The men maybe veterans but the uniforms they wear are on the whole reproductions made for the photographs, which were taken in 1858 with the inaugoration of the Medaille de Saint Helene
@VRIESSS Oh yes. The Uniform worn by the Engineer soldier is Second Empire; the cut of the lapels, the epaulettes, the sword and sword belt; dtto the "Red" Lancer. The two Grenadiers a Pied wear Second Empire bearskins. If you look at the shape of some of the Hussar colpacks they are also Second Empire from their shape.
@VRIESSS I am currently going through the photographs image by image to ascertain what might be first empire and what is second empire and what is dubious reconstruction, such as the habit worn by the dragoon. Unitl recently a lot what was on display in the Musee de l'Armee was fakery: of the manaquin of the officer of Young Guard only the waist belt was genuine and only the Helmet and Habit for the Engineer of the Guard!
@janeknr2 personally i rode "La vie militaire sous le Premier Empire" (military life during the first french empire) by Elzear Blaze, a former french officer during napoleonic wars. I don't know if it's translated in english but it was a great book.
Brilliant. Just the other day I was thinking it's a pity photography was invented only a bit too late to have captured soldiers of the Napoleonic era. Pictures of real veterans in their uniforms is a nice consolation price :-) Thanks for the upload. I just finished reading the diary of a Flemish soldier who was forced to join the 3rd chasseurs (cavalry reg.) when Belgium was occupied by Napoleon entitled "Soldier of Napoleon". Indeed, the stories this man wrote down, fascinating.
Superb photos.. they capture an emotion of the time..imagine them as young men using those swords..photos must be between 1830-50's,maybe an anniversary..would be nice to see the colours of the uniforms, especially the hussars..nice one
i think the dates are wrong... if it where from 1815 napoleon should have a picture... but all day died in 1815? that is kinda impossible... i think this picture it was very far away from 1815... like maybe... 1850 and 1880 this time is possible to have pictures... but i don't think they got pictures from 1815... napoleon lost the war in 1815... you guys need to fix that i think...
@oOAndrewsOo the photos were takin in the 1850s when the people were 70 or 80. that means they were born in 1780 or 1790s. just like people from the civil war were around in the 1930s.
@VRIESSS Really? Wow ... that would have been something. In 1901 when Lincoln's casket was last opened and seen they said that he was still very much visable and recognizable. Its too bad some pictures of the event and body were not taken as a memorial or tribute.
wonderful to see the old veterens with their beautiful uniforms.I wish they were interviewed and their stories recorded as well.Thank you for posting these.
There is a book written by Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian "Histoire d’un conscrit de 1813" published in 1864. They had interviewed veterans and this book is obviously one of the most authentic novels about the napoloeonic wars (but of course there are also records of eye-whitnesses! Just search in googlebooks!)
thats ridiculous, for their time they were not short. that's like saying in 300 years when everyone is 6,6 f people will say men in the 2000s wore skinny jeans to make them look tall and lanky
@menacinghat bored? I left that comment 5 months ago. and yes it is a proven fact that Victorians where shorter people then us. and yes 100 years from now I will be considered short. :-)
@SlingBlade79 It all depends on how our environment mixes with our internal body chemistry. There is a tipping point where size no longer benefits a creature. Its funny that the "Napoleon Complex" is used with such regularity when at the time a man his size (approx 5'5") would be no more than an inch short of average, if that. I am 6'1" in a country where the average male height is 5'8 1/2". It has more to do with the climate then we think, I believe.
Real pictures of Napoleon's soldiers from the First French Empire. Photos were taken during the Second French Empire (1852-1870) so the soldiers were about 70/80 years old.
Napoleon III decided to reward the soldiers of the First Empire and offered to them the medal of Saint-Helena.
Whether these were Napolean's soldiers or not, these pics were taken way after the era claimed. These old guys were problally soldiers in their youth, but taken years later. After being retired from service, they probally wore their uniforms for the camera type of thing. Perhaps a cameraman at a Napolean get-together of retired soldiers years later, or something.
This is amazing lol but i live in Twickenham ,Middlesex ,London and in our local museum there is a photograph that was taken of my area in 1815 and that is the oldest photograph that i know of in Twickenham :) But this is wonderfull how all this was soo new to them 100 odd yrs ago :P xx
@BRC98 Actually, the first permanent photo was taken in 1826 so it is only 185 years old. if you read about the history of photography you will learn that they could make images on light sensitive paper many years before that but they could not fix them, ie make them permanent. the unique thing about 1826 is that is when they were able to permanently fix the image for the first time, thus creating the world's first photograph. thus i would say the first photo is considered to date from 1826.
Are you sure these are real? I mean the quality, not considering the color, is amazing for being that old. It's better than my iPhone 4 pics :S has no noise or anything whatsoever.
@Supduplemup I'm not a specialist but i'm almost sure that all of these uniforms were used during 1800-1815 because the Second Empire's uniforms are completely different (no high shako etc.).
People didn't get as fat back then. How many 60 year old men today can boast they fit into the suit they wore at their high school prom? These men would have been around 18 at the time of the Battle of Waterloo.
I dont understand the dates for those photos. According with the historical archives the first photograph was taken in 1828. But there are pictures from 1815?? What is the meaning for the dates that are shown on the photos??

@pedro1716 yeah so all the vets had to be dead before 1826, no one was meant to survive to be photographed. so ur right u have deduced & solved this case, I like how u were able to fabricate a load of shite to find a flaw with dates lol.so veterans of the Great War (WW1) are not photographed today, right? twit
