@simbasya Just got a chance to see this marvel of techology at the Intrepid Museum in New York City. Needles to say, my emotitions ran wild. What a beautiful bird. too bad I never was and never will be a part of the few elite ones that got a chance to fly that beautiful machine
@concorde15334 I love this plane but its pollution is so huge and it needs so much fuel that there's no reason to fligth it again. And no talking about the price of the tickets...
When I was on a working holiday in the UK in the early 90's, we use to live in a place called West Byfleet. It was right at the end of Terminal Fours runway. Us guys from overseas had never seen a Concorde before. I had a job working outside. Everytime one of the Concordes would fly over, we would just stand there in awe watching it. The sound was amazing. It use to shake the Caravan we lived in. I never got tired of looking at these beautiful aircraft. I wish now I had filmed it with a camera.
Concorde was way ahead of her time, and it was sad when she was retired, but a Concorde will never fly again. AF recently inspected the engines of one to hopefully start them and use it as a taxi demo only - but even that's not likely. The cost to test and re-fly one of these after 8+ years with no future support from Airbus is next to impossible. Both airlines flatly dismissed the idea of keeping one around at it's retirement for these reasons. A nice dream , but it just won't happen.
@Scorpion1054 then let's all go to bed and do something usefull like eyes wide shut or like 1984 movie an usefull INGSOC x-es,.. or skull or bones or new sun order
not many ppl no but there is still one concorde moth balled at heathrow for the 2012 games it will do a fly past on the opening day i was told this buy a guy at heathrow after getting lost on the prim road and passing it , it is visable on google earth and now resides in hanger ready to kick ass again
I love watching the Concorde videos but damn don't ruin it with the music SHIIIIITTT!!!! I hate that damn song, I would rather hear them sexy ass Rolls-Royce Turbojet engines.
tickets cost about 5,800 USD one way LHR-NYC or from Paris-NYC in 1999 (or perhaps over 10 grand if you checked at the wrong time) and for that you get to accelerate through mach 1.0 1290mph at 58,000 ft. with both reheats kicking. for yrs. thought to be so safe but what did it in is the impracticality, fuel consumption noise and the big crash...
i've seen countless tributes to concorde yet hardly any tributes to the people it killed in the air and on the ground. I think people don't respect the value of human life
@Patoupolice it wasnt the planes fault a piece of debris from a DC10 (continental air) that was on the run way, it sturck the plane as it was taking off from the runway and caused the back tyre to blow out and the debris went into the fuselage and into the fuel tank and the sparks ignited the fuel and caused the engine to set fire, concord ran for 27 years and this was its 1st and only crash, people can love this plane as its engineering genius.
@Patoupolice Why love Concorde? Because it was a symbol of speed, elegance, the jet set, but also international cooperation - and it wasn't designed to kill people, like an XB-70 or a Tu-160.
Apart from that it's a brilliant design technically, visually it's simply stunning.
Awww, poor thing. Seeing Concorde with her nose down makes her look all sad. Seeing that piece of history rot away in a museum, her sisters being scrapped... Never felt this much sympathy for a PLANE before... Poor Concorde... Here's to a tolerable retirement, and a faint scrap-er, fragment of hope that you'll get a second chance someday, Concorde! *clinks wine glass against nose cone*
@1979jondam no it was continental airlines that messed it up it was because of them the last concorde crashed due to a piece of tire that piece went into the fuel area and cause a hole..i was a concorde flyer many times and was very heart broken to see it go..
Most: Beautiful BIRD ever made for civillians! mach 2!!!. Hey U.S., THIS IS EUROPEAN, and LOUD but a nice.Ferrari of civilian airplains NEEDS A SPECIAL SOUND ;-). Anyway I miss this airplain, and with today's knowledge the sound would be at least be reduced to 50%..
Except the X-43 is a small unmanned vehicle, that required a booster rocket to accellerate it to a point that the scramjet would operate.
The X-15 however WAS manned & went mach 6.72 - Fastest manned aircraft, who's record still stands. - Allbeit in a tiny cramped cockpit, wearing a spacesuit.
