Wow! I'm just discovering Evie Sands. There is no cooler woman, and Johnny wasn't kidding; its not just that she's playing left handed. The guitar is stringed right-handed, so she actually IS playing the guitar upside-down.
Evie Sands is riveting in this raw soulful performance & clearing watching and feeling this intense performance clearing this "Unsung" legendary lady is one of the all-time greatest and even Dusty Springfield cited her as her favorite singer...stunning clip is amazing and this lady is still around doing it today...Bravo Evie!!!
My goodness, the bass strings really are on the bottom! I'm righthanded, but as a baseball fan with many personal lefthanded acquaintances, I always notice lefthanded people right away. I remember seeing Evie Sands on a T.V. show around 1969-70, but I think it was a different one, and I remembered all of these years later that she played the guitar with the same hand Paul McCartney and the Herman's Hermits bassist Karl Green both did. But I didn't know it was upside down until just now.
I don't think it really makes that much difference. I doubt it's harder, it's just different. In some ways it'd be easier because she uses the strnger part of her fingers on the thicker strings.
If everyone played with the bass strings on the bottom it would be as normal as Hendrix playing left handed.
@rslitman Just read your comment about Evie Sands playing a right-handed guitar- left- handed with the strings reversed from the usual. Recomend you check out Wallis Bird a singer from Ireland who does the same thing to great effect. She learned because of a childhood accident that injured her fingers, but it really gives her playing a unique sound. There are numerous videos on here, but i like Blossoms in the Street-Wallis Bird @ New Pop. Hope you take a look, I think you'll enjoy it.
2:33---The audience was totally into this performance, applauding for Evie's guitar solo---and the guitar was not even miked correctly to enjoy the extent of it! In order to truly enjoy Evie's fantastic arrangement, one must contrast the song to the original version by Ray Charles featuring David 'Fathead' Newman and The Raelettes formerly The Cookies. Even Brother Ray must have been in awe of what Evie did with his song. RIP Johnny, you knew talent when you heard it. Evie Sands is fantastic.
@KojiRecords Evie certainly deserved EVERY last second of applause she got at the end of this performance- I'm mesmorized to the point that I was practically applauding too. What a beautiful, wonderful person.
no one has commented in over 1 month heres a list to consider 1) she plays a guitar(holds) like jimi hendrix and dick dale 2she knows how to play a musical instrument very well 3) as to who might have more talent in her class-CASH picked her,no one else told him BOO!,hand picked from the same guy who brought Bob? something? look at the complete list of guests,it staggars the mind -the varied talent CASH brought to ABC.4)his same "DECICER" is sole member of the big 3 hall of fames. EVIE IS !
20 minutes ago, I had no idea there had ever been a lady named Evie Sands. But I remembered a song named "Maybe Tomorrow" and after downloading many "Maybe Tomorrow"s, I found the one I remembered from my teenages. I am going to upload in a few minutes. What a voice!!!!!!!!
I've seen a black and white copy of this show; didn't know it was in color. We're lucky the video still exists. Check out "Don't Look Back (Don't Look Down)" from Sept 08--It's almost 40 years later, and she still shows how it's done!
Awsome Clip!!! What a joy... I don't think we can call Evie a "pretty little girl" now but she still is mighty pretty and small in stature. Her voice and guitar playin still shine.... I've had the pleasure of seeing her live in the last few years a number of times and she still has it!!!! Can't wait for some new music.!!!!!!
Pure talent & class.
