Does this guy realize what kind of laughing stock he's become? These videos are making the rounds in studios and music schools around the country and people are just laughing their heads off at this guy. Unbelievable!
I don't think people understand the goal of an educational video like this. IT is meant to teach through the example of the actual procedure, not to try to show how how to make an award winning sound. Thanks for this video. I guess people now-a-days expect a "ok guys, this is how you do this..."-type of shit. Everybody has their own style. sheesh.
i apriciate your work and what you are trying to achieve here, but sorry buddy you so over-compressed this vocal that this superb singer sounds now like Justin Bieber!
Ug...pure grit. By 6:18 you think you've got it nailed down.....until you roll back to 00:58 and hear how butchered it is from the original. Sounds good at low level perhaps, but when you send this out an FOH system at ~90 dB, it's really hard on the audience's ears.
I completely disagree... if you take the approach that effects should compliment the vocal, rather than change it... then it's completely acceptable. Most professional studios that I've worked in and recorded in will mix the HELL out of vocals... 7 or 8 plugins is not uncommon... most of which only make subtle differences... but together make a well mixed vocal...
kinda true but ppl do and have for over 30 years - ppl used to use sony's MDR's
There is no 'one way' that things must be done - remember that the ppl at the top of the industry used to 'mess around' with lots of techniques until they found what worked for them individually
why is everyone bitching here? he does exactly what hes set out to do, hes trying to achieve a bold quality to the voice so of course hes gonna use a lot compression. and think about the type of style this would be for ....trance or pop......and there is not a lot of ddynamics in either these days
dude. you do realize you are completely eliminating all your dynamics.. right?
for hip hop its common process to compress rap vocals, but not for singers (especially a dynamic singer like you have here) keep learning, dont give up, but dont assume you have the process right. Im telling you.. you dont
what i usually do is record an artist in a low input so the mic doesn't pick up alot of background noise, then once recorded, I use an regular EQ, and a soft knew compressor after that with a fast attack. it's quiet simple.
It's kinda sad to see someone who seems like they been doing this for a while is actually messing up at what they do. How do you use a limiter to compress vocals? That's a no no. Soft Knee compressors are probably the most liked, especially for singing vocals. That X-Noise plugin you use is horrible for mixing btw, it's only really good if you trying to restore sound. Just use a regular de-esser.
Hi, Im writting from Ecuador, i have a mac book pro i7 4 processors, 500 gb, and pro tools 9 whit a project mix but i cant run it good, it always gives me problems whit cpu overload, remove some plug ins, I have done everything online people say but not working, it gets slow and i cant put a guitar amp plug in because goes slow and sometimes stops.
Dude, you're really killing an already beautiful vocal... granted, you're being creative with your plugins, but man, you're teaching people how to really f*ck up the vocals.. I'm hearing artefacts that shouldn't be there. And putting an L2 on a vocal doesn't make it PUNCHY - it just brick wall limits it. Punchy is all about dynamics, and you've just removed all dynamics. I think you're essentially looking for an FM Radio sound.. that's a completely different story as far as processing goes