However Concorde supercuised at mach 2+, for thousands of miles, carry 100 people in champagne sipping, comfort !!
what do you consider more valuable? people or machinery. You should really consider life more important. What did this aircraft do other than provide transport for people at high speeds? those people would still be alive if not for this pile of metal
...and those who don't learn from history, are doomed to repeat it-- to their (financial) detriment.
That said, Concorde isn't coming back. About the best chance that we have of a commercial SST any time remotely soon would be something like the Aerion Jet, and even then, I have my doubts of something like that coming to fruition... despite them seemingly taking orders for it already.
Well yeah, common sense would suggest that enough money can accomplish just about anything.
....just as it should also tell you that the chances of anyone/anything throwing the manner of money that would be required to make/keep even one Concorde airworthy again, are remote at best, and inconceivable in all likelihood-- particularly when factoring the nil probability of that individual or organization actually getting a desirable return on any such investment.
...small problem, where would this money come from?
If you TRULY had any insight into the company's position on SSC's retirement, then you'd know that the Alliance to Save Concorde (not to be confused with the moronic "Concorde Alliance") was a BA-backed effort to raise capital from everything ranging from banks, to heritage foundations, to MidEastern royalty, aimed at keeping G-BOAF airworthy for shows, etc... and yet it failed. So if not any of these sources, then where?
That said, here on planet Earth, we realize that this aircraft isn't returning to flight for you, for anyone you know, or any reason you can imagine. Regardless to whatever yarn of you working for BA is true or not-- the fact that you can't accept that fact speaks more about your grip on reality than any simple-minded names you choose to call me. Weak.
"whilst aircraft like the 777 and a340 have not had many accidents yet lets talk about their record 20 yrs down the road when they get near the end of their working lifes!!!!!"
...each time you make a statement like this, you do little more than broadcast your ignorance as to the workings of the aviation industry:
years mean essentially nothing to aircraft lifespans, cycles and RPMs/RPKs do. The worldwide 777 and A340 fleets have LONG since surpassed Concorde in terms of BOTH!
I think the main issue between leslie3232 and ImmortalSynn is that one is an american and one is British, so yeah the jelous one, i.e. ImmortalSynn is american and can't quite comprehend the fact that Great Britain and France CAN built a supersonic aircraft, when the "almighty we rule the world americans" cant (just for ImmortalSynn, that was sarcasm!)
Concorde was amazing, no doubt about it, and still way ahead of its time, even now! What a shame it has been lost now forever!
...actually, you're proving little more than the fact that assumption is the mother of all fuckups-- seeing as you assume me to BE American due only to the fact that I'm currently living there. Pathetic, but not surprising.
...that'd be interesting, considering that no 757 is certified to carry more than 279 passengers-- and that's assuming a single class offering with 28" pitch.
"why was concorde grounded over one accident??thats my point spud!!"
The answer is even more simple than the question:
because it had a known and relatively easily-invoked design fault which caused it to lose its CoA when proven fatal. Same reason the DC10 was grounded after AA191.
...which only means that you don't understand statistics at even the most basic level:
of course some planes have come down more often, because there's many more ~OF~ them.
If the worldwide historical 737 fleet (5,844 delivered) had Concorde's 0.05 fatal w/o rate, then we'd have lost 292 of the 737 in fatal crashes-- that obviously isn't the case, nowhere near it.
Then take into account aircraft like the 777 and A340: more than a thousand of them flying, and NEVER a fatal crash for either.
ImmortalSynn, there is a saying that states "statistics can be used to prove anything" This means that statistics can be munipulated to give a desired answer. If you look at the "statistics" Concorde was less safe than 777's, but what you actually have to look at is how many Concordes have there been flying over X number of years, and how many 777's are flying. "statistically" a 777 is safer because there are more of them and one crashing would only dent the safety level slightly.
And THIS proves that you lack the foggiest experience with statistical calculation concerning the aviation industry.
Aircraft safety (or for that matter, finances) isn't measured in number of aircraft, or even number of flights.... it's measured by a factor of RSM/RSKs.
Safety is measured by # of incidents or # of fatalities per Revenue Seat Mile... and by ANY measure of the above, Concorde has a FAR worse record (due to but a single crash) than the 777, A340, A330, 747, A32x, etc.
Thats as it may be, but as someone who has been taught statistics and mathematics to a high level, statistics ARE a fiddle, whether they are used in the aviation industry or elsewhere.
