The success of the BATMAN movie encouraged other tv series features, but they ll bombed, including this one. A Get Smart movie was made, but abruptly reedited into a 3 part episode.
I recorded the soundtrack of this movie on a cassette recorder at a drive-in when it first came out. I still have the entire movie in my head after all these years!
I love Fred Gwynne. He's a natural for this part. It's too bad the script of this movie sucked so badly. If they had done a better film they might have been able to bring back the Munsters for several more seasons on TV.
Pat Priest was reportedly devastated that she wasn't chosen to be in this movie. The decision made no sense at all. She was much better than Debbie Watson in this role.
There were a lot of sequels and remakes, but they will never ever be as good as Fred, Al, and the rest of the original gang. All the others that followed were only poor imitators.
I think the butler's the same guy who plays Mr. Gateman (Herman's boss) in the TV show! The drunk guy on the boat is Chief Harris from the 3rd episode, I think (A Walk on the Mild Side).
As the TV series was winding down on CBS in the spring of 1966, producers Joe Connelly & Bob Mosher decided to film a theatrical feature, bringing "The Munsters" to your local theater for the first (and last) time....IN COLOR. However, Pat Priest wasn't available to appear as "Marilyn Munster", so Debbie Watson [who starred as Connelly & Mosher's "KAREN" for NBC in 1965] replaced her. Listen for the reference to "CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU?" (in which Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis previously co-starred).