What is that effect called on her voice? I've been trying to get that effect, how do i get that effect!! It sounds like you have a little auto tune on her voice. I would love to get that sound..
how do you get that nice pan sound on a track without actually recording 3 tracks for center, left, and right? Their's also a sound that i'm trying to figure out how to put in my song. If you listen to Katy Perry song Alien. Their's a sound used threw out the track on her vocals...
that doesn not need reverb she need to sing another couple tracks at the bridge to bring in the hook and to sing two more tracks on the hook not no effects to double her self on the lead vocals r u crazy
The haters in this comment thread are awful. You demonstrated some nice tricks to get a brighter vocal sound which I found really helpful.
That said, it'd be nice if you used more stock vanilla effects for those of us who don't use your software tools, and it seemed strange that you listened to the FX vox track without the context of the whole mix - seems like a dangerous practice! How do you know that the heavily modified vox are going to work in thie final product?
You can just EQ the sibilance out by just cutting the ~3K range by a couple dB. It will preserve more of the quality of the sound. To the chrislago guy: While I agree these vocals sound like shit, not everybody has the money to buy a nearly $9000 mic, a $3000 preamp, etc., along with sound conditioning their room. Nice setup you claim to have, though.
Lol the vox sound like crap! You know what I do to get great results? I use a Great Singer w. Sony c800g/Neve 1073/ Tubetech Cl1b in a great room... Wanna know what I use on the itb chain? Nothing! lol what a joker that guy is.
this guy has a ritual to what he does to his vocals , your mix will always sound crap with that , every vocal tracks different , its impossible to have a ritual to every single one!
and plus he seems full of himself like hes the best ever!
If you are a young and aspiring engineer then please don't watch this. It's really not good protocol to "dial in" the sound of a vocal without hearing it in your mix first.
Here on my system the end result did NOT beat what I heard in the beginning.
all you people bashing what he has done have obviously not watched part 2. This is the effect track ONLY. In the end he combines it with the original vocal track and in my opinion has a beautiful outcome. great job dude. i learned alot.
Jesus people, this guy is just teaching us how to use some cool stuff. Its not like he is going to publish this vocal to american idol. Its just a demo clip. Any way, Magoostus, thanks for the walk through. I struggle with singing and need all the effect I can to make my original music sound as best as posibble. check me out at upyourad
I've been mixing for nearly 16 years now. And I've never gotten a headache in just five minutes of listening to a vocal. And the worst part is that's it's not the fault of the signer.
If you feel that your take lacks humph.. you should have asked her to redo it with more, if you were in studio with her of course. If you weren't then you should not change the feel of the take as it is what the artist/composer and producer went for.
.......over processed - too much dynamic range reduction. This vocal is obviously in a very soft natural song that isnt hard hitting so why force the vocal to sound like a polished track? it never needed it. This demonstration would of been better with a rock vocal. Good ideas for a hard hitting single but not on this vocal!
A Great Engineer with cheap equipment can do more than a BAD engineer with Great Equipment.. BUT.. an average Engineer with Average Equipment looses to an average Engineer with Great Equipment everytime.... IT's not ALL about the equipment but let's be real... It helps...
processing the vocals raw is good but i reckon putting it against the music is the best. a vocal can sound shit on its own and magical in a track, just like any other instrment.
Well definitely a lot of people are falling trap of over processing,
But nothing is wrong with that as long as it sits perfect in the mix,
we should not be afraid of being creative we must always think out of the box and try new things, look how far we've come with computer recording who knew this would have happen now all of us can make music because guys like these who think out of the box ,
we have to be more open mind i definitely is going to try the noise remover for dehissing
You need to learn how to use a DE-ESSER. Then maybe you can come back and teach all your fans! Man.. watching you use that complicated avox plug really taught me the intricacies of HAAS psychoacoustics. Will you please come teach at my school??? Thank you for showing us your tricks and secrets to becoming a great and tortured genius
Why are you slaving away over a soloed vocal track...putting every toy you can find on it? You made the original worse, Patrick Bateman. Lol look at all the limiting after you processed. I have to return some video tapes.
He sat there n put all dem plug-ins cuz her S' sounds, he made her S' stand out wen he added all dat eq to the highs, wen he could of just rolled off to 100-120 hz, n it would of brought the highs out more with out addin so much highs, u shouldnt have use so many plugins, 4 at most for lead vocal, if u need more its a bad recorded vocal........n she need auto tune to
I've been a engineer for the past 12 yrs, and what I've learned is that less effects is the best. At the beginning her vocals sound decent, but when you added that choir effect it sounded horrible.
I like the fact that this man makes money doing what he does, and everyone else has their assumptions. Obviously if he has money to afford Waves plugins, or whatever gear he has, he's doing something right.
i realize this vid is a couple of years old so I'm guessing you have alot more experience mixing since this was made. but remember, less is more..i think it sounded better before u did anything to it honestly.
Just a tip...try not to EQ in isolation. Try to EQ the vocals against drum and bass at least because every track in the mix affects the other and what may sound well by itself may sound terrible with other tracks. You can do basic cleaning like gating out background noise but nothing else.
too many toys and tooo much processing, but then most music today is all processing and no talent! So in that case it might work, but you really need to quit falling in love with the computers and over 'effect' bashing on the vocal traks. Usually less is best! It's always nice to hear some one with talent sing, the others that need lots of effects should confine themselves to the choir! All the effects in the world won't help a bad singer...and they don't need processing!
@magoostus i see you've got haters man lol. could you give me an idea of what shelfing is in the simplest way possible? i'm a novice. really good at producing but i'm not really hip to the terminologies or the mastering part of music production.
@mainbuss152 1 - There is absolutely no formula to music making. 2 - As a music seller, you must attend the demand of the consumer - statistically speaking, they don't want to see/hear the kind of talent you said before, I guess most of them never knew what is a good singing, they just followed the trend of influent people saying who's good and who's not, and now, they're just following new quality trends -
@mainbuss152 3 - I guess you're suposing something that is not really true: All effects won't help a bad singer, but who said you they want help to be a good singer? They want help to sell more music, I guess this is their main objetive. =)
Talent does not necessarially reward good professionals and, suposing they want to work seeling music, I guess the point is not musical talent, i guess the real point is comercial talent. =)

