If Handel can't be resurrected from the grave by the power of Jesus and this performance of the Hallelujah Chorus, he is too far gone.
Jesus was black, as a matter of fact, not a blue-eyed blonde, although I love blue-eyed blondes also. Check Jesus' lineage and the self-description by ancestor Solomon in Chapter 1 of Song of Solomon, King James version and literal Hebrew.
I'm sure Mr. Handel would be delighted with this version. Everyone is enjoying themselves, don't forget he was a musician and all musicians like to improvise and experiment. Keep up the good work
The southeast region in arkansas is using this piece for the senior high all-region choir clinic this year. I love this piece because it not only has an ubeat feeling, but it is still all for his glory.
Being stiff and dry doesn't make music "holy" and any version would be totally foreign to how worship music was played in Christ's time anyway. And guess what, they didn't speak English.
This is BEAUTIFUL!!! Praise God for your joyful talent and skill. You all sound like the heavenly hosts and if any of you who are in this choir read this I want to say thank you so much for such heartfelt, lovely, and unselfconsious singing to express love of God. You guys are just wonderful.
I was in a little 30 member choir in San Diego & we were presented this version one year. Our very whitebread choir had a little trouble getting the rhythm, but our black director had confidence that we could get funky! And we did! WHOOO! It was incredible! BUT I'm so glad I didn't hear this version before we sang it or it might have dashed our confidence!
As for the comment that this is a mockery, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I think the choirs' response is classy and beautiful!
I agree with Patrick, the choir could have been cleaner. But the notes were right on and full of joy. This is how, I think, the song should be sung. The original is a little dim for a praise song imo.
obviously this choir did a marvelous job because they gotta whole lot of haters! lol! its funny to see how people would rather sit and speculate than give God the glory and honor that is due Him...smh...
i LOVE this interpretation of this song. i am a huge fan classical music but im not so closeminded to believe that every composer intended us to perform their compositions exactly how they would have. i think handel would be very happy to see that u have taken this song and used it wonderfully for the Lord's glory. i listen to the recording of this song on wow christmas every year because it reminds me of how awesome God is and why we celebrate. thank you for spreading the Gospel and for the
I love both versions of this wonderful piece of music. What we should focus on is glorifying God, and we all have different ways to do this. This version makes me bop my head and tap my feet and dance in worship to GOD!!!
Thanks for your comment but the one thing that is allowed in our worship experience is a shout. We stay away from performances because they tend to be controlled and clean as you have said. This rendition is a Soulful Celebration by one of our greatest contributors to music, Mr. Quincy Jones. I'm sure you can find a lot of what you'd like to see on youtube and other mediums. But as for us, we chose what's best, and we believe that it's marvelous in the eyes of whom we sing Hallelujah.
I love this version. We're singing it at our Christmas concert this weekend with our small (41) community choir in Seattle. Wish we could sound as good as you! Thanks for sharing!
@atlantagmwa "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord." My music is a million miles from this but at the same time, right next door. What a glorious joyful offering.
I prefer the original better. The choir is somewhat "shouty" which ruins the tone and causes people to get out of tune. They could have done without the solo on the end. This choir is pretty good but is capable of a cleaner performance. It's ok, but it's just not my thing.
YAS DEBI!!!!!!!!! I thought there was a tad bit more shouting than singing but I loved it! Everyone did good!!! I loved the lady in the alto section, she was so enthusiastic. But they were all cute lol =+)
Maybe you people who didn't like this version forgot the purpose of the Hallelujah chorus. It was meant to praise God. And by the looks of it, these people are definitely praising God, and having a whole of fun doing so. If you want to keep a closed mind to the wide spread and ever evolving world of music, then you can do so without making comments about how these performers ruined a piece of music. Gospel is an emotional and legitimate form of music, the least you can do is respect that.
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. This rendition is over the top and totally awesome! This choir has put a smile on God's face! The words are the same no matter how it is performed - as long as The Lord receives the honor and glory - just as in this rendition!
That is AWESOME!!! I love it, I love it, I LVOE IT!!!! When all souls come together in unity throught music to exalt the the Name of Lord, there is no power that can withstand. PRAISE AND WORSHIP!
