I only wish it had contained more discouraging comments from Jonathan Goldstein! And that Ira would comment on this in this American Life. A show about being made fun of, perhaps?
This is amazing in so many ways, and the satire makes those of us who are snobbish about our radio listening paradoxically even more snobbish for getting all the references.
Everything down to the title "Ain't Too Proud to Craig," the Grazing in the Grass background music, and the Mr. Torey Malatia quote was SPOT ON. (As was the Ira Glass impression, obviously.) Kudos on making a bunch of liberal elites giggle like school girls!
So spot on it's scary! I love the Jonathan Goldstein comments and calling Alex Blumberg the more macho half of Planet Money and Wait Wait Don't Cum Yet...
@luckygrrrlz Haha, there's an episode where he's trying to teach her how to drive (as Vowell never learned) that probably would have provided some good comments too.
Awesome job! I'm pleased you used a photo that I took of Ira at around 2:05-2:26, where he's wearing earphones. He was being interviewed on KUER's Radio West, an amazing daily radio show that can also be found as a podcast. Anyway, you've captured the TAL ethos brilliantly!
@msunyata "I've listened to about three minutes of it. His imitation of my writing and delivery are so dead-on, it was hard to keep listening and I stopped. If I had to articulate why, I think it was because hearing his version of me, made what I do on the air seem kind of dumb. And the impersonation was so good, I couldn't really pick a fight with it. So I had to decide, do I want to see myself as kind of trite and dumb? Seemed better to stop. Maybe I'll go back sometime."
Great video, but Ira Glass is not an NPR superstar. This American Life is produced by PRI - Public Radio International. PRI is an NPR competitor. Because public radio stations buy from both, people assume they're the same thing, but they aren't.
I, for one, am desperately seeking a partial-nude Rolling Stone-esque (picture his dress shirt unbuttoned, tie loosened, glasses pushed down ever so slightly...) poster of Ira for the walls of my college dorm room. Or a blown up image to cover the entire wall. Or to cover the entire room. Or the whole college. Get on that, Ira.
Not only is the imitation perfect, the style is just like This American Life. If Ira did a sex tape, he would spend time discussing everything behind the scenes that led up to it, how he felt about it afterwards, and wrap it all up with an inconclusive conclusion full of "maybes".
I was sitting here listening, thinking this is so well produced that it would be worthy of a spot on TAL itself.
But then you'd have a War of the Worlds kind of thing going on: as unsuspecting listeners tuned in, we'd be going "WTF? WTF? OMG, the world is ending..." Chaos would ensue.
I am constantly telling people that TAL is my favorite show ever, in any medium. Anytime someone new gets into my car, they MUST listen to TAL. My college classes listen to selections from various episodes. It's the only thing in I've ever been shameless about selling to people. As crazy cat ladies are to cats, I am to TAL.
Having said all that: This parody is KILLER. Best thing on YouTube! You've got the nuances of Ira's voice and delivery down cold, and the scripting is Oscar-worthy. THANKS!!
who are these people that dislike everything that's good in the world? honestly - if you dislike everything, just go away. hating things is not a virtue. it's not. it's not funny or insightful or slick. the fact that you don't enjoy life at all should be on your tombstone, not on youtube. just. kill. yourself. now. don't think about it, just do it.
