when i was in 8th grade high school i sude to like military history, then i read lots of boosk about war, navies, air forces, military theory, doctrine, national security strategy , military foreign policy, the cold war and i saw this movie, the back ground of international politics of war tensions is very remarkable. sean connery delivers more than excellence.
What an irony to think that, during the cold war, any captain of a US or CCCP submarine did not even had to come at a 200 miles distance from each other shores to launch the missile as the movie shows. They could, and still can, blow it up in the sky from ANY point of the Atlantic ocean and nuke millions...
There is another movie its also about navy but is total diferrent story, the movie is MEN OF HONOR with ROBERT DE NIRO(another actor i LOVE).Anyway i love this movie is one of my favourites , by the way sorry about my english i am a brasilian
i love this movie ,when i first saw it i didin't understood it too, but the i saw it again a couple of times and i understand it and i also loved , includind this song, includind SEAN CONNERY and ALEC BALDWIN0.I alredy knew boht of this grets actors, but i loved tha movie so much that i started to whorship sean connery and like more of alec baldwin (he is beautifull in this movie ).
Lithuanian born guy. The real story. Epic. Jonas Plaskus or Jonas Pleškys (10 March 1935 – 14 April 1993) was a Soviet Navy submarine tender captain born in Lithuania. In 1961 he sailed his vessel from Klaipėda to Gotland in Sweden, not the planned destination of Tallinn. The Soviet authorities sentenced him in his absence to death by firing squad, but the CIA hid him, first in Guatemala and later in the United States.
I watched it last summer, I didn't really understood it the first time. Maybe I should watch it couple times to understand it like I did with Inception
@roboguy75 If you did not grow up during the Cold War, it will be difficult to understand all the subtleties. Basically no American trusted any Soviet and vice versa. Very little was known about each other, but we had been enemies since the end of the second World War. We both had enough weapons to blow up the entire world. Neither side thought the other would use theirs, but we were still afraid to tick them off or they might.
This film is real masterpiece of the 90's. I always wanted to see this movie and finally I did. Fantastic one!!! (just like the book). Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill and others did a great job. Bart Mancuso was my favorite character but I really loved all of them
The soviet national hymn is bar far the most beatiful ever made, end of ciscussion - but it almost gets better when re-worked by Basil Poledouris in The hunt for Red October.
I do not know any russian, (the language is totally blabbering to me) but none the less, it's a great piece of music and I love it (and the original hymn aswell)...

A real cool song. I was surprised it wasn't by Hans Zimmer.

Szerintem nagyon jó zene...illik a filmhez...Sean Conenery is csúcs a filmben és persze a többiek is nagyon jól játszanak...
