putting up a good motor in it seem...well lets say oil and water dosnt mix well. they should put a hybird electric motor instead.

These corollas are slow. they are in the class of the 04 civic si. There is a video on here that motorweek tested the 05 xrs running 16.1. Plus the xrs only has rear drum brakes. @ehcivicracer My 05 XRS has disk brakes all around. MW trap speed in that vid was like 88 mph. stock xrs's should be running low 90s traps. XRS would benefit from lowering lift down to like the Celica. Lift in a rolla XRS hits at 6700 while the GTS hits at 6000. Thats the major difference and is why they are slower than a GTS that doesn't fall out of lift after upshifts. thats why ppl get the PFC for lift control. there are stock XRS's running 15s around here on youtube.
I have a 2005 xrs corolla, I only have a cold air intake, but I want to buy headers, chip, underdrive pulley, exhaust, wats a good website to check. Thanks
his lift kicks in at 6800rpm, you cant keep lift through the gears..though there are versions with lift at 6000/6200rpm you can keep these ones in lift.
Im surprised... thought those corollas were slow... doesnt look too slow to me.. some bolt ons...and tuning... i suppose that thing can be pretty damn fast.
gear ratios arnt right, they drop to far you can hear after the shit that 800 rpm after the shift the lift kicks in, so you get that point where sweet fall happens for a second, they are great engine, but they need to sort out the gears, pretty poor development to not get that right.
same with the auto celica, they just had a normal auto behind it, so it would never launch, you would plant your foot, then wait 10 seconds till 1st gear got to 6800rpm, then you would get moving
Have you ever driven this car around town? You practically never have to downshift, and you are in 6th gear by about 42 mph, and are WELL above 3000 on the interstate. It is not terribly easy to make a car have close gearing at or above 8000 RPMs and still make it practical for city driving; you'd have to be shifting every 5 mph if the gearing was optimal for the tiny lift powerband.
Cliffs: lift engagement/powerband, not gearing, is the problem, trust me.
@benr360063 Jees man what a blast from the past I watched this a year ago lol. I have driven these cars manual and auto's, I worked for Toyota. I am not denying they are still drivable, but what i am saying is look at the gears every time he shifts, it goes from 8200 (peak revs, limiter is 8500 or 8700 i forget) he shifts well I might add good clean changes, it drops to 5800, that means for certain time its just not on its cams till 6800 if they were little closer ud get heaps betR acceleration
Respond to this video... much better 0-60, 0-100 it would be probably 2/10ths quicker to 100, and 60
again I love these cars, they look great for a celica, I just wish they were RWD that would be awesome, they have the chassis, suspension/ engine and looks for it, just a Front wheel drive, and slightly mis matched gear ratios, thats all id fix and it would be car of the year for its year in production
yeesh, people. you're bashing on toyota saying there's a "racing engine" in a "grocery getter" and you're dumb enough to think that your civic is any different? moreover, you think that toyota's copy-catting honda? yeah, right. what about porsche? mitsubishi? nissan? nissan had the first production car with variable valve timing! don't get butthurt just because toyota jumped on the bandwagon.
toyota does it just as good and honda didn't do it first. get over it.
i was referring to the civic as a grocery getter with a racing engine. that toyota engine is not a racing engine. 9.8 compression ratio. 2.4 Liter engine. you may make all the claims about your valve technology but it hasn't taken names like VTEC and never will. 2.4liters? and you have to run good to match up with a B16A plus in a light scion. your engine tech needs help. that's what i mean by it's not VTEC.
Yeah the celica is a 2zz-fe where the supra has a 2jz motor...the actual name of the supra is the celica supra, technically if you want a cheaper supra, go with the N/A version (non turbo version). Also, you were talking about VVT-i earlier and not VVT-Li. Lift is stronger than vtec and kicks in earlier than vtec does. MIVEC is on par with vtec, maybe a little stronger.
technically the last Celica Supra was the 1982 , after that year Supra became a separate car from the Celica. if you were to connect what car came from what other car , then all toyota cars are derived from the 70's Crown. then the Corona,Cressida,Corolla, Celica, Celica Supra. and Supra. All these cars are connected like brothers and sisters , just like the Corolla , then Corolla Tercel , then Tercel. And you are right VVTLi is stronger than VTEC. .
mmm thats all true. Which comment of mine were you replying to? Lol every toyota is a sister/brother/cousin in some way shape or form. I'm doing extensive research on it for a class I'm taking at school.
then you're gona like the fact that the engine used in the XRS and the Celica GTS its its a "Yamaha engine" because the head its designed by Yamaha, this is not the first time a "Yamaha engine" found its way in a Celica. In the 1976-1977 Celica, the Liftback was released with the 18R-G Twincam engine(except US) with a Yamaha head and running gear, equipped with twin Mikuni-Solex Carburetors. This engine produced significantly more power than the 18R-C. Peak power was about 134 hp @ 6000 rpm.
Yeah I already knew that Yamaha made these engines. They are also found in the MR-2, and I believe it was the 3S-GTE engine that introduced LIFT into Toyota's engines. The 3S-GTE was then replaced by the 2zz later on. Lol trust me I know. But its interesting that they used twin Carbs on the 76-77 Celica.
Another technical feature that came as a result of Toyota looking for performance improvements with out sacrificing low-end streetablity was the use of a variable induction system. The Toyota Variable Induction System (TVIS) boosts torque output across the rpm range and is calibrated to react to driving conditions. Its introduction coincided with the 4A-G. This was available in the 1985 Corollas GTS and the MR2(US)
The Toyota VVT-i system replaces the Toyota VVT offered starting in 1991 on the 5-valve per cylinder 4A-GE engine.
