  • you have many fine instruments my man, if it's not too out of line...what do you do for a living?

  • I remember reading somewhere that this song has SEVEN guitar parts. For me this song is the pinnacle of Keith's genius in the studio. Maybe you could whip out the paisley tele and put up that scary high lead part some day! - thanks

  • Great thanks for posting another interesting video. I'm trying to find a good one in open G as well. Personally I prefer the sound of open E as I find it darker and more bluesy than open G. I've noticed that Keef likes to move from major to minor notes and chords. Here he moves from C# major to C# minor in the intro and verse (eg from C# to B and A. F# is in both major and minor scales). He does this alot in songs, during verses or choruses. Key to the stones sound I reckon. Best wishes.

  • @leapsplashafrog You can check out live versions, which I'm pretty sure Keith did in open G. Personally, I hate the live versions of this song. But that's just me.

  • @privettricker I agree with you about the live versions of this song that they did, they don't come close to the Studio version at all. Thought I was the only one who agreed on that. Great video as well as your others. I subbed.

  • Great job. It is in "E " and that comes from the man himself. Keiths song all the way! I even have a version of him on the vocal and it is amazing. I say play it the waty is was recorded. Buy a guitar for specific tunings. I have 6 and they are all in different tunigs. My guitars aren't as nice as yours! Hope you have insurance on those beauties! How about "Kind hearted woman" By George Thoroughgood? He does the best version of that song I have ever heard. I play it in open "G" Think I a wrong?

  • New guitar in the collection priv?

  • For what its worth Rolling Stones Fake Book indicates standard tuning.

I love the Open E version but it necessitates a few guitars on stage thats for sure!

  • Great shirt!

  • Privettricker it's awesome to see you're big enough of a Stones fan to post two covers of this.

Not sure if that's a new guitar or not but either way it's got sex appeal dude!!

  • what's the guitar? les paul?

  • hey what amp do you have?

  • @TheFinnosaurus That's a Marshall AVT 50H half-stack.

  • @privettricker Cheer's man!

  • Great playing on all your videos and Im sure I will pick up

some things and learn some new songs. Thanks for making

    these videos.

    Great stuff.

    I like diffrent tunings too.

  • Yea, makes total sense and answers my clueless question. So thats probably why the openE tuning I was tsught was called Bruce Palmer Modal tuning. Hiw OWN variationon it. Now to figure out xhord in this standard open E. URRRG. thanks for your help and "Love Alive" too. All that stuff (chording) you we doing up between the 7th and 10 th fret I just change to e chord on 1st, 4th 6th frets (on lOVE aLIVE) THANKS A MILLION kEITH

  • privett, 1st thanks for your lessons. I learned CSN (3 songs) in open E--

EEEEBE and sounds great. So ,my question is are there diff variations on the

    open E tunings? Thanks

  • @wishiwasdiggin Well, EEEEBE isn't open E. It's technically an altered tuning. Open E is EBEG#BE (same intervals as open D, except everything's tuned up). So yes, you can do a whole slew of tunings in the key of E, but they're not necessarily open E. Does that make sense?

  • I like you, I like what you're doing and I appreciate your efforts on this one but...

My problem with this video is that whenever someone plays along with the original recording as apposed to a backing track, it sounds better, it sounds great, in fact it sounds great without you playing too... The only true test to a cover, whether or not you are playing right is to play along with a backing track. Or a Band. Personally, If I can't find a backing track, I won't do the video...

  • @kniazeff I post videos for instructional purposes. This isn't a performance, per se. It's meant to show people the fingerings I use for songs. I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone. If you like my playing, great. If you don't like my playing, I hope you won't take it personally when I say I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

  • @privettricker

Please don't take my comment as a put down, it wasn't meant to be. Let me put it another way...

Your video is great, but in my opinion, it would be 100 times better, if you played over a backing track.

The reason is when people play over the original recording, it's impossible to tell what they are playing

apart from what Keith And Mick are playing, it's all mixed up sound wise.

  • @kniazeff I guess I'll have to live with the shame of my videos being 100 times worse than they could be. Now that I think about it, I can live with that. But I'm fascinated by the short-cut culture that's developed in recent years, where people expect to be able to download guitar skills and not have to put in any time figuring things out for themselves. My demos aren't meant to explain every nuance. They're meant to give players a starting point so they can learn for themselves.

  • sweet shirt!!!!!

  • My wife thinks you are performing while in your underwear. I have assured her this isn't the case. Can you confirm? Great job with the open e!

