Sullivan is certainly not the only composer of note to be represented in this score. There is certainly music from DON QUIXOTE by Minkus. Lanchbery also used music by Balfe and (I was told many years ago) music by Alfred Cellier from his Comic Opera DOROTHY. I haven't watched the full DVD for a long time but I am also tempted to list Rossini - but I may be getting confused with Lanchbery's LA FILLE MAL GARDEE here.
The Tale Of Pigling Bland.. Such a beautiful, mysterious, nostalgic title of a wonderful novel by the genius.. Beatrix Potter. This ballet is charming, romantic... wonderful. Exquisite. I am extremely passionate for ballets and this has to be one of the best. How Pigling Bland moves... tipper tapper, In a flamboyant and light manor. The tears of joy will spread down my cheeks, as i applaud this fabulous performance.
Music: "is an inspired blend of hitherto unheard period melodies discovered and transcribed by John Lanchberry from manuscripts in the British Museum" (from the back of the tape). Even in these difficult costumes, the footwork and epaulement is stunningly beautiful.
Charm, romance, musical beauty-I wish I saw Ashton more often. This is such a beautiful pas. Think of how many choreographers out there these days that cannot choreograph a pas. And, with all the challenges of a pig costume.
Thanks for that - I'd seen that on the record cover too, but I'm sure I heard that song once (an old musical hall one). the last line of the chorus is something like 'when the ...is gone'.
The book 'Tale of the tales' about making the ballet is worth reading too.
@fishyfish4444 Not quite undiscovered, as there is a selection from Sullivan's The Beauty Stone at 3:46, for about a minute. Perhaps little-heard would be a better description, as The Beauty Stone does get occasional performances, and there is a recording of in on the Prince Consort label.

I can't help you with the name of the music - but the woman dancing the Black Berkshire Pig is Brenda Last :)