I agree but probably depends on the artist and their genre? Dance music for instance. Re mixers do some extraordinary things with vocals etc. and then it's possibly another artform also these tips could apply to any sound so it's actually a great tutorial to learn a thing or two.
@mainbuss152 they might not be able to make a bad singer sound like a great singer, but they allow people without an amazing voice to achieve their dreams and that is amazing
@mainbuss152 It's not just for altering the actual sound of her vocals. Some people don't have expensive, durable mics. So even the best singers aren't gonna sound too good if the vocals are distorted.
Man, your spending way too much time on the vocals. Have you heard of "fix it in the mix" LOL..... And how you afford waves software anyways. They are thousands of dollars.
Not bad. The whole 'stereo widening' is cool, but if you printed that over the entire track, many ears will get tired. You had the vocals sounding great up until that point. Little bit of reverb right there and it would've sounded great!

My only problem is rendering this track. It might not sound right in the mix. If you used sonar 8 you can actually freeze the track to get rid of the plugins to free up the cpu and if something wasnt sounding right simply undo the freeze option to further work on your sound. I also use waves but i would never render a single track first because you cant undo it.
the noise gate on the video is very audible. does your go-to noise gate have a wet/dry setting? some room tone in a video sounds more natural, and a semi-dry signal out of the noise gate would sound less distracting.
Hi, greg!!! ? did u use antares mic modeler or just plain eq for that flat response what's the setting on that. It sounds really clear the sound I'm look for thank!!!
Nope. This is not how you engineer vocals. Anyone that actually wants to learn how should not listen to this guy. Seriously.

It helps...

processing the vocals raw is good but i reckon putting it against the music is the best. a vocal can sound shit on its own and magical in a track, just like any other instrment.

you destroyed the dynamics of the vox with ur compressor! lolz. u should have done parallel compression to maintain the dynamics.

I have a bad head after watching this , in my opinion if you need to use more than three effects on a basic voice , you need another voice

I think that you used too much effects on that, the singer voice have to sound exactly like it is.
I don't like to hear artists that use too much auto-tune.
Well, they can use the auto-tune, but they can ruin the song if they don't know how to use it correctly.
I have to learn something from here.

MrKingYork 1 year ago
I like the fact that this man makes money doing what he does, and everyone else has their assumptions. Obviously if he has money to afford Waves plugins, or whatever gear he has, he's doing something right.

i realize this vid is a couple of years old so I'm guessing you have alot more experience mixing since this was made. but remember, less is more..i think it sounded better before u did anything to it honestly.

Harvanic 1 year ago
Just a tip...try not to EQ in isolation. Try to EQ the vocals against drum and bass at least because every track in the mix affects the other and what may sound well by itself may sound terrible with other tracks. You can do basic cleaning like gating out background noise but nothing else.
anytingtv 1 year ago
too many toys and tooo much processing, but then most music today is all processing and no talent!

Re mixers do some extraordinary things with vocals etc. and then it's possibly another artform also these tips could apply to any sound so it's actually a great tutorial to learn a thing or two.
fuzonacid 1 year ago
@mainbuss152 they might not be able to make a bad singer sound like a great singer, but they allow people without an amazing voice to achieve their dreams and that is amazing
theandyandsamyshow 1 year ago
@mainbuss152 It's not just for altering the actual sound of her vocals. Some people don't have expensive, durable mics. So even the best singers aren't gonna sound too good if the vocals are distorted.
