Kennedy knew that Nixon would win in a landslide in '72. So his plan was to sit it out, then run in 1976, when Nixon would be ineligible. But in 1974, Kennedy's family urged him not to run and he reluctantly agreed. That decision ate at him; he never felt that Jimmy Carter was a worthy successor to his brother.