VVT-i, introduced in 1996, varies the timing of the intake valves by adjusting the relationship between the camshaft drive (belt, scissor-gear or chain) and intake camshaft. Engine oil pressure is applied to an actuator to adjust the camshaft position. It improved engine efficiency. Variants of the system, including VVTL-i, Dual VVT-i, VVT-iE, and Valvematic, have followed.
In 1998, Dual VVT-i which adjusts timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts was first introduced on the RS200 Altezza's 3S-GE engine. And now VVTLi The system was first used in (Japan)1999 Toyota Celica SS-II with 2ZZ-GE.Toyota has now ceased production of its VVTL-i engines for most markets , because the engine does not meet Euro IV specifications for emissions.
this engine has been discontinued on some Toyota models, including that of the Corolla T-Sport (Europe), Corolla Sportivo (Australia), Celica, Corolla XRS, Toyota Matrix XRS, and the Pontiac Vibe GT, all of which had the 2ZZ-GE engine fitted. The Lotus Elise continues to offer the 2ZZ-GE and the 1ZZ-FE engine, while the Exige offers the engine with a supercharger. Now all i gotta do is find a 2003 XRS . Good luck with your report. Hope this was of any help. Peace out.
I agree MIVEC, VTEC,VVTI all their doing is increasing efficiency and going with the flow....I just love toyotas because I grew up with them and not many people mod` them heavily such as Hondas. I am a proud owner of a 2000 CE 1zzfe vvti and loving it.
In my opinion MIVEC, V-tech, and VVTI arent so much for efficiency,as much as they are a kind of a compromise. For instants,IN TERMS OF CAMS,(which is wat valve timing essentially is)A 2.0L 4 cyld. with a more efficiently minded cam will have a low power output, but extremelly good fuel efficiently! And the complete opposite goes for a performance cams.VVTI attempts at both!More than anything a marketing scheme tho. think about it 2.0L 210hp,and 21mpg(k20z1). But u only get the power at 7800rpm.
well in truth Vtec was the first of its kind... and when it was first lauched it was truly more performance oriented, in order to get more power without more dispacement... take the D16a1 1.6L with 158bhp. Nowadays performance oriented still have a true vtec, but other such as the cr-v, pilot, etc. Have the I-vtec that is more for efficiency with that compromise i spoke of. All manufactures forms of valve lift are similar. But i'd still buy a Honda if i trylly want performance, tho...
i want to see a dyno graph. if valve lift starts out late then before lift it only makes 120hp. then after lift it makes 164hp. lift is nothing if it is late.
damn it kicks at 7 grand? As soon as you get to enjoy the changover, you gotta shift to the next gear. I'll keep to vtec. More agressive changover anyways.
vvtl-i is not comparable to vtec. toyota owners will try to sell you that. the potent 2.4 liter camry engine (only enginethey have right now) is great but low end torque and power. VTEC covers you on both bottom and top end. toyota can pretend to redline to8krpm but doing nothing there LOL.
lol and he was rolling at 10mph already. but it wasn't a 60 dash though. he was trying to hint at "lift" as if creating a new trend LOL.sorry to walk into the toyota saloon. will get thumbs down for days LMAO but oh well. show me a 2jz and i'll walk home ;)
The "S" model is just cosmetic model trim to give that look of being sporty but it has the base engine in it. THe XRS is cosmetic as well as performance to back it up (for a Corolla).
that's good it's your opinion for it's not a longer lasting car. a nice car yes but it's not a vtec. study the vtec engineering and look at what you have. there's 16years+ in the VTEC world chief and it covers all frames. a racing spec engine in a grocery getter. but have a good day though
ok morron garbage toyota copied Honda if you know any thing thats why i said vtec u retard understand things befor you replie to them HONDA = VTEC TOYOTA = VVT-li
It is a TOYOTA Video! why In the hell would you say Can you say vtec? And Toyota did not "copy" Honda They used the same idea but if you look @ how the motors are put together you would see that they are 2 completely different beast. Just lust like anything else in the world, It has been brought up from someone else, Honda did come out with the idea, I will give you that much.
i used to have a toyota i had a 05 camry with the ground effects and bbs rims it wasnt vvt-li just vvti no lift or wanna be vtec i did used to pertend i had vtec by turing off the ac and go full throtle ...lol
hmm..i wonder why it the vartiable valve cross over is so diff from a honda...i wonder if you had a controller..like the vtec one..would it engage like a honda..iono..but shit is pretty sick
It doesn't take a genius to realize that no car gets good fuel efficiency passed 3000 rpm, but realistically how often do you really go above 3000 rpm? The only people who consistently drive in the 3000+ range are stupid little teens who just got their licenses and had rich mommy and daddy buy them a car to plow into a tree on prom night.
Corolla XRS is an overpriced underperforming car. Civic SI would eat it alive. It also won't get good gas mileage when you're in lift. I'd rather have a car with a V6. Better yet, a turbo 4 banger.
How retarded. The new civic SI has 30 more HP, but weighs about 500 lbs more. The Hondas are getting heavier and heavier and drifting far from their sportscar roots. The XRS isa true enthusiast car, it even has a cable throttle, not a lame drive by wire like the civic SI. It also isn't ricer/copbait so a lot less bullshit to deal with.
Wow check out the big brain on Whoitbe52. Way to state the obvious; did it take you all night to figure that out? The lift is what makes it an XRS as opposed to a Corolla S.
I would rather have a 4 cyl lift engine instead of a 6 cyl regular engine. The XRS allows you to get great MPG driving around like normal when you dont need all 170 HP.
^^ yes. But lift still kicks in at 6500. Basically its the same as the other corollas with lift, higher gearing, higher reving motor. Basically a rolla S with these added on.
when does the lift kick in? at around 3500? I heard that it usually kicks in at around 6500 but I don't see anything happening at 6500, someone please clarify for me. thanks.

