I like their alternative to the original Witch's Ride. I cracked up at the "I can't count" comment and her scream...which must have been more difficult than the high note at the end. LOL!
Thank you for posting this! My first opera was being taken to see Hansel & Gretel in SF and Ms. Russell played the witch. I think i was about 5. I was hooked on opera and everything Anna Russell did from then on.
Anna Russell is fabelhaft. I wish I had had a teacher like her. Everyone should see the entire part after the Hexenritt (witche's ride) when the witch changes clothes. Her hrumphs and coos are hilarious. As for Anna Russell, everyone should listen to her comedy elsewhere on Youtube.
This is part of a gorgeous opera by Englebert Humperdink a German composer of the 19th century. It has a ton of beautiful songs and is an incredible work of art that has been neglected mostly for commercial reasons. I remember hearing these songs as a child and they are magical and terrific to listen to at any age, both artistic and entertaining in every sense.
im 30 and my grandfather bought this movie on the old laser disc when i was 4 i havent seen it or even thought about it in years, now id like to buy it for 3 year old. Even though it kinda scared the hell out of me i still liked it.
I wouldn't be shocked if it was on VHS at a local library. But, on DVD? No idea. It just seems like the kind of movie that a library would keep, in the plastic covering and everything. You know?
I took my daughter to see this many years ago. They are indeed clay figures. It was touted as a great innovation at the time B.C.G (before computer graphics)
Oh, wow - There is the total joy of life in her voice - what a great record of this wonderful woman. Complete with ho yo to ho's, it's just too good!
I'm sorry I didn't get to see this film as a child. (We did have an LP of Hansel & Gretel - not with Anna Russell sadly.)
(BTW the character of the Witch was very frightening to this child, even on LP! I still shiver remembering her muttering her pseudo-Latin spells, horribly sinister.)
I also bought with DVD, having loved the film as a child. And boy was I disappointed with the transfer. I am hoping someday a new print will be struck and a new DVD will be released. Maybe now that BluRay is the sole HiDef format?
I have the DVD. And it looks like shit. This is a really great movie!! Very overlooked, but the transfer looks like a bootleg you'd buy off the streets!! Sadly, I don't think it will ever get a clean transfer...It will probably just decay
I too have seen this film in the theater when I was 8 or 10. My kids have seen it but they were even younger than that and they're driving now. Will have to get this on DVD or an older VHS.
you can get it from amazon but i don't know if it has a spanish language track. i watched it repeatedly as a child too, it was the first video i ever owned and am thinking about buying it.
This version I saw at a matinee when I was less than 10 years old and it etched itself into my brain. I love the design of it and I wish I could find it on DVD
