What's so cool about this debate is that Dr. Craig actually said that he wasn't as confident about this debate and thought that he had a chance of losing, saying also that he prepared a lot more for this debate than others. I'll admit, I was nervous too -- I've seen Dr. Carrier absolutely annihilate theists early on in debates. Nothing could have been further from the truth in this debate -- this just goes to show that Dr. Carrier's arguments only work on pansies who aren't prepared...
@Steelsixtysix No seriously, please. Please, throw the Christ-mythicist stuff in the trash where it belongs. What's next, saying that the First Century Temple in Jerusalem was not destroyed?I mean, every single historian in the whole wide world trusts Josephus' account about it.
did he mention Pontius Pilate leter to Tiberius Caesar, Emperor of Rome. This Historic Letter is from the "Archko Volume" containing manuscripts, in Constantinople, and the Records of the Senatorial Docket, taken from the Library at Rome, Translated by Drs. McIntosh and Twyman of the Antiquerian Lodge, Genoa, Italy. This has been checked and is in accord with the copy of the original lodged in the British Museum, which has verified the accuracy of the transcription. Verified in November, 1935.?
What evidence do we have that Jesus rose from the dead? The gospels. Outside of the gospels no one wrote of this event as first hand witnesses. And the gospel tales regarding the resurrection all differ and blatantly contradict one another as to the so called facts and circumstances regarding this alleged event. These facts alone discredit the validity of the gospel accounts and honestly without the gospels you would not even have known about this myth.
@chatpilot Contradictions = discredit of an account? I don't know how well such a theory would hold up with historians. For example, their are contradictory sources regarding the sinking of the Titanic. According to you I should discredit the validity of the accounts of the Titanic sinking, is that correct?
Why do so many people just ignore Christianity because there are so many different religions? Just because there are other stories does not mean Christianity is not truth. When you delve deeper into Hinduism or cults like JW's they fall apart but you can't take down Christianity because it is truth.
oh come on like a million religions with similar stories. Some dude dies and rises and becomes a god. Do we really need a debate about this? isnt it obvious that its a myth? come on....
@drcraigvideos Whoever told you dead matter brought forth life was toying with you. This atheist might have been mixing terms, or illustrating a lack of understanding with the basic principles of biology and cosmology. Who ever told you that doesn't know what they're talking about. You could argue that it's hard to see how life as we know it came from carbon, though. Matter is just a general term for any collection of atoms. But then again I'm not a scientist.
@drcraigvideos You're made of dead matter - life is made of dead matter - there's no such thing as "living matter". Life is an arrangement of matter, not a type of matter.
Don't try and confuse magic with evident reality - it's just silly, not to mention dishonest. (Assuming you care about that sort of thing..)
Dr. Carrier didn't carry me. He confirmed my belief even more. The Bible is a historical record as was proved by the Dead Sea Scrolls. More gulable people will believe Dr. Carrier by his smooth, child-like comunication. However, I am a firm believer in the Holy Spirit. See the you-tube vid "famous atheists last words". The common atheist trick today is this "crazy" and "halucinogenic" label. We have to pray for them.
...that it was just a remake of a lesser known film made thirty years earlier, same plot, characters, storyline, maybe even title, etc.. wouldn't you conclude that the older film was the original and the one you had come to love was merely an unoriginal remake? Carrier is merely showing that the gospels cannot be trusted, since they're unoriginal mythical symbolical stories written by unknown, unsourced, non contemporary authors, including tons of known forgeries, contradiction
Well, if stories in the bible are incredibly similar to known myths that were told around that time or (and this is more often the case) for many many years before the bible was compiled, then it's far more reasonable to assume that the stories in the bible were borrowed from these earlier myths, not that they are genuine or true, especially since they're unoriginal and not the first to tell such tales. If you see a film today and come to like it, and later you come to find out
I'm watching this currently with an open mind and Mr. Carrier is trying to disprove the ressurection by explaining there are similarities between this story and others?
I'm sorry but I don't understand this reasoning at all.
If I found that gravity were real, but then saw that some made up theories had aspects of the theory of gravity within it, does that make gravity fake?
I mean, if he is making a logical point, I just want him to explain how..
i was expecting a little bit more of intelligent speeches from Mr. Carrier. Instead he went on on how unreliable the gospels and such were. First of all, his examples were just absolute rubish. Second, its not even the subject of the debate. I just dont see how people can take this guy seriously
Mr. Carrier engages in unhinged speculation about the mental state of historical figures and uses all kinds of inflammatory language such as "hallucination" and "cult," implying that early Christians were mentally ill (essentially a long-winded ad hominem), then breaks down when Craig schools him.
When it comes down to it, the only convincing evidence for Jesus's resurrection would be if everyone, whatever their belief or religion, saw him wandering around the streets and doing amazing tricks like making people's amputated limbs grow back, making houses rise into the air or other magical things. Using texts from one book as evidence just isn't enough.
I would have liked to ask Dr. Carrier even given that the Gospel of Mark and the others are filled with Ole Testament Scriptures and allusions to them and symbolism, how does this make what they are saying any less authoritative or historical? The writers where trying to tell their story i the best way they could to influence as many as possible. It would make sense to have them allude to authoritative texts and symbols they would understand.
For Carrier's ideas about the Gospel of Mark to be true, then its writer must have been a great scholar and writer to have included so much allegoric, influences and similarities with the books of the Old Testament. The writer must have been brilliant. But we are also supposed to except that the writer was a delusional schizophrenic.
@drcraigvideos ... a question and answer session with students asking them questions and the speakers responding, which was mentioned at the beginning of the debate and was to follow the speakers closing comments. When do you see that in this video?
@RageicaNiels On the contrary, even though I'm a Christian and a huge WLC fan, I think Dr. Carrier presented one of the most intelligent arguements I've heard from an atheist. I don't agree with him, but he presented his case well without resorting to the usual diatribe atheists seem to think are sound arguments.
I love Dr. Craig's face during this guy's intro. Its the expression of ''.....well this is going to be easier than I thought.''
