It seems the carboy is to small or the batch too big. Also there appears to be a gas leak at the seal of the cork. It probably doesn't matte rto much. Ive found that people who do not practice 100% sanitation like all the manuals suggest, still get good brews 98% of the time.
I just had a situation like this three days ago after only 8 hours of adding the yeast. The airlock seemed to be about to explode and making a loud noise. The room was a bit warm, could that be the reason? Will my beer be ok? Just to make sure I checked the gravity today and it dropped from 1.050 to 1.020
Oh, ouch...been there done that. I had a blowoff tube on a Vanilla Creme ale and the krausen receded so I popped an airlock on it and started sanitizing the blowoff hose. In the middle of the night I heard a funny hissing sound (I kept the beer in my bedroom...much cooler and more stable) and woke up to the beer foaming up through the airlock!!! Unbelievable!!!

Think a blow off tube would be more appropriate until the krausen settles. Or go with a larger carboy.

I did after I found this scene :-) I think I should just always put one on.

I've just always used a tube. Never actually seen what one did when it was overwhelmed. Batch turn out ok?
engine3lt 4 years ago
Yeah, never had a problem with overflow and contamination. :-)

I did a wheat beer a week ago and even with a tube it blew. Some hops got stuck in it and it pressurized.
