oh, and DO NOT LET DOGS NEAR THEM!! these little guys can die from that kind of stress. pigs get along great with goats and cats, but NEVER dogs. that will practically be like torturing the poor pig to death.
dont put sunscreen on them because they cant sweat and that will cause themn to overheat and possibly get heat stroke. sugar is a BAD idea for them, and some of their diseases like dippity pig are very mysterious. also, you dont want deal with a sick one cuz THERE ARE NO VETS FOR THEM
@9 i dont recommend it. it wont be but a matter of time before that is not the case. even little pocket dogs can exhaust a pig to death. pigs are food for dogs. outside of a few cases of wild habilinas being able to protect themselves against domestic pet dogs, the sad truth is that the pig will die 99.999% of the time WHEN (not IF, but WHEN) the dog finally decides its had enough, and changes the relationship into one more antagonistic for the poor little piggy :(
this lady may have her heart in the right place and she may have the best of intentions, but she is grossly misinformed about pot bellied pigs.
she is spreading mis-information. much of her information is untrue.
potbellies average up to about 280lbs. these are a brand new species of sorts, and they get many medical issues. they dont live 18yrs like that. males and females will tusk. they get arthritis very easily. etc ...
@jeivory no. these arent good being anything other than pets.
but sadly, they make remarkable food for pretty much the rest of the animal kingdom :(
according to some sources, these pigs are the result of genetic experimentation conducted around 1986 between 2 farmers (one in texas, one in canada) in an effort to save a certain species of small vietnameese pig for which there were only 5 found left alive in the wild. they are only meant to be pets :)
There is no such thing as a Micro pig or a tea cup pig. They are simply young pot belly pigs that haven't grown to full size. The breeders breed the pigs while they are still young and small so that buyers think the parents are full grown. But the unsuspecting person ends up with a giant pig that has an intelligence higher than dogs. Sadly, "tea cup" pigs are almost always abandoned when they grow to full size as people no longer find them cute, and don't have enough room for them.
@MuscialhHeart Ours is 7 months old and she is only 13 lbs. Also, her mom was 30lbs and her dad was 45lbs. we saw 2 other offspring, a year old, and they were 17lbs. We also talked with other people that got pot belly pigs from this same pair of parents, and at 5 years one was only 25 lbs, none got over 30. So we shall see how big our Tinkerbell will get. It is sad that people will give them up after they reach that weight, they are the same cute little piggy you fell in love with, just bigger.
OMG it literally sounds like: HELP HELP HELP!!!!Get me out of here!" I know nothing aout pigguy sounds but she doesn't sound happy. It sounds disturbed. .
@CJBountyHunter they are priceless. absolutely priceless :D mine is the best $35 i ever spent!
if you do ever decide to get one, just do your research, and dont try to make it do tricks or "train" it and stuff. just hang out with it and bond. the kind of way they bond with humans is a chapter in your life that you will cherish forever, and never look back from again.
your money will go to vet bills, fence repairs, food, whatev. and your yard WILL go to shit, but its worth it!!
@caribbeanNO1 i cant eat pork anymore because i know the face behind it is the same as the little guy i have at home. btw, pigs have a sense of smell thats as keen as dogs'. mine smells on me the scent of cooked pork if ate any. not that i eat pork as such, but sometimes i have a pepperoni pizza.when i step out and am on the go. not that i make it at home or anything, but when i come back from outside having had a slice earlier in the day, he acts very standofffish with me when i get home lol.
im new to this i really want a pig but im going to learn more about them this helped alot

@RiGhTER1231 yes they do. not like hogs, but by our standards for housepets, yes they grow big. easily up to 300lbs.
hogs grow to about a 1000 lbs, so by those standards, these are "micro". but not by our standards for conventional housepets.

Can they live outdoors in a cold barn? Like when its zero out?

@Cuzntime I doubt it. They don't have fur to protect them. they need to be warm.

They smell fine if you bathe them like you would a dog. If it's hot or sunny out they will roll in the mud.