vvtl-i is vvt-i plus lift. it uses two sets of lobes and there is a point where it switches between the two (aka a step).
go ahead and flame me. don't beleive me? look it up.

bhargav1 4 years ago
lol and he was rolling at 10mph already. but it wasn't a 60 dash though. he was trying to hint at "lift" as if creating a new trend LOL.sorry to walk into the toyota saloon. will get thumbs down for days LMAO but oh well. show me a 2jz and i'll walk home ;)
ldiddynyc 3 years ago
ehs u didnt land on lift going to second =P but its alright....just that in a tight race, that little rpm u missed to land within lift counts
ricer2o9 4 years ago
nope, they dont
they have the same engine as the base model
I think this is an XRS specific option
donald7150 4 years ago
Hey, do automatic corolla S's have lift???
Lemme know please =]
0xunholyx0 4 years ago
The "S" model is just cosmetic model trim to give that look of being sporty but it has the base engine in it. THe XRS is cosmetic as well as performance to back it up (for a Corolla).

damn its slow

rsiconquest 4 years ago
what mods do you have?
GreddyAccord99 4 years ago
your accord evan if its vtec, your *vtec* is no diff. than what this car has got.....plus in my opinion, toyota makes a better longer lasting car.
bowlinking89 4 years ago
that's good it's your opinion for it's not a longer lasting car. a nice car yes but it's not a vtec. study the vtec engineering and look at what you have. there's 16years+ in the VTEC world chief and it covers all frames. a racing spec engine in a grocery getter. but have a good day though
ldiddynyc 3 years ago
yeah i my 90 accord is faster too, I just bought a 2008 corolla S and runs like a turtle, very confortable dou

