@stevan72256 AMC used a TH400 behind all theirs v8's from 1973-1979 I believe. The TH400 had only the quadratrack transfercase with a passenger side drop.. When AMC switched to the TF727 (1980-1991) they used a part time transfercase with a driver side drop.... so is your front dif is on the pass side, you have a TH400, driver side drop and you have a TF727.

@stevan72256 Although the engines were ALL AMC engineered and spec'd, International Harvester did the assemblies Cummins cast the blocks. Back in those days AMC didn't have the budget to build it's own engine plant. Most of the "bolt-on" parts were cross platformed from the big 3 in the aftermarket, to insure availability. If you look into IH's past truck models (no, not the Class 8's either) You will find that 290-401 AMC V8 is the one used. They had different specs, of course.
AMC 360, edelbrock performer cam, lifters, timming chain / gears and manifold. I am running a holley 670 truck avenger carb as this is for rock crawling and i need the carb to handle inclines.
They are pretty easy to build. I have seen a few places that sell them as a completed block. The best place to look for a 360 is from a Jeep grand wagoneer (360) will be stamped in the side of cast by the engine mount. I found this one for 500$ it already had been rebuilt internally under 10K with an edelbrock manifold on it. I stripped it and replaced everthing but pistons and rings.

Pretty sure the engine is AMC and if it is it would be a TF727 Transmission
dirtyperl 2 years ago
@dirtyperl AMC used both TH400s and 727s.

Actually, for a '78 it would be a TH400, AMC switched to the TF727 in '79 ('80 model year)

i have a jeep j10 pickup with a 360 v8,who made the motor for the jeep,was it ford,dodge,or were thay made in house,mines a 1978

AMC built the 360 (american motor coporation) until about 1991 when the 360 was last used. Ford also makes a 360 but yours would be an AMC.

why not go fuel injection?

even a truck avenger is a shitty off road carb compared to a motocraft 2100. 4 barrels in general aren't the best offroad.
