And I hope no one takes my comment the wrong way. I think Curtis Roads is brilliant and inspiring, I just didn't agree with the description of a binary electronic musical tradition. However, I should also say that at the end of the day, I need to put away abstraction and commune with other human beings in an ancient human ritual of music, movement, and socialization - all neurally interconnected and enriching behaviors. Have a wonderful day. Oh, and thanks for the interview!
No offense, but there are more than two divergent streams. It's simple, but it's not true. In between both extremes, there are relevant historically rooted participatory (as opposed to spectator) cultural forms (hip hop, house, techno, etc...) that grew out of technological progress and commercial availability of synths, drums machines, and now computers. Progress is being made on the streets outside of the seminar; see Flying Lotus et. al. A note: IDM is the most pretentious genre title ever.
My advisor studied there, and next week our experimental music class is performing the John Cage songbooks! I don't doubt it was (and is) a great place to be! I attended a lecture by another composer there, Zack Browning, who, though more traditional, is also quite good! I don't know where I'll end up, but if it happened to be there I don't think I'd be disappointed!
Without this, there would be no Dubstep music. Music has been influenced by somefink called techmology.
