  • I have seen bigger ships docked much closer together here in the port. Sometimes there is only 2 meter between these big 300 meter long ships. BTW I'm not surprised it had something to do with some Ginga ship, they are possibly the most arrogant, difficult, annoying, dumb people to find on any ship!

  • Don't see no near miss!!!! thats how it is supposed to be done!!

  • Always amazed me how they manuver these ships so perfectly. Love watching the docking when I'm on a cruise ship.

  • A near miss is a hit. I didn't see a hit here. Fail?

  • obviously not a woman driver.

  • and for my next TRICK.............

  • Row row row your Ship...LOL

  • verry good officer, manouvering with his anchor (y)

  • Love the two people down at the waters edge: "Thats ships coming straight for us..."

"It certainly is Reg, lets wait and see whether he makes it or not..."

  • @Batters56 they just think its going slow so no real danger..what they dont know is that something huge like that will go slow through water and through LAND aswell

  • Wooooo!!! That did look kinda scary :)

  • @ARESJMG notice in my very first post I stated "not benign" in response to an earlier comment stating it looked benign and normal as if the ship was docking without any problems. To me this was always a near miss situation!!!

  • @ARESJMG I agree it is a near miss!! Where did I say this ship is docking or doing otherwise than trying its best to avoid colliding with the shore??

  • thats not a near miss... its called being a badass of a captain

  • @SurfsUpFlorida smells more lika a chief engineer fuckup to me

  • can park a ship but i bet he has trouble with hs car

  • and that's how you parallel park!

  • WHAT NEAR MISS?? you have to pull up to the dock to get off? HOW SLOW do you want them to do it?

  • can someone please explain what fog has to do with anything, 70 yrs after the invention of radar???

  • you drop the wrong anchor

  • It's dangerous to text and drive!!

  • not to many captains try maneuvering with the anchor down and its working against the truster

  • I have a question for all the people who wrote here that the ship is maneuvering in order to dock: To dock WHERE?!? Do you realize that there is only the sea front promenade? Why would an container vessel captain want to dock alongside on the sea front promenade? To organize ship visits for tourists???? Look carefully at the pier. There is no terminal instalation there. The ship is NOT docking at all. The clip's info is real and verified.

  • Muy interesante

  • ???

  • The ship drop anchor to stop look at right side

  • Net gemist?

wat een gelul dat schip is aan het afmeren.

  • You idiots... the ship was avoiding an accident! Ships never let there anchors down when docking! My uncle is the Captain of Oasis of the Seas and he told me all about it.

  • @hello1233280 That is actually untrue. I am a Harbour Pilot and we use anchors to assist in bringing ships safely alongside all the time when we do not have tugs to assist or adequate tugs/power for the job.

This ship may have been avoiding an accident I agree, but what you are saying is untrue.

Maybe on the Oasis of the Seas as she is a big cruise ship with Bow and stern thrusters with azipod propulsion anchors will only be used in an emergency but not on conventional cargo ships/Tankers etc.

  • @rootsman1971 I hear you mate, but how many times have you dropped portside anchor when you are puttnig portside alongside ?

Also I can´t see the terminal.... Maybe its there but I can´t see it.

  • @cruisemate You would never drop a portside anchor to go port side alongside. This is an emergency and probably it was the only anchor cleared for letting go immediately. We are seeing it from a front view and that ship was probably 25 metres from hitting the land, on the bridge this would have looked like 0 metres. The idea would be to stop the ship at all costs. They were backing up hard and the anchor was just another precaution and would look a lot better in the report if they collided.

  • @hello1233280 your uncle is the Captain? So what are you the towel boy? ROFLMAO!!!!!

  • @Sodiumreactor No. Simply no.

  • I would of liked to be one of those people on the road watchin that big fuker come close like that!!! lol

  • I have seen ships use this kind of manuver al lot in Houston Tx. If there was a near miss you should ahve shown the other boat too.

  • you mean a near-hit...

  • Cool vid but the description is incorrect

  • They dropped the anchor... a sign they were in doubt.

  • if that was a general situation there should be at least one tug from aft. We can see only the final stoppage with help of anchor (see the chain isn't tight at the time was video recorded). Not like on my case in singapore anchorage ))))))

  • excellent ship handling by pilot, noted anchor being dropped second viewing.

