I'm hungry! What a waste of that delicious sandwiches. Give them to me. But on second thought, kinda creepy since they are a bunch of 84 year old sandwiches!
This is hands down one of the best scenes in a movie ever! Just to have all of that depth in one scene without any talking is amazing, and that one line, "Don't be afraid of me!" really brings it home. I also love the vulnerability of the characters in this scene and how it spreads to whoever may be watching. Great movie
He has to regain her trust under the most impossible of circumstance. If he doesn't, he'll be lost... If she can't, she'll be forgotten. Murnau pulled it off with the visual medium of silent film, and I'll still remember how he did it as as from the first time I saw it. Impossible and Brilliant!
In Canada, the 1920's were known as the 'crazy years' because mobsters and malintentioned peoples kept coming across the border to cause trouble. Stuff like this is why they thought of it that way.
It's not so long ago that I saw this film and I have tears in my eyes when only thinking about the girl's face in these scenes. I have never seen anything quite like this movie.
The cable car scene is the most moving scene of all for me. The hauntingly beautiful musical score accompanying the cable car scene makes it all the more poignant.
This portion is my favorite part of the movie - it's amazing that without spoken dialogue (and only a few text cards) I can feel the emotion from each of them so clearly. And I tear up every time.
It's scenes like this one that make me believe Norma Desmond's line "We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!" Such a heartbreaking, deliriously poetic movie.
I've always found it weird how they can record the music for movies but not the characters dialogue. Oh well.

Heartbreaking. You know JG did the coffee cake
scene for her audition with Murnau, and it
won her the part??
A homicidal husband and unflattering wigs;
