  • Don't see how this is fake! The kits of the players are from that era and that's how turf moor looked back then and they can't just rebuild the turf and everything around it..... Love this old footage, just something about it makes you love it :)

  • 4p for a flake!

  • i see Sir Alex Ferguson in the bench

  • wow,,not much has changed

  • fantastic footage.

  • LOL Giggs's debut. Terrible reporter's voice. You'll go far on the BBC.

  • I think this is fake, the video quallity is too good for something recored over 100 years ago.

  • @FGaribay7 Thank you - that's a great compliment to the BFI National Archive's restoration team! The reason why the quality is surprisingly good is that the original camera negative still exists. Most early films only survive in badly damaged screening copies - but if the negative survives in reasonably good shape (this one has some chemical decay), the image quality of newly-struck prints will be excellent. After all, 35mm film offers a higher resolution image than high-definition video.

  • @BFIfilms Theres no need for thanks I was just stating my own personal opinion as to whether this is actual footage or a reenactment

  • @FGaribay7 You're right, it's fake. Me and some friends carefully reconstructed a turn-of-the-century football ground, researched design, advertising billboards etc, but the hardest part was the costumes. We had to commission 500 period costumes for the crowd along with the repro cotton football kits and boots. We added the smoke towers etc in the background post-production. The budget was huge, but we feel it was worthwhile for this low key re-enactment.

  • @FGaribay7 not a fake, theres a photo of that old turf moor stadium in the burnley museum. have a look at some of the other films BFI have restored that are of even better quality and try telling me they`re fakes too! its great to watch these old films, how the world we live in has changed in such a short time.

  • Simply stunning! thanks for posting.

  • Wonderfull to see Turfmoor I will always love it

  • Wonder if Alex Ferguson went to this game lol

  • MU got 7 minutes of injury time even back then? What a travesty!

  • Ryan Giggs Making his debut

  • @Kirranium LMAOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • @Kirranium XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • @Kirranium

    Hahahahahahahaha.

    You have a spirit. ;)

  • Ooh I remember this one, it was Giggs' first match!

  • And for viewers in black & white, Burnley are wearing their famous green shirts!

  • Ryan Giggs chyba już grał ;)

  • Long live Man-United!!!

  • Never ever must Burnley leave Turfmoor, for me its the greatest ground ever no question

  • Has anybody noticed the people in the background they are really big compared to the other people in the film.

  • nice bit of history

  • pretty sure that the UTD goalkeeper at the end is Harry Moger, pretty noticeable due to being 6'3" tall as players were generally a bit shorter then. he only joined Utd in 1903 yep i think its the date on the video is wrong; still over 100 years though, amazing

  • This is 1907 the second last player running out is Charlie Roberts and the fifth player is defiantly Billy Meredith why is this being said as 1902.

  • @Greg2cool We never played Burnley in 1907

  • This is fantastic! Just wish it was earler as my Great Grandfather William Tait played for Newton Heath back in 1887. I have a cup he won for a dribbling contest.

  • Is this definately 1902?

The fifth player to run out looks very much like Billy Meredith, who didnt sign for United until 1906.

  • picture cristiano ronaldo playing in that time

  • For ten bob a game?

  • wanna be football team? we have now beat all of the 'big 4' teams.

  • Burnley has always been better than Manchester United.

  • i just saw scholes and giggs in that video... pause it at 0:37

  • lol

init its definatly giigs not sure about schools thhough

  • united just lost to burnley this time!!!

  • United web site says: attendance 4000.

    Scorers Pegg and OG.

    Date: Dec 6 1902.

  • this is when football was a mans game and money had nothing to do with football.

  • @Boysoldier94119 well said boy soldier

  • @Boysoldier94119

Well maybe there's alot of money going on today. But I prefer the football of today than this one. Today football is more populair, with better players and more speed in the game itself.

  • @Boysoldier94119

One thing you can't deny is that football is a much more addicting game to look at compared to that year.

  • Nobodies wearing black shorts!

  • Also, Burnley are in their green shirts with black shorts, which they only wore from around 1908-1910.

This match is more likely to be either United's 3-2 win on 10th March 1909 or Burnley's 2-0 win on 15th January 1910.

  • Of course, I meant to type "Burnley are in their green shirts with black SOCKS"...

  • The narrator said the commentaters often referred to them as ???? United.......could you please tell me what she said....thanks.

  • It sounded to me like 'Burt' Utd or 'Dirt' Utd! I don't think either is right, especially the second one. I'll have a check in one of my railway books at a later date, maybe I'll find something there. Also refers to them being called Newton Heath, which was the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway workshops, where Man U originated from.

  • She says "The" United.

