Why not take the Shinkansen??
It's only about 2 hours from Tokyo to Kyoto

Good point. We had one a 5day/5person ticket that we couldn't use on the bullet train. We carried on with normal train lines to Hiroshima but we took the Skinkansen on the way back to Tokyo (costing about £95) :D