  • thats as near as a collision that i would want, dont remember seeing the use of the port anchor being mentioned in captains handbook-under the heading-LETS DOCK AT SAFELY-that vessel is going to fast to safely dock-THATS WHY HES GOT THE THING IN REVERSE-ITS GOT BOW THRUSTER ON FULL-AND THE ANCHOR DEPLOYED...ITS A LOT OF WEIGHT TO STOP,AND NO BRAKE PEDAL

  • dude smoke dosnt have 2 do any thin with that shit, jst a normal tight turn

  • @awardklik Just as other people mentioned, anchor is dragging, bow thruster is on full power.

And main engine full astern, thats why the engine is producing so much smoke.

I wouldn't call that safe manoeuvering, or a tight turn. I call that a near miss!

Shut up if you dont know what you are talking about!

  • nice save

  • no, look how much smoke the ship is putting out... you wouldnt been to be pushing that much smoke out if you were coming in for a tight turn

  • skills ,good captain.

  • its not nearly miss... i think captain did a good job there. He stopped nicely

  • captan Ron style.

  • Anchor was Dropped quickly....to manuever the ship by the used of bow thruster or rudder....

    ship handling is not easy...

    ^_^

  • it was a near miss, the veronica had just avoided a colission with another vessel and ended up in inner harbour

  • if you dummys look closer he dropped achor in a emergency to stop was a near miss of hitting land....

  • for me that ship is not just turning to right side- starboard side they have drop their anchor at port side and used the port side bow trusters to turn hard to star board their ship they just do that manuver to dock ass wt u see their is no port at all so wt's the point to "duck" they just do that manuver to avoid collision... because at that distance from the land it is to dagerus and risky to do manuver that vessel and it is just a seconds or maybe a blink of an eye to a acident.

  • HARD TO STARBOARD!!!!BOW THRUSTERS ON!!!!!

  • you lot blind!!!! it's dragging an anchor to try and slow down! How many ships do you see dragging anchors around when docking normaly.

  • @sleejen none 2 things could have happen 1. he came in too fast. or 2 he lost control on a sys

  • this isn't a near miss. if anything, it's a near hit. it didn't nearly miss it, it completely missed it. so it can't be a near miss. however since it almost hit it, it would be a near hit.

  • for one hes got his bowthruster on for the turn number two this ship probally makes this turn every week its normal i dont see a near miss if there was a near miss he would be in full reverse and water would be churning forward of the stern ?

  • They don't dock like that inside the harbour, believe me, I live just opposite and I saw everything, that was real, they lost control of the ship, they missed us by a few metres............

  • SOOOO you mean NEAR HIT not NEAR MISS

  • Text book berth. No luck involved here. Hats off to the pilot.

  • You dont approach a dock like that, unless u r high!!

  • You dont dock a ship like that head on with only 50 meters to go! Of course its a mistake.

  • power parking

  • also notice that the anchor was dragging to help slow the big fella down...wooooah

  • Lucky basstard :)

  • I don't think any of you can imagine what a big deal this shiphandling actually was!

  • " Oh You said reverse thrusters"

  • Should have been impacted in case if not equipped with thusters.

  • I can do that with my private ship

  • Yeah shidheads....anchoring at full speed!...great

  • i agree with SirWyx, looks like a controlled parking job

  • the title is wrong..this is not a miss..thats the way things has to be done to anchor the vassel

  • @SirWyx Then you know shit about ships!

Only make a opinion when you know something about it retard.

A ship weighs a phew thousand tonnes, so it is difficult to stop. It succeeded to fully stop only a phew metres before the boulevard. And it got there biceaus she had to evade a other ship.

  • nub pilot

  • like a glove. miss it by an inch miss it by a mile

  • wow! fuck'n A dude,

  • I have work many time in this ship.....in the port of Leghorn....

    It's a very old boat!!!!

  • I worked for Chef Hans, who worked on a German Freighter. He said that he saw a cable snap on a major ship, and slice a fishing boat in half...The two guys were at either end, but muddied up the water a bit.

  • Yep, I would have turned 50 metres out, not 10 =), anyway good vid

  • that was just good parking, he has got to get in sum how

  • In Vancouver, BC the amount of pollution from the poorly maintained ships dumps tonnes of crap into the air and it is also affectign water quality as well. They worry about planes, but I have heard nothing about pollution abatement in shipping...

  • Obviously you haven't heard of MARPOL. Check it out

  • Well, many of the vessels have seen beached or belching out crap were not well maintained. I won't name all nationalities, but Liberian comes up a lot. Vancouver is gettign hit hard by freighters and container ships that are below par, and soon we are to let them through the pristine waters of the NW and NE Passage? Scares me.