Statistics are so easily munipulated to prove a point, why do you think governments use them so frequently?!
If we want to get petty, Concordes only fatal crash was not actually caused by poor design or age, but by another plane dropping a strip of metal, take that into account and statistics are meaningless!
"Concordes only fatal crash was not actually caused by poor design"
WRONNGGGG.
...the ~exact~ reason for the 2000 CoA suspension was a (wait on it) ---DESIGN FAULT---. Or to be technical about it, SEVERAL design faults: ranging from engine placement/separation, to undercarriage wiring, to fuel tank integrity, to etc etc.
In that case, would you agree that had this strip of metal not been dropped and this accident not of occured Concorde would have been the safest aircraft flying?
There was certainly a strip of metal involed, and had that not been there these "design faults" may not have been discovered. Concorde had a CoA granted so must have been safe. CoA's do not take into account loose bits of metal on the runway!
We have gone backwards in aviation now we do not have a supersonic passenger aircraft!
Because Concorde's particular vulnerability to its design faults were WELL KNOWN (hello, F-BVFC's tires blew a hole completely THROUGH its wing, as far back as 1979!!!)... but as with most things in transport, only patchwork efforts to offset the issue in the short-term were applied, until of course lives were lost.
Again, same with the DC10... TWICE in fact, with that aircraft.
@ImmortalSynn Another jealous American bad mouthing our Concorde. Design faults or not, you can rest assured that Boeing could NEVER acheive anything as unique or beautiful as Concorde. Period...Did they ground Challenger when it blew its seals out???..same argument...Go figure...Hows that Yank?
*tisk*, a lot of piss-poor assumption and very little fact in your comment...
1) Boeing, Airbus, or even Tupolev (as history has proven) can do ANYTHING with a blank government check. When Boeing's was pulled, so was their project. Simple as that.
2) Rather tough to ground Challenger after it was destroyed, lol. If by chance you mean the space shuttle orbiter, then YES, they did.
3) Why are you so culturally ignorant as to assume all Americans to be "Yanks"?
@ImmortalSynn Really? I doubt that very much indeed. Concorde was years ahead of its time with RR Turbine technology and BAE...A bit like today really....:)So, they fixed the Orbiter problems..then it flew again..Why not Concorde? (current financial climate ignored of course). I have visited USA many times FYI too.
Who cares what you doubt, that doesn't change the reality of that situation.
Um, if you weren't paying attention: they "fixed" Concorde too, and she also flew again; so what do you mean "why not Concorde?" If you mean bring her back, that's because:
1) her CoA's been revoked, no one's going to pay to have it reinstated
2) there's no parts/spares/mtx regimen remaining to support her. The tools to create them no longer even exist!
@ImmortalSynn OK, who cares what you think??..WTF has Concorde got to do with the USA anyway?..Boeing tried and failed, so did the Russians as I recall...As for Concorde never flying again, you wouldnt like to bet on that eh?...Maybe not in service, but it WILL fly again one day.

"resource degregation"?
...um, the latter is not even a word.

...and those who don't learn from history, are doomed to repeat it-- to their (financial) detriment.
That said, Concorde isn't coming back. About the best chance that we have of a commercial SST any time remotely soon would be something like the Aerion Jet, and even then, I have my doubts of something like that coming to fruition... despite them seemingly taking orders for it already.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
Well yeah, common sense would suggest that enough money can accomplish just about anything.
....just as it should also tell you that the chances of anyone/anything throwing the manner of money that would be required to make/keep even one Concorde airworthy again, are remote at best, and inconceivable in all likelihood-- particularly when factoring the nil probability of that individual or organization actually getting a desirable return on any such investment.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
"only takes money!"
...small problem, where would this money come from?
If you TRULY had any insight into the company's position on SSC's retirement, then you'd know that the Alliance to Save Concorde (not to be confused with the moronic "Concorde Alliance") was a BA-backed effort to raise capital from everything ranging from banks, to heritage foundations, to MidEastern royalty, aimed at keeping G-BOAF airworthy for shows, etc... and yet it failed. So if not any of these sources, then where?
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
Right, and I'm Mork from planet Ork.

