Kissing the hand of a scholar is Sunnah. One example amongst many hadith is: Jabir RadiAllahu Anhu said: "`Umar ibn al-Khattab got up and kissed the hand of Allah's Messenger." Many other scholars, to name a few, Tamim ibn Salama, Sufyan al-Thawri, and the school of Imam Shafi`i including Bayhaqi and Nawawi say its sunnah as it shows the necessary magnification and respect that we owe to the Aalims and it's the practice of the Companions of the Prophet Salallahu Alayhi Wasalam and true Salaf.
We would more than happily kiss Our Pir Sahibs feet aswell, as Umar ibn-al Khattb and the Sahaba RadiAllahu Anhum would run to kiss The Messenger Salallahu Alahi Wasalams feet, out of their endless deep love and respect.
Can you supply the reference of this hadith? and its authenticity according to the classical scholars? Also kissing the Prophet's SAW feet is much different to kissing your pir's feet, so can you give any evidence of this from Sahaba kissing the feet of another Sahaba? Or even someone kissing the feet of any of the Four Imams? JazakAllah Khair
Also can you give references for where you quoted "Many other scholars, to name a few, Tamim ibn Salama, Sufyan al-Thawri, and the school of Imam Shafi`i including Bayhaqi and Nawawi say its sunnah" JazakAllah Khair.
Bukhari in al-Adab al-mufrad relates with a sound chain that Suhayb the freedman of al-`Abbas saw Sayyidna Hazrat`Ali kiss the hand and feet of the Prophet's uncle al-`Abbas and said to him: "O Uncle! Be pleased with me." al-Muqri' also narrates it through Sulayman ibn Ayyub and through a third chain from his shaykh al-Tahawi in al-Rukhsa fi taqbil al-yad (p. 73 #13, p. 76 #15).
Abu Malik al-Ashja`i said that he once asked another Companion of the Tree, Ibn Abi Awfa, "Give me the hand that swore allegiance to the Allah's Messenger, that I may kiss it." Ibn al-Muqri' related it with a sound chain.
Another example: Imam Muslim (d. 261) when he met Imam Bukhari (d. 256) said to him: Da`ni hatta uqabbila rijlayka ya ustadh al-ustadhayn, "Let me kiss your feet, O professor of the two professors."
It is authentically recorded that others of the true Ahl al-hadith did this also, such as the Tabi`is Khaythama ibn `Abd al-Rahman al-Ju`fi (d. 85) and Talha ibn Musarrif (d.112) kissing each other's hand, and the same Talha kissing the hand of Malik ibn Mighwal (d. 159), and Sufyan ibn `Uyayna and Fudayl ibn `Iyad kissing the hand and foot of Husayn ibn `Ali al-Ju`fi (d. 203) respectively.
Imam Ghazzali (alaihir rahmah) states that Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (radi Allahu anhu) kissed the hand of Sayyiduna Umar Farouk (radi Allahu anhu). (Kimya-e Sa'adat; Awaariful Mu'aarif)
We kiss their hands and feet out of love for them. Ibadat is only for ALLAH Azawajal.
im no scholar by the way...just a lay person. i found most of these evidences off a interesting article by Shaykh Hisham Kabbani on 'Kissing the hand of a scholar is Sunna'. Hope it benefits you.
yes, of course, i have posted the link on your you tube page (its spaced out unfortunatly) as it wouldn't let me post it under these 'text comments' even though i tried many times over. enjoy the read :-)
....actually i don't think the link got posted :-( Try this: go into google, type in kissing the hand of a scholar is sunna and its the first article on the page..hope thats ok.
There is an interesting story. Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddeen Aulia RadiAllah Anhu states that he heard from his murshid, Hazrat Khwaja Baba Farid Ganje Shakar RadiAllah Anhu, that once Hazrat Abu Said Abul Khayr RadiAllah Anhu was riding on a horse. A mureed approached him on foot and kissed the murshids knee.
Lower! ordered the murshid. The mureed then kissed his foot. Lower still ordered the murshid. The mureed then kissed the knee of the horse.
Go still lower, ordered the mushid. The mureed then kissed the horses hoof. Go even lower, commanded the murshid whereupon the mureed kissed the ground. Then the murshid remarked, In commanding you to go lower and lower, my purpose was not to have you kiss the ground but rather to indicate to you that the lower you go in the presence of your murshid), the higher will be your spiritual state.

Why do you kiss the pir's hand? Is this permissible, if so what is the evidence for this.
