The guy is mixing up real emo with scene fags.Everyone who knew the classic midwest emo bands purveyed by Deep Elm and others will laugh at those scene kids wearing eyeliner, being all pretentious about being sad.

Ugh! I hate that they managed to claim the term 'emo'. Back in the day it was nothing short but punk derivative bands that put in more emotion in their songs, not necessarily negative emotions.