Try again.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
I think the main issue between leslie3232 and ImmortalSynn is that one is an american and one is British, so yeah the jelous one, i.e. ImmortalSynn is american and can't quite comprehend the fact that Great Britain and France CAN built a supersonic aircraft, when the "almighty we rule the world americans" cant (just for ImmortalSynn, that was sarcasm!)
Concorde was amazing, no doubt about it, and still way ahead of its time, even now! What a shame it has been lost now forever!
concept2 3 years ago
...actually, you're proving little more than the fact that assumption is the mother of all fuckups-- seeing as you assume me to BE American due only to the fact that I'm currently living there. Pathetic, but not surprising.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
"a 757 downed loses 4-500 ppl"
...that'd be interesting, considering that no 757 is certified to carry more than 279 passengers-- and that's assuming a single class offering with 28" pitch.
"why was concorde grounded over one accident??thats my point spud!!"
The answer is even more simple than the question:
because it had a known and relatively easily-invoked design fault which caused it to lose its CoA when proven fatal. Same reason the DC10 was grounded after AA191.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
...which only means that you don't understand statistics at even the most basic level:
of course some planes have come down more often, because there's many more ~OF~ them.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
ImmortalSynn, there is a saying that states "statistics can be used to prove anything" This means that statistics can be munipulated to give a desired answer. If you look at the "statistics" Concorde was less safe than 777's, but what you actually have to look at is how many Concordes have there been flying over X number of years, and how many 777's are flying. "statistically" a 777 is safer because there are more of them and one crashing would only dent the safety level slightly.
concept2 3 years ago
And THIS proves that you lack the foggiest experience with statistical calculation concerning the aviation industry.
Aircraft safety (or for that matter, finances) isn't measured in number of aircraft, or even number of flights.... it's measured by a factor of RSM/RSKs.
Safety is measured by # of incidents or # of fatalities per Revenue Seat Mile... and by ANY measure of the above, Concorde has a FAR worse record (due to but a single crash) than the 777, A340, A330, 747, A32x, etc.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
Thats as it may be, but as someone who has been taught statistics and mathematics to a high level, statistics ARE a fiddle, whether they are used in the aviation industry or elsewhere.
Statistics are so easily munipulated to prove a point, why do you think governments use them so frequently?!
If we want to get petty, Concordes only fatal crash was not actually caused by poor design or age, but by another plane dropping a strip of metal, take that into account and statistics are meaningless!
concept2 3 years ago
"Concordes only fatal crash was not actually caused by poor design"
WRONNGGGG.
...the ~exact~ reason for the 2000 CoA suspension was a (wait on it) ---DESIGN FAULT---. Or to be technical about it, SEVERAL design faults: ranging from engine placement/separation, to undercarriage wiring, to fuel tank integrity, to etc etc.
Same with the DC10 when its CoA was pulled.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
In that case, would you agree that had this strip of metal not been dropped and this accident not of occured Concorde would have been the safest aircraft flying?
There was certainly a strip of metal involed, and had that not been there these "design faults" may not have been discovered. Concorde had a CoA granted so must have been safe. CoA's do not take into account loose bits of metal on the runway!
We have gone backwards in aviation now we do not have a supersonic passenger aircraft!
concept2 3 years ago
No, I wouldn't.
Such is the "Tombstone Mentality".
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
@ImmortalSynn Another jealous American bad mouthing our Concorde. Design faults or not, you can rest assured that Boeing could NEVER acheive anything as unique or beautiful as Concorde. Period...Did they ground Challenger when it blew its seals out???..same argument...Go figure...Hows that Yank?
EnglishTurbines 1 year ago
@EnglishTurbines
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago

3) who's going to insure her in this climate?
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn OK, who cares what you think??..WTF has Concorde got to do with the USA anyway?..Boeing tried and failed, so did the Russians as I recall...As for Concorde never flying again, you wouldnt like to bet on that eh?...Maybe not in service, but it WILL fly again one day.

"WTF has Concorde got to do with the USA anyway?"
Nil, which is why I'm wondering why you keep bringing the USA into this, lol
"so did the Russians as I recall"
Hate to break this to you, but they were the FIRST to fly a supersonic passenger jet
"you wouldnt like to bet on that eh?"
Are you kidding, I'd take that bet ANY day!
Again, who's going to pay the ENORMOUS cost to get her recertified, insured,
