1. Japan's geography does not allow to use mounted archery as they use in Asia. the whole country is segregated, and very hilly.

2. Massive troops number require a lot food. Even if they loot, they have to maintain a long supply chain, that is vulnerable to attacks.

3. Japan was not a unified country. lots of fiefdoms fighting for they own. Most daimos would not accept a mongol hegemony, and revolt constantly. In longterm this suck a lot of money out of the empire.

To be honest the Japanese were helped by the kamikaze "divine winds" which destroyed the mongol fleets but lets be real here. If the mongols did make a landing they wouldn't be able to use their horse archers effectively. They would have to use their Chinese units but those would be fighting the Japanese warriors game and would most likely been turned back. In the end, who gives a ****. It already happened, Japan won, the Mongol Empire doesn't exist anymore.

I always think that the military prowess of the Japanese was overrated. Japan became a military power in Asia only when they adopted Western technologies in the late 19th century. Before that time Japan was an isolated agricultural society.

Japan was able to withstand mongol invasions because of their isolated geographical location surrounded by seas. If Japan was connected to the Asian mainland then I'm sure that Mongols would able to conquer Japan.

Ethnic Han Chinese probably did participated in the later invasions of Mongols into Japan but their results are probably not effective. In fact, there is long held conspiracy theory that Chinese ship builders purposely made the Mongol fleet to be vulnerable to Typhoon attack.

We have to agree, the factor of water barrier did much to deter Mongols invasion of japan, that limits the numbers they can transport, and the tactical manoevring that they can employ, since the Heike conflict between the Minamoto clan and the Taira clan after, the Japanese have no knowledge of handling large scale army, they are lucky to have a natural wall of seas and luck in weather as defense, their skill in personal combat is probably a bonus, but not conclusive enough to be a huge factor.

@Balencian On the side note, the video is well done don't you think, good job @auberginetow , I'm not against Samurai btw, I love Samurai, I love everything about Japan in fact, but I think the only time when they really have the real skill to beat back the Mongols is during the Sengoku period with people like Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Date Masamune and Oda Nobunaga etc. But at that time, they got lucky with all the elements coming together to their favor for the Japanese.

2) I think like the Three Kingdoms, the Sengoku period generals were simply overrated due to the period's popularity. Japan had plenty of good Samurai generals that did not live during the Sengoku period like Hojo Tokimune (The samurai shown in this video), Kusunoki Masashige (regarded by the Japanese as their war god) or the legendary strategist, Minamoto Yoshitsune.

This probably is most true, as to be successful there must be element of skills displayed to achieve their nature of goal. Great problems with the Mongols is when they have nothing to pillage and loot, their supplies ran out. Many people said the Typhoon denied the Mongols victory over Japan, it is more than that, the Mongols firstly had chosen a wrong spot to land (Kyushu is outskirts of Japan) and the Japanese too had stalled the Mongols long enough before they can even built a ground camp, which is just as an important to the victory as the typhoon.

I think that the only advantage they had is sea. Mongolians used to fight on the ground, they're not sailors.