  • @decorativeedison After all there is only one.

  • THE United? ..... I think !!

  • dirt! yes dirt thats what you are

  • Why are ppl arguing on here ??

Isnt their a video where you idiots can throw insults at each other elswhere?

  • 'THE UNITED' as opposed to 'Manchester United'

  • we wore Green between 1900 and 1910 plain Red shirts before that and Claret with Blue sleeves from September 1910 onwards

  • @decorativeedison I've decided in light of new evidence that the date of 1902 is right after all. Apparently Burnley adopted thier green kit earlier than thought, in 1900. Also, a team photo of United from 1902 shows them wearing shirts with white collars and socks with light bands, just like they are wearing in the clip. They do not wear that kit in any other season. The man stood to the side as the players emerge is James West.

  • The date dosn't seem right to me.

Does that not look like Sandy Turnbull as the United Players come out onto the pitch? And Ernest Mangnall leading them out? Neither of those two were at United in 1902.

Also the pitch markings are post 1902 and the golakeeper appears to be wearing a different shirt to the outfield players (this only started to happen around 1909). United seem to be wearing black socks, which they did not do until around 1908...?

  • That's a brief explanation why people say they hate United, it's because they haven't got a fucking clue what they're talking about, and deep down they wish they were United. now you know why we call little city supporters the LIARS, why we call Liverpool supporters Filth and Leeds SCUM. and now you now why every trophy we win feels extra special knowing the whole ABU nation is squirming inside and want to scream.

  • Fuckin hell, spot on mate

  • Another reason why people say they hate United is because they blame them for football becoming too commercial, Now try explaining to these people that Liverpool were the first to have sponsors on there shirts and opened the door to all this commecialisation and they will look at you like they're Mentally challenged and put their fingers in their ears so they don't have to listen to the truth, because that's not what they want to hear. So they're you go marvy118, cont-

  • But the real reason alot of clubs hate United is because during the late 60's, 70's and 80's they had the largest away following in Britain, known as the Red Army, and it wasn't uncommon for these supporters to tear towns apart when they played there, and they would also give other supporters a good kicking in the process. now im not saying they didn't get a dose of their own medicine at times because they did, but on a whole they made other supporters look like twats. cont-

  • and the world as well and you can start to see the jealousy that they have to put up with. teams like City, Liverpool and Leeds have also spent decades mocking the deaths of the Busby Babes who died in a plane crash in 1958, because they are so jealous that they will never be as famous as Man Utd, even before the disaster United had the largest crowds in the country, but City being so bitter tried to make people believe the only reason people loved United was because of the tragedy. cont-

  • marvy1118, United aren't hated by people in Manchester, they're hated by manchester city supporters because United cast a shadow over them so big that nobody knows who they're. they're outnumbered by United supporters in every part of Manchester and try to lie to people about this, a recent survey done by a university showed that United had the largest number of local season ticket holders in the premiership, add to that United also have a huge support from all over the British Isles. cont-

  • The late great Billy meredith would of played in this game as he switched allegiance from Manchester City for a small fee ( i think it was for a few pints of ale and some tobacco).

  • I'm and American and I've learned it seems that Man United is quite hated by Manchester, even though they are a winning team. Can someone tell me why?

  • because of manchester city which are another team in manchster.....united and city are rivals and there are fans in manchster that hate united because they are a winning team simple because they are jelous

  • suppose you love Spurs and Chelsea then Westhamlad123 ?!? people don't just dislike United because of their success bit more to it than that to be fair

  • Is this the first video of Burnley too?

Nice to show Man United's younger fans the real history of their second tier football club.

  • Comment removed

  • No Way is that turf moor. How different it looks now!

  • 1.04 'worlds most famous club' damn right!

  • U N I T E D

  • Why so sure, the stands mainley, and the fact the date Burnley couldnt have played Man Utd!

Bad gammer Swift60, i belive its at Plumbstead, where Arsenal played around the time.

  • we did play United that day so I've no idea why you would suppose otherwise ? the stand is The Star Stand on Brunshaw Road formerly

owned by Burnley Union Star FC....I am 100%

    sure of this !

  • should have put that better The Star Stand on the one side The Brunshaw Lane stand on the other...terraced house should look familiar as its still there!

  • I agree with you ralphtheclaret, this is Burnley v Manchester United at Burnley. Why is claretmaduk thinking otherwise?

  • if it was Arsenal which it isn't its Plumstead without a B!

  • burnley wore green shirts, white shorts and black socks in 1902, united had a white collar so the strips look correct

  • Why so sure?

  • Plumbstead Arsenal? You're wrong there, they were called Woolwich Arsenal. And this isn't them.