  • @rdeclan Why would she assume I wear underwear?

  • @Privettricker - I've seen a lot of your video's, and it noticed me you never play on a Stratocaster, why?

  • @meneerMaxTeeuwen You haven't seen enough of my videos.

  • I've never really been a huge fan of the Stones, but I'm finding that the better my guitar skills get, the more I want to play their music. That said, this just might be my favorite intro to any song I've ever heard.

  • One of my ALL time fave Stones songs..that opening riff is PERFECT.What's your opinion on them as far as their best music? I love that period with Mick Taylor..

  • Epiphone or Gibson?

  • For my money, you're the baddest cat on guitar here on YT. Love your stuff!

  • Nice... this is right tuning to be in! Just can't fig out how to quickly tune the guitar to open E! I am using my amps tuner to get it right . Can you tip me the right frets to tune the guitar to itself?

  • Keith wrote this during a winter storm in London. I guess Irene lurking off Charleston's shores inspired you to cover this PT!

  • NICE!! Think Keith does this in STD on stage these days right or maybe Open G?

  • Thank you for another great lesson and another great t shirt!

  • great song great playing!

  • THIS IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's just a kiss away. Only needs a touch of tremolo IMO ;~) TFTV

  • is that a new guitar? I havent seen you play that one before.

  • @Tac0Man222 Got it about six weeks ago. Check my channel for a few more videos with this one.

  • @privettricker SMOKIN FUCKIN TUNE!!!!! GREAT JOB!!!!

  • TO ELEVEN

  • this rocks man!! I see that your standard tuning version of this is almost up to 100K,that's amazing

  • CRANK IT TO 11!!!!!

  • damn, I want to leave work and go home and tune up to E! (and crank my amp to 11)

  • based on the tone you are getting out of your guitar and amp, so similar to the recording, and considering that Keith will generally do it the easiest way possible, I vote for open e.

  • tht's really good!

  • Standard has more chime and swamp.

  • thats a beautiful guitar that! what type is it? the sounds really nice too:D

  • one of my facorite songs by them

  • dude that was sick

  • let it bleed or exile? which is the better album?

  • dude...im having trouble deciding which is cooler. Your t-shirt collection or your guitar collection!!

  • Hey man love the covers. I had a question about the sympathy for the Devil song live version at altamont. During the song they stop because of the crowd, but start back up and its Mick that starts the rhythm guitar part. I know he is playing E/A/D but does he add any other notes during the entire rhythm part?

  • @PaxRomana28 Not that I know of.

  • @PaxRomana28 I think he plays E & G strings on the 4th fret and then slides down to the 2:nd fret. just fit it in when you should be playin E

  • so the solo is in standard tuning, minor pentatonic scale?

  • Nice. I love this song. I think this is probably the tuning Keith used.

  • Love it man.....I think your ear was right with this one too. I hope you keep it up !

  • privettricker thanks again.

  • PT, you are correct. The studio cut is in E. This song is brilliant on the chord progression and how Mick Taylor weeves his masterful art in between. Keith Talks about this song in "Life". thanks

  • "These ones go to eleven."

  • the bomb.... nice job

  • Wow, that was a revelation! I love the lick during the verse at the 12th, 14th, and then the 9th fret - fits perfectly. I also read Life and if I'm remembering correctly Keith wrote that it was in open E....and I thought, gee, PT posted a standard version and it sounded right.... Anyway - great job again. Thanks!

  • thank you oh yea Gimme some shelter>>>> awesome job

  • thank you excellany oh yea Gimme some shelter>>>> awesome job

  • its in standard tuning! all live videos Keith play standard

  • Excelllent

  • LESSONS NOW!!!!!!!!

  • Quite possible for the recorded version. Live however, he is definitely playing it in standard.

  • @MinivanMegafun100 Was he playing it in standard back on the 69 tour? To be honest, I hate this song live, so I never listen to the 69 versions.

  • @privettricker No idea about '69 man. He was all over the place in those days )I watched "Ladies & Gentlemen..." and I saw him playing Brown Sugar in open G on a Strat of all things).

  • True there are a lot a lot of standard tuning songs too. Monkey man IS standard tuning which surprised me.He played a lot in open tunings too at this time. I would say 50%? I should not have written ALL the tunes were in open tunings but Tons were. Stray cat blues, salt of the earth,JJF,no expectations(Brian)You can't always...,Gimme shelter,Honkey tonk women,When they hit Sticky Fingers there is open G everywhere!

