@Hoblin It all depends on the personality. My shi tzu is nine and is as much of a mellow sweetheart as he was when he was a puppy. He was in a litter of 3, and my mom and dad called out the puppies. One came running, the other wouldn't come, and the other one slowly uncurled himself, stretched, yawned, and then came trotting over to my parents. THAT puppy is our nine year dog, and he is as mellow as they come - except when it comes to thunderstorms and fireworks. XD