  • i 2nd that, i won't go anywhere in the water on our beaches

  • that was a near hit

  • out fenders

  • Im a captain,

    drop port anchour

    full astern

    full port rudder( tranverse thrust)

and full bow thruster .....ONLY AFTER THE SHIP IS BELOW THE SLOWIST SPEED POSSIBLE TO MANTAIN STEERAGE... bow thruster don't do shit abow that speed, they blow bubbles...

still suck to be that captain,

  • Hm why wud they be dropping port anchor if turning to starboard?

  • To slow the friggin' ship down to buy him time to manouver!

  • If you notice, when the anchor was dredgeing, the aft of the the ship swung around and the inverse thrusterss kept it form hitting the quay, dock.... Nerves of steel I must say....

  • it's no that easy, it takes a ton of time and distance to stop a ship that big.

  • All right captain, you rock! :)

  • I think as George Carlin once put it, they need to rename the term, near-miss. If you nearly miss something, that means you almost missed it and actually hit it. It should be called and near hit because you almost nearly hit it. Am I the only one that see's this? Oh well.....

  • lol.

    never thought of that.

  • very well said, a near-hit it is!

  • As s skipper myself. These dangerous things happen. Very close call for this guy. A mega tonnage ship heading for collision is never pretty when it does.

    Lucky capitan!

  • 1 the fog wasnt that bad and i worked on a ship so i know these things

    2 it was probly moringing

and 3 if it almost crashed u would heare the muster drill!

that was not a near miss

  • Is was most definately an evasive manoeuvre..

Basically a vessel caused one vessel to take evasive action and that vessel cause Veronica B to take evasive action..

Bit of a mess actually but all ended well thank God.

  • This is perfect ship handling skills by a captain

  • i agree steve

  • It looks to me like this ship is just turning in tight quarters getting ready to dock. There isn't a near miss of anything.

  • On first view i thought that too.

but then looking at it again you can see the port anchor being paid out.

no way you will do that if you are going for a routine port side berthing

  • Yeah.. if turning to stbd why drop port anchor? even if it is being payed out it will give some resistance

  • Also, you can't possibly drop the port anchor and then go port side alongside.

So, it was clearly an emergency manouevre.

  • @azsteve07 yeh thats what it looks like to mee to

  • Thet was probabli coment by indian for hum when they frt they write near miss.

  • @azsteve07 firmly agreed.

  • @azsteve07 They are dropping the anchor, you don't do that in such a situation unless you're in trouble.

  • @langhammars Correct sir,

  • @azsteve07 how there was no near miss, you can see that they try to stop ship by droping portside anchor

  • @azsteve07 Take another closer look! The anchor was dropped to help with trying to stop her!

  • @azsteve07 If it was just turning they wouldnt have the anchor down. They would have used tugs to turn them.

  • @azsteve07 The anchor was dropped, ships do not drop anchor when attempting to dock.

  • @azsteve07 why did they drop their port anchor as they are turning to starboard? with turning they increase their room to stop and meanwhile increase the decalleration. that is definitely a near miss... and a very close one

  • @azsteve07 there is no dock.

  • There is nothing wrong here friends. He doesn't even engage his bow thruster to push the bow to stb until 36 seconds.

  • That is incorrect. The bow thruster is actually working from the first second of the video. If you look you will see the wake from the thruster running down the side of the ship. What made you think so was at 36 secs the ship has actually stopped moving forward and then the thrust becomes more effective.

  • I aggree! ;)

  • @rootsman1971 and if you look close you will see they also dropped the achor, that's also a panic reaction.

I am a seaman and this video is used in a lot of warning video's, sow this is nog just for turning!!!

  • looks benign to me; a ship turning in tight quarters, if there was a problem one would expect to see prop wash travelling toward the bow (astern) and the second anchor let go

  • Not benign. Prop wash will only travel up ship toward bow when the ship has stopped and begins to make stern way. Not the case here!!

The stbd anchor was probably not ready to let go, hence they used the port. Anchor's take time to prepare for letting go, and it probably was not prepared!!

  • he's lucky he had deep water & his anchor chain didnt snap.

  • I saw similar situation in bosphorus, a russian ship was dredging anchor to stop the vessel who was heading toward houses

  • some toilet paper required for the captain i think

  • and especially the pilot after he's been chewed out by the captain for endangering his ship!

  • there is no pilot on board this vessel !!!!!

this was all the captains own doing.

he took evasive action to avoid a collision with another ship

  • I've sailed all over the world but oddly enough never into Gib - it looks like it maybe needs pilotage. This shows that big ships move slowly but things can go wrong very quickly. Thanks for posting it.

  • normally all vessels have pilot on board but this ship was not coming to gibraltar she was heading for algeceres(spain)but avoiding the other ship caused her to enter gib harbour
