Are we sure this isn't from 1994? Why do they have Chris Webber's behind-the-back dunk on Barkley if this NBA Showtime is from the 1992-93 season? Webber came into the league the year after.
This clip entitled "Chris Webber Famous Behind-the-Back Dunks over Charles Barkley *Vintage NBA", which can be found on youtube, indicates when the Webber dunk occurred. They state the 6th game of that season for Golden State, which occurred on November 16, 1993.
Wait there is something wrong this video; there is some kind of montage, because it seems to be about the end of the regular 92-93 season, but the C-Webb dunk on Barkley is from the 93-94 season
Just got chills watching that, man. This was the NBA at some of its greatest. I know I'm biased because I grew up during the NBA on NBC era, but the league is soft these days.
@strikername: I know! I am surprised he is still playing. he's been playing since 1992! that's 18 years and counting! I think he's trying to go for 20 years total to match Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (< 2nd greatest player of all time next to Michael Jordan if you ask me)
I was dissapointed that Shaq did not make the 2010 All-Star game, I was hoping he could surpass Kareem or tie him for the number of All-Star games played in
@purelh Yeah you're definitely right. Those were the days where all of the superstar players didn't try to get on the same team just to win championships. That was when the players wanted the league to be balanced. NBA just isn't what it used to be.
@dogubomb yeh for sure man the nba at that time was balanced even the most horrible teams had thier big shots but it wasnt all about the ego's n fame n shit like today *cough * labron james
Yeah, I remember the old NBA on NBC specifically when the Hornets were still in Charlotte. Too bad the bobcats suck. Oh well, maybe they will get better eventually.
its pretty cool how it sounds like a cannon goes off whenever anyone dunks. and what the heck kind of celebration was that by malone? the elbow thing? funny stuff
wow the NBA on NBC Showtime theme, doesnt get ne better. The NBA and NHL had way better intros and themes on way better channels then they do 2day, and the NBA was way more competitive and full of superstars back then in my opinion, thts y the NNA sucks 2day. NBA on NBC has to comeback and NHL on FOX but it unfortunetly wont happene.
very nice, did anyone notice that the clips with the music don't match the intro?? C Webb Was drafted in 93, and that smash on Barkley's face was in the 94 playoffs. The intro is prior to the 93 playoffs. Who cares tho? Great vid....
That's part of the reason why Shaq battled injuries throughout his time with the Lakers. Things like his oblique and toes were injuries coming from being out of shape.
The only year Shaq was in shape was the '99-00 season which was the only season that he won the NBA MVP. Not to mention, starting the Lakers run of 3 straight NBA titles that year. I will say this though, Shaq in his time with the Lakers became the best and most dominant player in the NBA during those 3 Lakers title years.
I had L.J's Converse React shoes in Middle school man those were the days now I can't watch a full NBA Game.. Other than what Golden State did in that run a couple years back the last 10 years have been a Blur..
Absolutely agree...what the hell has happened? I know why I cared during the early 90s...what I want to know is why don't I care any more?! I could have reeled off the starting five of every team coast to coast...when did basketball no longer matter?
This intro is actually from April 25, 1993, the last day of the regular season...the featured game is Knicks-Bulls from the Garden (which is why they mention the rivalry on the Showtime intro)
If it was April of 1993, then MJ would have been shown in the intro, as he played in the 1992-93 season, and the Bulls won their 3rd championship in June of 1993.
The Webber around the back dunk on Barkley occurred on Nov. 16, 1993. This was Webber's first year. Jordan was out of the league at this time. NBC began it's first telecast of the 1993-94 season on Christmas Day 93, so they were able to incorporate this dunk in their intro for that season. Bob then goes to talk about how the Bulls are the champs, so it's definitely not from the calendar year 1995 approaching the 1995 playoffs, as the Rockets were the defending champs for the 1994-95 season.
Sign the petition. Bring back the NBA on NBC. Let's come together as one and make a statement and climb our way to the top and get the most signatures. Spread this around. This is not spam. This is not chain messaging. This is a chance for us to make a stand and bring back the NBA to NBC.
Boy, remember when Shawn Kemp could actually get off the deck? He was the first straight-from-HS player since Moses, and really kicked that whole phenomenon off in the 90s.
You are such a fucking moron! The Suns didn't even play the warriors in the 94-95 playoffs. This is definitely from 93-94 you fucking retard! Next time you question me, make sure you're right!
They win the title in '91; they are the champs. Come '92, they are the defending champs for the regular season. They win it again. So now for the '93 regular season they are the two-time defending champs. It's not rocket science.
It's ok guys, Bob makes mistakes sometimes. He's not perfect.
Not saying he is, but I myself thought that "two-time defending champs" meant that they had defended their championship twice and were trying to win another. I guess I was just wrong.
Yes but it shows Doc Rivers on the Knicks right at the start who only played in 92-93 i believe, so that's definitely the year it is unless I am wrong about Rivers
Well you're at least halfway wrong. Doc Rivers played in the '92-93 season as well as the '93-94 season for the Knicks. So it could very well be from the latter. You have to remember how much NBC has touted Jordan over the years. Had he been active, a clip of him would have been shown.
Actually I feel pretty stupid because Chris Webber didn't even play in the 92-93 season so it has to be from 1994, when that play on Barkley was made. And to think I'm supposed to be knowledgable about these things. I really thought Rivers and Blackman left for Harper and Hubert Davis but I guess my memory is going.
So then if that's the case this video should probably be renamed, I'd say this has to be from late March-Early April 1994 without looking at a schedule
Something interesting: Bob Costas, at the beginning of the clip, says "2 time defending champions". Apparently a mishap on his part because Webber's highlight dunk on Barkley is the smoking gun. And since he also says the playoffs are "4 days away", that would mean it's from early/mid April '94.
No, he's right--the Bulls defended their first championship (1991) twice (in 1992 and 1993). This was in 1994, where they were trying to defend it for a third time.
That's not what Bob was trying to say. "2 time defending champs" means that they've won the title twice. 1992=defending champs, 1993=two-time defending champs, 1994=three time defending champs. Sabe, no sabe?
yeah he was right in saying Two Time defending champs because they had defended the title twice, it is just a weird way of wording things when they had won 3 titles
Bob spoke incorrectly and it's from 1994. And both of you should have realized that a highlight reel not featuring Jordan was as big a clue as any other. Now we just need someone to contact "ecw1024" and tell him/her to correct the title of this video.
Oh, I already knew knew that a Jordan reel was not featured here, so it had to be from the 1994 season. Probably just the way he said it may throw some people off. But it is from 1994.
I understand your logic above, but I've also heard countless times when a team only has one the championship once, the next year referred to as "the defending champions", although they haven't defended their title yet.
In the 1997 season, I heard announcers proclaim the Bulls as the defending champs, even though it was their first title win (as part of their second three-peat).
Yes I've heard so many teams that won the title once be called "defending champions", and even though you are in the act of defending your championship during that season, I still feel it's an incorrect use of the term even if it does sound good. To me you need to win twice to be a "defending champion", and that's my logic for why Costas said "Two Time". Really it makes sense either way, but my way is the way in which Costas was thinking, because as you've said this is April 1994, NOT 1993.
And again as you've said, just like ABC does now, just like CBS did before NBC, the first game of the season is ALWAYS the Christmas game, and that is the only televised day for basketball of the season within its year.
Man the Knicks defense was tough back in those days.
