Very sad, and happening across Britain. First it was shops and stores, then pubs and social clubs, then restaurants: even fast food outlets are closing now. Still think the supermarkets and corporations are a good thing anyone? The future? Paying at/near to minimum wage and "contracted hours" ( work any hours they tell you for flat rate, weekend, holidays etc.) often to the very people that used to run those businesses, or do real jobs without being constantly "spread-sheeted" & "team-leadered".

This video is only the tip of the iceburg, I moved out of Arklow to college 4 years ago and I have to say everytime I go back i'm saddened by how bad its been getting, its not just the main street, The whole town needs a facelift a bit of culture.

i find this hilarious...classic irish moaning mentality..if the shopping centre wasnt built the same idiots wud b complaining that nobody is willing to invest in the town..of course smaller shops have to make way if they cant compete with the big boys..thats the risk u take when become an entrepeneur that ur shop may have to close 1 day if business goes but at the same time u are also rewarded when things go well,i remember the same people complaining when the bypass was proposed

The thing that intrigued me was the rapidity with which the change came. I , and I think most of us, would agree that change has always been with us...all is always on the move. The main street now needs to re-invent itself.

We need a good seafood restaurant on the quay, and more made of the lovely harbour etc. Hopefully it will all happen in time...Thanks for your comments..

interesting video ! ,i grew up in arklow in the 70s and left it for london in the 80s and it had many deep rooted problems then,,there was always a lot of pubs and bookies,lol

and the youth and community centre,ormonde hall were in a bad state then,,,i have been back many times to see family however and its sad to see it in this state,possibly a sign of the capatilist times we are forced to compete with.....or possibly arklow needs to move with the times ??

There has been a significant population explosion in Arklow over the past 5-7yrs, its encouraged the development of the BridgeWater SC. This has brought about many changes to the economic and retail landscape of the town. The old shops will never compete with the retails giants in the SC. This is nothing new, its been happening across the UK for the last 50yrs and Ireland for the past 15yrs. Whats needed is to study examples elsewhere where this has happened and learn how to turn it around.

A bit sentimental.

The cinema and a few of those buildings was closed well before the centre came . The river has always been a disgrace, littered with drunks and rubbish making a stroll with the family incomfortable. I rarely went to Arklow because (and lets be honest) it has always been a kip.I would have to make an extra 30 minute journey to Dublin. Bridgewater is a good thing.

The reason the shopping centre is doing so well is because people now have a choice. Before we had no choice and had to pay through the nose for every thing. Bridge water is the best thing to happen to Arklow.

Our main street is dieing as well. It is not good. There is a small revival with specialty shops, but all to many closed stores.
