beyond god concept and many who practise the religion will have the first hand experience. Buddhism is a religion where we purify ourselves to the extend we have the divine quality that we need no extra help. Eventually we will attain Nibbana, a blissful mental state that we can experience this life itself! It is eternal. Not only that, every decision is made by us. We are in control of our life!
spending billions of years in a hot-and-cold hell like state otherwise is a good motivator, lol. Im just pulling your chain, i may disagree with you, but that sounds like a nice theology. I as a christian just think that purification and the pinnacle of what life is can be achieved through relationship with god, and the rest of his children in creation. by the way we also make the decisions in our lives as well, free will perhaps? it would be nice to talk, but anyway, god bless(got ya!)
As an enlightened Taoist I agree whole heartedly with the comments regarding the harmony between Buddhism and Christianity and indeed many perspectives of almost ALL faiths.
We are all looking for the same thing with it's many different names in many wonderfully different and yet so similar ways.
Love to those who seek the truth in equanimity for the liberation of all.
Liked the comment about the deep mystical experience potentially landing you in an asylum!
"if God didn't show up during your trial who will help you?"
"I being betrayed by JESUS CHRIST, HOLY SPIRIT & GOD... as it's writtten in luke 15-29...& interesting the Bible didn't mention abt him anymore...Liar!!
30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said unto him, aSon, thou art ever with me, and ball that I have is thine. 32 It was ameet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found. Finish the chapter.
Buddhim and Christianity is the 2 best religions on the world i been to Thailand and met a lot of very nice buddhist, sadly many is very poor in Thailand. :(
To be poor is not pathetic, if they are rich spiritually. The most unfortunate people are those who are rich but poor spiritually. they suffer every single day think of means and ways to gather wealth. At the end of the day they can't even bring a single penny along. Not only that, they repent upon their fault during dying moment, will they go to heaven?
Christians recognize the Holy Spirit WITHIN as our internal authority. The Holy Spirit IS love, which Prince Siddhartha taught we must continuously honor/practice, right?
"Loving Kindness". never fight anger with anger. Misunderstanding with misunderstanding. As a Buddhist remember there faith teaches "Proselytization". Don't take it as an attack on your faith. In there understanding they are doing "Gods Work". If you live in the West most likely you converted from Christian to Buddhist, As I did. Remember at one time you mint have acted the same way. Be understanding.
So if it comes internally why does every christian I meet feel pity for everyone else "that doesn't have Jesus in their heart" so they have to feel bad constantly for a non-beleiver/buddhist...
Contradicting isnt it...Why Can't they just keep it personal, the more they speak about it, the less they are afirmed, because they have to tell others/speak about it for confirmation or sharing experience that 'uplifts their dieing faith'
Who is this person or these people? What church do they belong to? What do these people have to say about the Dogma that Jesus Christ is the only way?
Two years ago, I pretty much believe in God and Jesus but I was not really a Christian. Then, I encountered Buddhism and I was both but, my peers told me I had to one or the other so I chose Buddhism.
I love these guys. They make my fear of not believing in Jesus as the only way, go away.
Nice lesson! My grandfather was a pioneer in promoting Buddhist-Christian dialogue during the 1960's (Rev. Dr. Lynn de Silva from Sri Lanka). I agree that the 20th century was significant in bringing Buddhism and Christianity closer.
Why not follow both, and you'll see there is little debate in terms of path. If you follow one, then follow one, follow two if you must. Some even say three is the magic number.

Yeah, just look at Hinduism, its a very transendic religion for the reason that if you ever look into it you will see the parallels with all other religions around the world are more of the same but with a different perspective into it as well as culture.

The full truth is both, esoteric and eXsoteric.
The cross of Christ is not only vertically but also horizontally!
In Jesus is not only the Perfect Christianity and Perfect Buddhism, but also the perfect Islam!

Try it!
I GUARANTEE IT!!

So,
Love God with all your Heart and Soul
Love one another
TRY not to sin, but if you do ask Jesus for Forgiveness, whats the key not to sin? become a SAINT! now you say a Saint!? are you crazy!? well no actually, being a Saint means being separated from Earthly matters, Sin and being closer to God by praying and Reading the Bible.

I'm under the radar, ssssshhhh

Love to these guys.

Nice lesson! My grandfather was a pioneer in promoting Buddhist-Christian dialogue during the 1960's (Rev. Dr. Lynn de Silva from Sri Lanka). I agree that the 20th century was significant in bringing Buddhism and Christianity closer.
