Abortion should be about choice as of right now. People are educated enough to know that a fertilized egg is not a baby, but religion has a hold on opinion and that's the only reason why people oppose it. Until we get a better understanding of religion's irrationality, American society is going to be lagged down by its iron grip.
why does a stance against abortion have to be a matter of religion?
Except in extenuating circumstances (rape, health, etc.) why can't one say it is a matter of taking personal responsibility for ones actions. You agree to a certain action, you take the risk of starting the process that leads to a life, unless something is done during that process to stop it.
I don't see why a pro-life view can only be the result of "religion's irrationality" :)
It's NOT -- I'm not religious and I am very pro-life, and I am thrilled that Ron Paul is, too. Abortion is to our time what slavery was to the early republic. Draw the parallels: people said slaves weren't people ("3/5 of a person" sound familiar?), people said it was an issue of property of the slaveowner -- today people argue that the woman owns the unborn baby in her womb and is free to do with it as she pleases. Look into Dr. Paul's reasons for being pro-life -- they are plentiful!
As a rational person and a non-religious one, I think it's completely stupid to call a live fertilized egg a human. It's just a cell that has the potential to grow into a human being. But the woman's life is ruined just because you want to defend something that "potentially" could become a person, that to me is ignorance. A person should have the option of having sex and get an abortion because the notion of that cell having human rights is not rational.
We seem to have more concern in the country about protecting the concept of life than people that are alive. Look at the veteran's hospitals, look at all the people who has cancer and look to stem-cell research for a cure. Those are the things we should be concerned about, not the concept that it's wrong to get an abortion.
In my mind, it's crossing no moral boundary to inflict damage upon one self without hurting another. And as I explained, there is no rationale, other than religion, that could justify an egg to be a human.
I still disagree that being pro-life is inherently a religious position. That being said, I know you are not alone in your views and I respect them and your right to them. If this is the only thing keeping you from voting for and supporting Ron Paul, however, I urge you to think about this: Ron Paul is not for making abortion illegal at a federal level. Ron Paul, as I understand it, is for making the government accountable to the people and the constitution.
I never said I'm not going to vote for Ron Paul. In fact, I already registered republican for him and I ordered a shirt from his store. I'm just posting these comments because I don't agree with some of his views. On the other hand, I agree that if he wants the Republican nomination, he has to be pro-life and pro-gun and all that, which I disagree with on a certain level. Politicians are not stubborn, it is the people that they are trying to get the vote from that are.
Even more practically, the president has no direct power to overturn the ruling, he can only replace Supreme Court judges when they retire or die. The supreme court took it upon themselves to make policy based on reasoning which can at least be called controversial. Please just read a little about this, if you haven't. The Supreme Court, made up of people appointed by presidents for life not directly accountable to the people, created policy for every individual in this country.
A case can be made that any legislation about abortion should not be made at the federal level, but rather should be left up to individual states, if one follows the constitution. If the supreme court seizes more power than they have constitutionally, even for what you deem to be the general good, the power of government grows at the expense of the freedom of the local governments and the individual. Does that end justify the means?
What's your IQ? An egg is not human. When the egg meets sperm, it is the beginning of human life. I suggest you open a science book for confirmation. No one thinks they're eating a chicken when they eat scrambled eggs, because they aren't fertilized eggs. It's the difference between night and day.
By the time the woman has the first possibility to even be aware that she is pregnant, the fetus already has a heartbeat, fingers, and toes. He or she is already in a tiny human form. Please educate yourself before you keep spreading misinformation. Science is rational. Science says that human life begins at conception. Please do the math.
When i said egg, i was trying to abbreviate because i have only 500 characters. I meant a fertilized egg. Life begins at conception but your life as a human doesn't. In fact, I don't think you are capable of human behavior until much later.
The Founding Fathers pledged "our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor". It will take nothing less today. Unless we are willing to go big we may as well stay home and wait for the worst. Let's just do it and do it now. Give generously of your time, talents and money. Go to ronpaul2008(dot)com

knowledgeofall, Ron Paul wants the States to decide. He doesn't believe that the Federal Government has the right to impose this issue on all the country. He believes the bigger the issue is, the more local the solution should be. Not everyone in America agrees with you, you know and that's the problem.
Because one is to stupid to keep ones legs closed or take birth control or go oral one has a right to kill someone that has not the same DNA as the mother and is not part of her body but is a separate individual. good for you.

To Ron Paul, and to all possible supporters (To whom it concerns)
A Women's right to choose, as it pertains to her body, including any human beings contain within it, is fully, completely, absolutely in her sovereign right to control without the so called State, trying to usurp her Right to do with her body and all contained within her body as she so sees fit.
To leave it up to, 'The States', as Ron Paul seems to espouse is unacceptable.
This is dumbfounding to me. I am a woman that always thought of herself as pro choice. His points however, are not unreasonable. His opinion as an OBGYN after delivering 4000 babies is that legally that baby does have a right. If he were to make an error and harm the baby, or a drunk driver plowed into a pregnant woman's care, there would be million dollar law suits. He sees that there is a double standard with which times it is convenient to value the life of a fetus.
If a stranger ripped your fetus out of you, it would be a crime of violence, no? Feds have no authority over violent crimes - its at a state level. Whether or not you believe it is violence is a state decision. Feds have no right to blanket the country (for OR against) with any law regarding this matter. This is as close as we could ever wish for a compromise, since both sides feel very strongly about the subject.
Also, respectfully...priorities? We're in Iraq killing civilians and troops.(living people with families and feelings) Our liberties are being stripped, the constitution is being ignored, and our country is almost bankrupt. Iran invasion is coming. US dollar? Worthless. I respect your opinion, but is abortion REALLY that important in comparison? If I didnt agree w/his stance, I would know that he'd keep our country free and alive, and that is my priority.
No human being is sovereign over another human being. No human being has the right to take another human life except in self defense. All human beings have the basic right to live. The job of the government is to protect the rights of it's people. Therefor, the government not only has the right but the duty and obligation to protect the life of the unborn.
Roe v Wade is a dying Supreme Court decision. It was just another collectivist power grab to put more control in fewer hands. Like most tyranny it was presented as beneficial and we bought it.
Every life has unalienable rights endowed by the Creator. Like most change it will have a period of adjustment until it becomes self evident.
* I do not say I want anyone to die, including a fetus that may be considered to be or not to be a human life, it is simply, but profoundly the right that, nature/GOD, has placed in the way it is, and is the one who is pregnant to allow continuation or not of the pregnancy, not the STATE.
If the STATE, becomes, final Arbiter on this, then it is very easy to slide down the slope to allowing It to becoming more group think and that tends to become very, Fascist/Nazi like, very quickly.
so what we all know that some states would still have abortion, and if they do let the people who want one to go get one. There expensive anyway it wouldn't be making it all that worse.