  • the standard tuning one was better

  • @CoryWong707 My favorite comment so far. :)

  • @CoryWong707 I've read/heard it was in open E, but I prefer not to mess around too much from standard tuning at this point in my learning. I like both versions; I can see the chord shapes a little better in this one, PT. You've been busy lately, so thanks again!

  • @spacedoginnebraska what do you mean PT. iv'e been busy lately

  • I read an interview in Rolling Stone that specifically said that all the tunes For Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed were in either open E or D. Honkey Tonk Women was his first open G.That is straight from Keith.Child of the moon and Jumpin' Jack Flash was the start of open tunings in E and D. He experimented and eventually learned open G from Ry Cooder who later accused Keith of stealing his riffs.I don't think he did really because Keith readily admits that he learned G from ry but in a new way

  • @andy65guitar Keith's memory is understandably hazy. Sympathy for the Devil is in standard tuning (the solo, anyway), as is Factory Girl. Plenty of standard tuning on Let it Bleed: Country Honk, Love in Vain, Live With Me, Let it Bleed, and Midnight Rambler. Personally, I think Monkey Man is standard, although I know plenty of people disagree.

  • @privettricker Monkey Man rhythm guitar is on standard capo on 2nd, slide sounds like open G though, as in Love in Vain. I think Gimme Shelter sounds correct in open E. If you take for granted what he said in "Life" that he wrote it along with You Got the Silver (also open E) during the shooting of Performance, that would be '68, the time he was writting/recording a lot of things in open E or D. Anyway, great job again!

  • @sharkyjoe77 Agreed on all counts!

  • @privettricker HA HA HA the T-shirt man, it goes to 11!!! Thumbs up!

  • ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! You totally unlocked this song for me!

  • Muito bom....

  • Which make of guitar do you have there? I love the looks of it, awesome guitar man great sound to and nice cover.

  • request:hot stuff off of black and blue

  • Comment removed

  • tricker,do you hold the pick like eddie van halen with the thumb and middle finger or is regular thumb and index finger?

  • @angela21215 I kind of switch around, even during a song. Sometimes it's thumb/index, sometimes it's thumb/middle, and sometimes it's thumb/index/middle. :)

  • Text book job of the recorded version. Great rhythm, perfect tuning and variation as necessary. Awesome as always.

  • This is absolutely SICK! I like the Open E version MUCH better. First one I saw here on YouTube! BEST one I saw here on YouTube

  • Wow

  • I don't think there is any question that this is the THE way Keith played the rhythm. Thanks for posting. I cannot bear to see or listen to another version that slaughters this song. Keep posting great videos. Nico

  • @nicogizmo The only problem with playing it in open E is that you can't do the guitar solo!

  • @privettricker Wasn't the solo done by Mick Taylor on the other guitar anyway while Keith does this bit?

  • @theredraven The solo on this one is pure Chuck Berry licks, which means it's definitely Keith. Mick T. didn't play like that.

  • @theredraven Keith plays both guitar parts, rhythm in Open E and lead in standard. Mick Taylor only played on 2 tracks on Let it Bleed, this not being one of them.

  • @wellergilardino9 I think Mick T is just playing slide on Love in Vain and rhythm on Live With Me. Before that, he did the lead overdubs on Honky Tonk Women (which he thought was just a session gig -- he didn't realize that was his audition for the band).

  • @wellergilardino9 ......Now I feel like a slightly sad Panda for being under a false assumption.

    :-(

  • you are the man! after reading Life and stumbling onto your you tube lessons and covers i am completely hooked on the Stones again! thanks! i do think keith is in open e on this one btw

  • @btraficanti I'll mark you down as one vote for Open E. :)

  • @privettricker cool and thanks again. please keep it up. i learned to love when i get the email from YouTube that you have a posted a new one. do you transcribe all from ear?

  • @btraficanti I'm in the exact same position. I really enjoyed how much attention Keith paid in his book to the fact that the open tuning changed everything for him... I now have a guitar dedicated to open tuning for when I just want to enjoy playing

  • Siiiick. I love Keef! Best rhythm player...ever.

  • @moneysliz Don't forget Keith also played lead on this one, so he's also no slouch at soloing. :)

  • alright! thanks

  • nice :) and 2nd :)

  • Epic, You've inspired to learn guitar and your lessons have been so helpful, thank you!

  • nice

  • 1st! : )
