The meeting was pro forma. In truth, the town hall meeting was but a means of Obama asserting the federal govt. position on, and continued prosecution of, the war on drugs and the right of the individual to ingest. It is that simple.

The War on Drugs is no laughing matter and it was very disrespectful of the President to frame and dismiss the question in the manner he did. Everyday lives are ruined by the War on Drugs and it is mainly due to Law Enforcement or Government Agency actions more-so than any society harm derived from the drugs themselves.

Yeah, this country spends hardly any money at all on jails/prisons for marijuana offenders. We spend no money on enforcing the laws. I doubt we spend much for those uncountable helicopters, right? The lost productivity of people jailed for pot? Oh, and if we taxed it we would make no money, right? Actually if you read Dr. Mirons book Drug "War Crimes: The Consequences of Prohibition", you will learn about the research that this Harvard economics professor that shows 77 Billion dollars per year will be the yearly financial benefit of legalizing marijuana.

I wrote a paper on this very topic some years ago. While, yes, it's generally agreed that the yearly savings + revenue from legalizing and taxing marijuana is somewhere in the range of tens of billions, that still doesn't address massive unemployment, trillion dollar budget deficits, weakening currency, massive trade deficit, etc. I understand that it's important that marijuana be legalized, but the idea that it's even in the picture when it comes to the economy is laughable.

The idea that there would be mass unemployment if prohibition was ended, is the same idea that if we end the war in Iraq, we will lose a lot of jobs...

The thing with ending prohibition, is that jobs will be created in the hemp, medical MJ, and recreational industries.

It is known that legalization doesn't make usage go up. It just makes crime, and black market activities go DOWN.

Prohibition didn't work in the 20's and 30's, and it doesn't work now.

State governments bear the brunt of the cost of the drug war and they are in a crisis right now trying to balance their budgets. They can't just go into massive debt or print money like the federal government or the federal reserve. Now is the time to take inventories of our priorities as a society and continuing the expensive and failing drug war should be at the bottom of the list. State governments provide vital services and can no longer be bogged down with this massive waste.