Moron that is honda! Toyota is LIFT!
matt9901z 4 years ago
ok morron garbage toyota copied Honda if you know any thing thats why i said vtec u retard understand things befor you replie to them HONDA = VTEC TOYOTA = VVT-li
michaeldonnas 4 years ago
It is a TOYOTA Video! why In the hell would you say Can you say vtec? And Toyota did not "copy" Honda They used the same idea but if you look @ how the motors are put together you would see that they are 2 completely different beast. Just lust like anything else in the world, It has been brought up from someone else, Honda did come out with the idea, I will give you that much.
matt9901z 4 years ago
i used to have a toyota i had a 05 camry with the ground effects and bbs rims it wasnt vvt-li just vvti no lift or wanna be vtec i did used to pertend i had vtec by turing off the ac and go full throtle ...lol
michaeldonnas 4 years ago
Not Bashin ya but your funny You say Wanabe VTEC But yet the VVTL-I Produces just as much hp per liter as the VTEC does
matt9901z 4 years ago
but i dont know if it is lag on your vid or not but it seems as it kicks in way after vtec would vtec is also controled .. is there a vvt.. controler

Can you say TVIS on the 4AGE? Used since the 80's?
HarryWang1 4 years ago
can you say TVIS is completely different?
i thought so
tvis is a system that opens up 4 secondary intake runners on the 4AGE motor after a certain rpm, cant remember though.
VVTL-i is variable VALVE timing (and lift) with intelligence (-i)
ae86crazed 4 years ago
hmm..i wonder why it the vartiable valve cross over is so diff from a honda...i wonder if you had a controller..like the vtec one..would it engage like a honda..iono..but shit is pretty sick
rsenik 4 years ago
Pretty good for a stock corolla.
RICEFREAK 4 years ago
can hear the sound of lift open when reach 6700rpm...
nice man...
carsfanz 4 years ago
it will be more interesting and fun if the lift open at 3000rpm...hahah...
carsfanz 4 years ago
Well, that was slightly faster than a New Beetle. Maybe.
volcanicexplosion 4 years ago
Civics are for niggers and spics.
Brendonbosy 4 years ago

Corolla XRS is an overpriced underperforming car. Civic SI would eat it alive. It also won't get good gas mileage when you're in lift. I'd rather have a car with a V6. Better yet, a turbo 4 banger.
dougdangger 4 years ago
check this out the video response before saying the Si would eat it alive.
boostghost 4 years ago
How retarded. The new civic SI has 30 more HP, but weighs about 500 lbs more. The Hondas are getting heavier and heavier and drifting far from their sportscar roots. The XRS isa true enthusiast car, it even has a cable throttle, not a lame drive by wire like the civic SI. It also isn't ricer/copbait so a lot less bullshit to deal with.
357wheelgunner 4 years ago
Wow check out the big brain on Whoitbe52. Way to state the obvious; did it take you all night to figure that out? The lift is what makes it an XRS as opposed to a Corolla S.
I would rather have a 4 cyl lift engine instead of a 6 cyl regular engine. The XRS allows you to get great MPG driving around like normal when you dont need all 170 HP.
Brendonbosy 4 years ago
man all i gotta say is, if you take the lift out that thing it would just be another piece of shit ricer.
whoitbe52 4 years ago
Lift kicks in at 6800! VVTL-i, FTW!
ToyAltis85 5 years ago
It kicks in at around 6700. The Video and Sound are not sync'd.

check my vids
alec18yt 5 years ago
amazing what the lift can do. my celica matched a 20 psi jetta in 3rd gear starting at 6k rpm
alec18yt 5 years ago
^^ yes. But lift still kicks in at 6500. Basically its the same as the other corollas with lift, higher gearing, higher reving motor. Basically a rolla S with these added on.
Josh30041 5 years ago
Other differences like suspension tuning, steering, brakes etc. are different as well.
SpeedKlz 5 years ago
oh, so at 3500, he just slammed on the pedal?
QuadroPB 5 years ago
quadro, yes lift kicks in at around 6500-8500 (redline).
nice video gloomknight
Josh30041 5 years ago
when does the lift kick in? at around 3500? I heard that it usually kicks in at around 6500 but I don't see anything happening at 6500, someone please clarify for me. thanks.
QuadroPB 5 years ago
The sound is not synced with the video

yeah, cause it sounds like lift in kickin in at 7000