I think they sound great...it does take some getting used to. I like the second half the best, but the attempt to arrange it with some of Handel's original structure in the first half is admirable.
I think they sound great...it does take some getting used to. I like the second half the best, but the attempt to arrange it with some of Handel's original structure in the first half is admirable.
If you do not like gospel that is one thing, but to be disgusted with it? "rolling in his grave"- didn't realize you were such good buddies with him. I don't mean to be harsh, but you do not know him, or how he would feel. For all you know he might me singing and dancing along. Many people also forget that the message is still the same, praising God. Which is what mattersmost. I think you reacted too quickly and harshly. This music is phenomonal. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.
There are so many ways to praise God The praising and uplifting of the Lord God is what matters most. And if this version of this song brings someone closer to God and or strengthens their faith and relationship with God then so be it and let the Church say AMEN!!!
actually, it is an interpretation with a purpose. Many people don't know that Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, was created as to show the progress and different types of african american music through out history. And any great musician appreciates another great musician's work. The arranger of this did not trash Handel's Messiah. He merely adapted it for another purpose, with a great story. You also have to understand the culture and history of the music to fully appreciate it.
I am disgusted with this version of this song, it is a terrible mockery of a timeless masterpiece. Handel is rolling in his grave to her such a thing. I am appalled that it seems anyone can publish any noisome thought in the music world.
The you don't understand music at all. Instead of trying to pull the amazing creativity of artists, especially Quincy Jones that mastered this version of the Handel Messiah's Hallelujah Chorus in a masterpiece call "The Soulful Celebration", into your small world, I'm happy we live in a world that free to let us be who we are in a modern world. Nothing wrong with the traditionalism of Handel, but I also appreciate this modern and relative version for my life. Enjoy Life.
@slien007 to be honest, I am digusted that you have the nerve to write something like this. Music is all about interpretation and this is Mervyn Warren and Quincy Jones' interpretation of the Hallelujah Chorus. If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to listen to it, but do not degrade the quality of this great genre of music!!
You are entitled to your opinion, but from a musical prospective, Handel would be ecstatic that his music was kept alive and in a format the younger generation could enjoy. Yes, it is radically different from the original, however the theme and message remain intact. Rewriting it in such a way is a TESTIMONY all by itself. Only Quincy Jones could have accomplished such a dynamic feat. THANKS. Mr. Q, job well done!
@slien00 As a non-believer, this video brought me to tears. There is so much power and majesty in this music I can't even describe it. I am a classical musician with a bachelors and 2 masters degrees in voice. I've performed Handel's Messiah over 20 times either as a soloist and/or chorus member. This rendition is JUST as sacred in its own rights as Handel's is and maybe even more-so because we actually KNOW what it's supposed to sound like in this version. The affect here is stunning. Bravo!
@Bratzbatzbgo Bravo to you for hearing!! As a bagpiper I stood next to the symphony conductor for my 1 minute solo bit-piece with all that glorious classical chorus singing out around behind me over my screaming melody through the big drones. A bagpiper who sang along with George Szell's Cleveland Symphony in the 50's. I'm also a bagpipe maker and I spend every day bending grass to help people try to sing modal music with their fingers. Then I hear this!! Such heart.
@slien007 As I child I HATED to perform Handel's version in school because I COULD NOT relate to it. When a SOULFUL CELEBRATION came out I ENJOYED!! Because it was worship I was USED to, I RELATED to the ENTIRE composition.
I love this version and searched all over until I found this version. I love this song especially at Christmas Time. Y'all made me wanna sing with you all. Great job.
Technicalities are reduced to less than zero when such a Divine performance is registered. Collective talent like this is beyond the term "Miracle", not only in the anthropological sense.
That was lovely! However, if you listen to the original version, you will hear that the choir aspirated the H on Hallelujah. Also, the section beginning at 2:30 (as per the original) was sung with the "forever" as much more staccato. Both of these techniques help large choirs to better enunciate their diphthongs to produce cohesive and fluid diction!
